Bedding For Incontinent Dog
puggy_puggy replied to WOOFLUVA's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Might be more usefull to use something like doggy undies or a belly band on the dog then bedding. If it's a female dog then doggy undies would do and if it's a male then a belly band would be the way to go. I would put some human incontance pads or sanitary pads into both. That way you can just chage the pads and not the undies or the bedding all the time. -
As the others have said have a read of the BARF diet and ditch the rice, pasta and horrible dog loaf. Will the BARF diet vegtables & fruit are generally pulped up. I feed my dogs BARF slops every day that consist of vegtables, fruit and whole eggs that have been pulped up in the food processor. (some BARF slops contain liver or minced meat but I choose not to add this to my slops) I then have a rotating menu that goes with the slops consisting of chicken necks, kangaroo chunks, lamb chunks, liver, sardines, yoghurt and beef. I also feed bones at least twcie a week.

What Brush Should I Use For A Labrador?
puggy_puggy replied to morphjk's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
So how good are these? They are expensive but if they work then my wife will be happy Shedding blades are fantastic. I went through many different sorts of brushes with the pugs before I happend apon the shedding blade and I have to say that nothing compares. It looks like a hacksaw blade that has been twisted around into an oval shape with a handle on the end. It shouldn't cost more the $30 and most likely to be under $20. -

I would go for the shedding blade as well. -
Ohhhh he goes swimming. It makes sense now. Glad the vet has set you on the right course of action. And yep I would definately be cleaning his ears out after ever swim or at least once a week.

I didn't say that you were but as most reputable breeders would not use your dog as a stud because he hasn't been shown the only way that you could use him for breeding would be to get your own bitch or go down the BYB path. Get his hip scores done.
-
A very valid point that I forgot to mention. Other breeders really aren't likely to want to use your dog as a stud if it hasn't been shown and doesn't have titles. This means that probably the only two ways you could breed with him is to get yourself a registered bitch and use her or go the way of BYB or PF which as a now registered breeder would be against canine council rules. You have already stated that you haven't had enough time to show your dog so if you did get yourself a bitch then I doubt that you would show her therefore how would you know that she was a good representation to the breed? If you did then mate these two unshown dogs wouldn't you be breaking the registered breeders code of ethics to only breed to improve the breed of dog?

Ohhh that looks painfull. Is it only on their noses? Make sure the vet takes a swab and test for things like Strep & Staph as well as other fungul sorts of things. How long have their noses been like that? You may also try something like Physohex (the human acnea facewash) to gentley bath them with and then some sort of antibiotic cream could be put on. Let us know what the vet comes up with.

Ohh make sure that they take a swab and check it under the microscope. Which I am sure they will do anyway.

Trimming Fur Between Pads?

Interesting to know. I wasn't sure because of course I have pugs that have short hair. So Jasper cut away. -
Trimming Fur Between Pads?
puggy_puggy replied to Jasper_Cav's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am no expert but I would say that if he is happy with you doing it then any pair of scissors would be fine and you should just have a go. I could be wrong but shouldn't the fur be rubbed off from his normal everyday life of walking around on it? Is the fur actually growing over his pads? My only experience with this is many years ago with an old corgi. I used to trim the fur on his feet because he wasn't active enough to naturally wear it off himself. -
Poor guy. Hope the vet can get him back on track. How often do you check and clean his ears? My suggestion would be to do so at least once a week. Do you have another dog that might be licking his ears? This could cause an infection.
-
A damp cloth is fine to clean out the ears with. I clean the pugs ears, whilst they are in the bath, once a week with a damp chux like cloth. If they have some wax that I can't get to with the cloth I will use a cotton bud carefully to remove it. My girl's ears really don't get dirty but my boys ears are usually a bit gunky. As long as the gunk in your golden's ears don't seem to some sort of infection then you cleaning them will be fine. If they seem irritated, red, or he is scratching at them it would be best to go to your vets and get them to do a swab to look at under their microscope to see if there is an infection present. If that is the case they will provide you with some medicated eardrops most likely.

