  1. Im so sorry to hear that your pup is not well. My Border Collie started seizing at 12 months of age. Epilepsy. We had him on Phenomav for 4 years until he had a massive seizure at the age of 5 which caused him so much damage he had to be PTS. The Phenomav might be causing the wonkiness. I know my boy used to get dopey about an hour after he had his meds. Just do your best with her, its all you can do. I wish you the very best with your doggy.
  2. Oh my gawd! Our boy humps his bed at night too. I thought humping etc, was all about dominance and stuff. I had NO idea that dogs actually....ummm...masturbated. :D Cant wait to tell hubby what his doggy is 'really' doing when he humps his bed! But on a serious note, is this something to be worried about? Should I put a stop to it or just let him go right ahead and have a good time? :D
  3. When I bought my puppers from their (ethical) breeders I was asked a lot of questions and they made very sure that they were happy to sell to me. I found it comforting that they screened potential buyers, and I felt that I had made a safe choice with these breeders. I have been very happy with my dogs, they are exactly what I wanted and all three breeders have made themselves available whenever I have needed to ask a question. I would not buy from a breeder that did othewise. :D

    Mastiff

I dont know if this is the right place to post this or not, but oh well. I want to know more about the Tibetan Mastiff but couldnt find a thread on them. I know they are pretty hard to find etc, so this may be why Troy never put up a thread on them. But Id love to know more about this divine breed. Mastiffs of all origin are just amazing animals, so loyal and gentle. :D I just love them, if I didnt already have three poodles Id have a mastiff! :D
  5. This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone know if the Spectacular Petacular is running this year in Brissy? I cant seem to find any info on the net but I never heard that it had been cancelled closed down or anything. Anyone got a heads up on this? Was really looking forward to going.
  6. Haha, hilarious! I get that too! We will be out walking our five month old male std poodle and our 3 & 4 yo toys and get asked if the 'male' std is the mother of the toys! Oh boy, you've just gotta laugh. But something that does irk me bigtime is when people stop me and ask "ooooh is that a Labradoodle?" I usually reply by saying "what is a labradoodle?.......oh isnt that a lab X poodle? No, he is a poodle!"
  7. It is just frustrating thats all. How is it that a customer can know more than the sales staff, it just doesnt seem right. Was at another pet store a few months back (once again was an emergency type visit, had no option) and they were selling std poo pups in there. I noticed that their hind feet were shaved all the way up past the hock. When the sales girl started trying to tell me about the pups I enquired why half their legs were shaved off and she told me that it is the 'correct' and 'traditional' way of grooming a std poodle. In all my years of grooming I have never seen this. Glad she enlightened me to the fact that I have no idea how to do my job. I seriously hate these bloody places, you cant even avoid them at shopping centres. Pets Purgatory shove their poor little pups in the front windows so you still cant avoid the sad little stares. Its horrid. I tend to either get my pet products from the vet, produce stores or online if I can. Saves the displeasure of dealing with idiots.
  8. To make a long story short, my hubby and I were out walking our 5 mo Std Poo and our 3 yo toy bitch yesterday. Toy Bitch got stung on paw by a green ant so we stopped in at a pet store to find some doggy stingos. (Dont usually go to pet stores but couldnt find a chemist that was open and pupper was hurting.) So anyways in we go and instantly we have the female worker come up to us and state "Gee, thats a great size for a Std Poodle" I politely informed her that he is only 5 months old and that no, it is not a good size for a std poo. Then she proceeds to tell me that they are getting in some lovely little chocolate poodles and that she will 'hold' one if i am interested. No thanks. It frustrates me that totally clueless people such as this are allowed to work in the industry and sell dogs, dog products etc to people and give out advice etc which is totally incorrect. You would think that they would at least have a bit of training or something. Now I remember why i dont go into pet stores.
  9. Im so sorry to hear of what you are going thru Chewy. I wish you both peace at this sad time. Do what you feel is right, after all you know Elliot better than anyone and will know when the time is right. Enjoy these last quiet moments with your beautiful boy. Sending you both hugs.
  10. My 8 yr old Smithy came down with Pancreatitis recently and is now on Eukanuba Low Residue Prescription food. She will be on it for the rest of her life. Vet said yes, pancreatitis can kill. Apparently quite painful condition too. My girl had a shot of anti inflammatory and a course of antibiotics. She seems better now, but has to keep the diet under control. Good luck with your dog.
  11. Ive got one and Im near Nudgee (northside) so if need be she can always come over here and do it. Ill also be going to that show at Durack, it should be interesting. Let me know if she needs a hand.
  12. Hi Tanya, When quoting another website, please make sure you give credit to the person who actually wrote it......namely Wikepedia in this instance.
  13. I saw that too! It looks literally like a vacume cleaner! I think there are two sizes right? Not sure what I think of them yet, Id love to actually see one in action. Id definately want a demo before paying for one! I think the smaller one was about $1500 wasnt it? Who knows, it may revolutionise dog washing, or....it may just turn out to be a very expensive gimmic! Either way, Id love to see what kind of a job they do!
  14. Hi Meggsie, I havent had the pleasure of talking to you yet. I joined here a little while ago. I lost my Border 11 weeks ago due to complications caused by epilepsy. Its still hard to talk about. He was on Phenomav for 4 years. 100mg 3 times a day, poor boy. Eventually he had the "big Kahuna" of all Grand Mal seizures and we had to make the awful choice to put him to sleep. Sorry to hear that your dog passed due to the meds. What was he on? Had he been ill for long? I know the meds are very bad for them, they affect the liver and kidneys badly. But what else can you do? Its either let them keep seizing or medicate them and damage their organs.....kind of a "lose, lose" situation hey. Anyways congrats on your new pup, look forward to hearing all about him. Oh and I agree, go the 10-20kg pack just in case, I really dont think you can overdose them. It would take a lot more than that to hurt him. Danielle.
