  1. I hate crates too when I know they are being miss used - like anything, great when used correctly and harmful when abused. There is only one jumbo crate set up full time in my home, my dogs "hate" the crate so much that I often find 2 Rottweilers trying to fit in one jumbo crate and the other laying outside of it - so I suppose it must be really awful. The only time I close the door is if they are eating or when there is a bitch in season.
  2. They always have full windows at Fountain Gate and there are always hoards of people oooing and ahhing at them. If i'm with my mum or nephews i always say in a loud voice how vile the shop is and where those puppies come from. I do the same thing but usually add something like ( wonder if those poor little buggers came from the same disgusting place they got the parvo puppies from ) comments like that usually turn a few heads. My kids hate me going near the pet shops and say "shut up and keep walking mum" as we get closer. I have heard many times about puppies with parvo that were sold through Fountain Gate, Narre Warren South and Cranbourne - no doubts there are plenty of others too - so it's not only PP but anyone who buys from the PF who have parvo. Edited again to add: One of my grooming clients bought a BC through PP in Fountain Gate 2 years ago and the pup had parvo, she was very sick and almost died, the vet bills were massive.I told them to return the pup and get a full refund but they didn't want to knowing she would be pts. PP did refund some money and paid maybe half the vet bills but that was it, I had her husband on side with me but she didn't want to cause any problems. Her other dog was due in for grooming and she called me first telling me about the sick pup and asked if it was ok to still bring her dog in for grooming - I could have died on the spot. She really had no idea just what she was dealing with and I thank God she called me first - I could have been in awful shit if that dog came in to my yard! I told her how to treat everything the pup had been in contact with and make sure her other dog is checked properly for any signs of parvo and KEEP HIM HOME. It was 4 months before I had her dog come to my home after he was cleared by their vet twice and it would have been a good year later that she brought the BC in for grooming. From a grooming point of view parvo worries the crap out of me especially when I know the majority of my groooming clients are still buying their dogs from friggen pet shops ..
  3. Can you take pics please, a small dog at 7 kgs is not the same as a pug at 7kgs. Charli would be around 8kg, Maverick (a boy I bred 2 yrs ago) was here recently for desexing and he is just under 9kgs which is not heavy for a male pug, he is not a small dog but not a big eater. I rehomed Lizzy last year and her new owner took her to their vet, the vet tried to tell them that her ideal weight would be around 6kgs - that would be very underweight for a pug. Her ideal weight is around 7.5kgs, she is only a small girl, 8kgs and she is a bit porky. She will be here in a couple of weeks for boot camp while her family are on holidays and my goal is to get at least 1kg off her before she goes back home - she is currently 9kgs . I used to feed the wet and dry separate but will mix it together, never had any issues at all. I think you will find by increasing their meals a bit their tummies will settle down.
  4. Maybe increase their meals a bit and see how they go. What do they weigh? Charli (Pug) has 2 necks (or 1 wing) with half a Big Dog Barf patty (or homemade barf) AM and PM but if I am adding Black Hawk to her diet she gets cut back on the raw. Not sure what she weighs now but she is not fat.
  5. My guess is , having a diagnosis and deciding on surgery .. Tralee then had to find the $5000 to pay for said surgery . Not a task I envy. just a thought .. perhaps entirely off the scale ..but would amputation be a consideration in a case like this ? I think it is the owner that is trying to find the money. Tralee has said he doesn't own the dog that it is going home after it has healed. The problem was also originally thought to be a break and it is only recently that it has been found to be a dislocation that needs an expensive surgery. This was discovered on the 6th July. Tralee appears to have been investigating options since then and the owner finding money. There was another thread on the subject. So the dog hasn't just been left for 11 weeks with a dangling leg. Should it have had pain killers? Maybe. I don't always give painkillers as I don't want the animal to do more damage to the limb. Tralee I would probably do bloodwork before giving painkillers anyway as some painkillers are not good with certain conditions. ie I have to be careful what I give my dog with a liver shunt and am very restricted with drugs. Hopefully doggie is just sore and missing his mum and nothing else is going on. Thanks for filling in the gaps...
  6. ^^ This. Surely you have a decent sized crate that you can use for this dog. I hate the thought of the poor bugger having to negotiate a rope as a boundary - something as simple as tripping over it will do more damage to his leg or possibly injury another, the photo you posted earlier he already had the rope between his front legs and touching his injured leg - it's obvious to me that rope will only do more harm than good. . If your going to keep him on the veranda area why not block it off with properly so he can't hurt himself any further. Anything would be better than a piece of rope. Tralee - you said this earlier " After taking the dog, finances had to be arranged and guaranteed. $5000 is not something many people can find over night" - Why did you have to come up with $5000 - Did you buy this dog when you first got him? If the dog suffered a fracture 11 weeks ago and it has been left to dangle like that for so long - what are the chances of the leg ever being any good again? I just don't get why the leg was not attended to on the very first visit!
  7. I only sling the leg up if he wants to hobble around outside. I put it inside the front strap of the harness shown below. So it prevents him putting weight on it. The leg can slip out when he wees, so he can balance. I refit the leg when he starts to walk again. You can also see his morale is quite good. Has the dog been in this state for 11 weeks? I have changed vets for much less reasons, I have no idea how this dog has been left like this for so long...What is the rope for? At the risk of sounding rude - I just don't get it ..
  8. Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately the Calendula Tea treatment failed. It was the first thing I tried and followed Erny's advice. Maybe I need to try that again I would give it another go, I became converted last year when I saw first hand how good it was on a pug who was in a terrible state, she also had a secondary skin infection - the relief on her face said it all to me. I sponge bathed her several times a day - 3 weeks later she was looking fantastic.