Is she on heat? She could have a urinary tract infection and the brownish colour you are seeing is because she is peeing blood. Sounds like something is not quite right to me and I would be getting sample that your vet can test.

I was going to suggest antihistamines to Sas but just read that was the first hing you tried. Claratyne ( the human stuff) seems to work great for my pug and a few others I know that have been itching themselves to death. Maybe it would be a good idea to go back to a full BARF diet. I have noted the amazing change in coat and the fact that my itchie pug is really no longer that itchie since I started on a full BARF diet a few months ago. Trying the Groomers Choice EPO Shampoo might be an idea as well.

Wow you seem like a very responsible person and I aplaud you for it. I am one of those who thinks that a dog should do well in the show ring and be a good example of the breed to be able to be bred with. Are you still in contact with his breeder? Maybe you could get them to have a look at him and they could tell you if he is a good example of his breed. Maybe you could take him to a breed specific dog show and have a few people look over to again tell you if he is a good example of the breed. This is of course if he passed his hip scores. As for desexing. My first pug I thought I might show and that he might be good for breeding with. I didn't end up showing and now after being in the pug world for 7 years know that he has so many faults it's not funny and should never have been considered for breeding with. I had him desexed when he was nearly 2. If your dog turns out to be a 'pet only' desexing is the way to go. It will cut down his dominance. Some dominance issues can be already ingrained but by desexing they should be easier to train out thne if a dog is not desexed. Desexing also cuts the risk of your dog being stolen and used as a Puppy Farmer. Goodluck. I would say get his hips checked and get him looked over by some people involved in the breed and if he doesn't cut it then bit of him can get the cut.

I have been using the EPO on my male pug for the last few months and have also changed over to a complete BARF diet and the change in his coat is amazing. His hair used to be brittle and sort of rough to touch when compared to other pugs but now it is seriously luxurious, so soft and looks longer. When people pat him in the park or when we went to a pug show the other weekend, we observe not compete, people pat him and gasp at how soft his hair is. It's not just me that can see and feel the difference in his hair but also my mother and close friends. He has also stopped being so itchie scratchie. Admittently I don't know if it's the diet or the EPO that has made the difference but I would like to think it was a bit of both.

Poor dog. Classic UTI infection signs or bladder stones. She is 12 years old as well which is more of a worry. If I couldn't pee I sure as hell would be taking myself to get some medical help.
-
I would do the elizabethan collar for a week or so to give the legs time to heal and for him to try and break the cycle. Would probably wash the legs in Physohex or something similar daily and maybe apply a cream or ointment. And maybe give him an antihistamine.
-
Could he have a tooth or jaw problem?
-
Any news? Sounds like they might have become infected from the expressing last time. You can sometimes smell infected & impacted anal glands on the breath of a dog, not because they have licked it but because it somehow is transfered through the body. She might need a course of antibiotics.

Josh Is Sick With Kennel Cough/pancreatitus
puggy_puggy replied to whatevah's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh no poor Josh. Was he up to date with his vacinations? If so that would have probably saved his life as he would have the KC worse if he wasn't vaccinated. When did he start coughing? When did you take him to the vets? Hopefully they have him on antibiotics and a saline drip. -
I am not quite sure but when I did an elimination diet with my boy pug it was at least 4 weeks on nothing but the special food. It didn't help. This year I have changed over his diet to pure BARF and that seems to have really helped as well as just giving him an antihistamine tablet every now and again. What was the new food you introduced?
-
What do you mean by a problem again? If it's just that she has left an expulsion of slimey goo it's nothing to worry about. They have no idea that they do it other then to be disgusted, along with the rest of us, by the vile smell. Is she scooting?

My pugs would kill eachother if I didn't didn't supervise food time or boney time and I would never dream of letting them each unsupervised. I have found that a spray bottle does wonders when they stray from their own bowl or bone. They know they shouldn't be wanting to check out what the others have. I have had up to 6 pugs all eating harmoniously with the spray bottle techinique.