  15. Very good clippers, but one question....why do you need a two speed? Ive got the Km2 and the KMSS and find that I dont need the two speed at all. Just curious thats all.
  16. haha yes i know i got a free pair a while ago, they make good scissors for cutting up bandannas! LOL! Surprised they could even cut that! Hahaha! They can barely cut paper! They are very cheap and nasty. I know a groomer friend of mine uses them, but its only cuz she cant afford something decent. It really depends on what you are doing, if you are grooming on a professional basis, then get something better, but I spose if someone is just grooming their own dog once a month or so, then they would be okay cuz you really couldnt justify spending a thousand dollars on the top quality ones for a home job. But yeah, I thouroughly agree that they are terrible.
  17. I used to use Oster, but they are too heavy and large for my hands. They heat up too much also which can be quite uncomfortable. They seem to be a big, heavy workhorse. I now use the Wahl KMSS and it seems really good, its lightweight and does not heat up, even after hours of grooming. No problems with it at all. And the blades are easy to come by.
  18. I went to Tradetools Direct and bought a Kinchrome electricians case. Its like a massive briefcase with all different sections and little slots for all my shears. It fits pretty much everything and is built solid. Very heavy, but brilliant quality and does the job perfectly! Look up the Kinchrome electicians kits on the net and you should see them. They used to come in black or silver, not sure wat colours are out there now, but worth a try. Mine ran me at $200. May be a bit cheaper or dearer now, not sure.
  19. LOVE Mars and Wahl! Great shears. Also the Santorini are good. I wouldnt go Shear Majic, not very good quality, cheap and nasty.
  20. If you are after top quality Id go the Mars. I got them and they will last me forever. Santorini are pretty good too. Dont go Shear Magic, waste of money. Then there are the Kenchii.....boy are the nice, but so is the price! LOL!
  21. This is what I hate, People who bring in their Bichon and ask me to make it look like a poodle! Or they bring in their Poodle and ask for a Bichon cut! Grrrrr! If u want a poodle, get a poodle, if you want a bichon, get a bichon! I also hate how they ring up and say "Can you please groom my purebred Spoodle?"! WTF? Purebred what? LMAO! You cant tell em either! LOL! Or the ones that demand to be there when little Fifi is getting groomed and then stand there squealing "Fifi! you look so cute girl! Good Fifi!" while you are trying to groom this little dog that is doing backflips on the grooming table! Oh here's one for you all.....the other week I had a girl bring in her severely overgrown and matted Maltese X Shih tzu. I groomed it and made it look great, but the next day she rings me and asks me what is wrong with her dogs "vagina"! I was like "What?!" She then proceeds to tell me that the dog is licking at itself furiously and is red and irritated. I had to explain to this girl that the dog was so matted "down there", that the hair had soaked up its "wee wees" and burnt its skin and then with me using a 10 blade on the sanatary area that would've irritated it some more, so now that that area is hair free, the dog is licking and making itself red raw! How is this my fault??? What could I have done differently? Nothing. Some people have no clue.
  22. I must agree with the above post, you really pointed out a good argument in regards to new breeds. I own a Smithfeild. The Smithy or Timmins Biter was only developed in the 1890's I think (dont quote me!). The ancestry of this dog goes back to the Smithfield Bobtail Sheepdog in the Smithfield meatworks area in london. They brought these bobtailed dogs out, crossed them with a dingo and there ya go, a Smithfeild Stumpy Tail Cattle dog. Now considering these dogs along with the ACD have dingo in them, this MUST affect the evolution of the digestive tract. Just to make a quick point also, the dingo is not classified as a dog. Dogs are under the classification of Canis Familiaris. Dingos are Lupus (wolf) Dingo. The dingos direct ancestry relates back to the Pale (white) Footed Wolf of South East Asia. Would this affect it as well? What are everyone elses thoughts?
  23. I agree with the above posts, its more about the personality of the individual puppy than the sex of it. In my experience as a groomer, I have found that the sex of the dog has no baring on how the animal will behave. (Of course its different with a whole male who thinks he is King Kong!). Out of my 4 dogs, two are male and two are female. One girl is really full on, and one is like a teddy bear. One of the boys is full on, and the other (recently passed) was a big sop! You cant rely on the gender to determine personality. Id suggest to spend some time with your breeder, talk to her about what you want out of your pupppy, because she is the best person who can advise you. Play with all the pups and let your children with them too. If you have no kids, keep in mind that one day you might and that it is important that the dog be well adjusted and good with little ones. Good Luck!
  24. Hmmmm, not sure, that is an interesting point also. Let me know if you find out more....
  25. True. I got talking to my hubby bout this last night and we came up with some interesting ideas. Maybe dogs were once Obligate like cats. Cats can still afford to be obligate carnivores because if you only provide veges to your cat, it will leave the yard and go kill something to eat. Cats can afford to choose what their meal is, and I think that because it is harder to confine a cat, a cat still has choices - a cat still retains a lot of that wild instinct. Dogs dont have that choice and cant afford to ignore their provided meal. Through thousands of years of evolution, a dog has become totally dependant on man and "maybe" we have adjusted their eating habits. Its not like a dog can scale its six foot fence and go kill to eat meat, they dont have the same choices as cats. Im not sure how true this is, it was just some ideas we came up with, but what Id really like to know is "Are wolves Obligate carnivores or not?" That may have some bearing if we humans had anything to do with the dogs current dietry habits.... I might google it to see.