  9. I would be using Calendula Tea instead of calamine lotion. (Where are you Erny  )
  10. I can send you some before and after pics of a pug but would prefer to keep them off the forum for personal reasons. Send me a message it your interested.
  11. Would something like this do? OR see if you can get the size your after from here.
  12. I am happy to say that I have not had any issues with BH at all, it has done what I wanted and that was to put weight on my male Rottweiler who had a pancretitis attack just before Christmas last year - he looks great. Mine are fed a combination of barf and chicken bones (lamb for the girls) and the BH. The only time my dogs seem to fart bad is when they have eaten too much - of anything. I have also noticed that you don't need to feed BH in large amounts to keep the weight on the dogs. I am currently feeding 3 Rottweilers and 1 Pug. Very happy with the product.
  13. Rudducks crates are fantastic, I have 4 small crates for in the grooming shed and 2 jumbo crates for my dogs and love them. The jumbo are a bit on the heavy side but well worth it.
  14. I agree with you there sheridan, Missy was on raw for 2 and half weeks before putting her on earthborn holistic grain free, When she was feed raw she seemed happier, her scratching basicly stop, her horrible farts where no longer there, her poos were smaller and they didn't smell. SO i believe Missy my whippet will do better on raw then on kibble. With Rascal my white/brown chihuahua his coat colour seems brighter, his poos are smaller and not smelly altho he still eats his poos. Shelley my golden retriever seems better on kibble even if feed 1.5% of raw to what she should weigh she still managed to gain weight, Where with kibble she seems to maintain her weight better. is anyone else as confused as me ?????? I think I need a drink. Welcome to my world Yep -
  15. It only took my boy too many raw lamb bones - would never risk feeding many pork bones and not ham bones ..
  16. My dogs are not keen on Roo - think it must be an acquired taste...I hate it too. With the roll - you can cut it in portions when it starts to thaw, might be a bit hard but can be done. Freeze what you don't need straight away.
  17. Think you will find very mix replies but personally if the dog has not been showing any signs of illness then don't worry about the blood work - don't vaccinate and desex at the same time either. BUT that said, peace of mind doing the blood work before any surgery will give you an idea on the general health of your dog. I have desexed/spayed about 6 dogs from 18 months to about 8 years and never had blood work done on them - they all recovered very well without any complications. eta: I would not consider 2yo to be a problem, 2 yo is still young - older to me would be 5+. Might be worth talking to another vet.
  18. You may need to buy an enclosure for peace of mind, I would suggest something big enough to keep the other dog out not just to keep yours in. Same as already posted but bigger. The poor bloody dog is stuffed anyway, if you are feeling threatened by them in anyway then make the call to the council sooner rather than later. They won't expect you if you don't have any further contact with them. Cheaper option would be an electric wire or tape on top of the fence but it will be useless if the dog goes under the fence or gets in somewhere else if it escapes it's own yard, it already knows where your dog is and might come after him if it gets out.
  19. I give my pug pups bones from around 6 weeks old, at first they just suck them but by 7 weeks they know what to do with them. By the time they leave home from 8 weeks old they are already eating chicken wings and necks with no problems at all. I have found vets have very different views on giving dogs bones, I was even lectured about how irresponsible I was for giving my middle aged Maltese chicken bones...others tell me what ever I am feeding to keep doing it because of the condition they are in. This pup was around 8 weeks old and knew exactly what to do with chicken wings and necks.
  20. This is a great topic and has got me motivated to do more research on finding other meat options again, can see some more sleepless nights ahead. Anyone in the SE Vic area know where to find goat and horse meat/bones and pancreas (pig or other animal) please let me know.
  21. Very generalized comment, most dogs have an iron gut - not all...breed has nothing to do with it.
  22. I have( and breed horses) if my dog did well on horse meat it wouldn't stop me using it I really feel for people who's dogs have bad allergies..and i would feed what i needed to if it helped and my pet cow and pet lambs mean just as much to me as what my horses do When I was a kid I lost one of my mares due to foaling, vet couldn't save her but the foal lived and we handraised her. My father called one of the local greyhound breeders telling him to come collect the horse for his dogs, he called the vet and it was fine to use as long as it didn't go to the current working dogs (no idea on the drugs used so who knows) I was pretty pissed off with my father at the time but eventually realized it was better to use the body than waste it. We only had her for about 6 months, never knew she was pregnant when we got her, she came from a large horse property in NSW. We have raised many calves and lambs, they were sold at the markets so would have ended up on someone plate - just not ours. Had no worries eating their relations though . I had horses for almost 20 years and love them, however if I could get horse meat for my dogs today I would, especially for my boy who needs a lean diet.
  23. I just rang Big Dog and had a chat with them about Hamish, was a great chat and I will most likely be filling my big freezer up again. They really are easy people to talk with so I will keep supporting them :D .
  24. If you want to save some time at feeding you can always stuff a chicken frame with selected meats/organs or homemade barf - mine love it. The stuffed chicken frames sound like a great idea for Missy and my goldens probably one would be plenty for the whole day. What supplements do you use if any? What omega 3 and 5 oils would you use? for my chihuahua i would have to give a chicken neck or half a chicken wing or turkey wing plus some minced meat and offal on the side. I put them back on kibble for now tillI learn more on raw feeding. I won't hand out much advice on raw feeding any more since one of my dogs had Pancreatitis late last year - but I will say do your own research and when you think you have done enough - KEEP LOOKING.. I am back to searching for other ways to feed my boy in hope to get him back on a whole raw diet but for now he is doing very well on selected raw and Black Hawk.
