Food Allergy Not Contact Allergy
Crisovar replied to JulesP's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Could be any one of the ingredients, that's why allergies are so damn hard. You will need to do a proper elimination diet to work it out unfortunately. -
He may need a good going over by a doggy chiro to see if he is maybe out somewhere and is not placing his feet properly causu him to maybe drag his feet a bit.

If the Advocate has worked, you may be looking at mites and not fleas? Advocate works well against mites, where as the other two products are not effective. You are wanting to apply Advocate to the remaining dogs now yes? Just trying to follow sorry. I would ring Bayer and check, I have 2 weeks in my mind, but I would check with Bayer. I have used Advocate 2 weeks after Advantage but not after Frontline.

When Buying From A Registered Breeder Poll 1
Crisovar replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
It is not about a badge of honour, it is about knowing what you want and having the patience to wait until is available. I can't imagine changing breeds just because you click your fingers and it isn't there when you want it. -
I am not in favour of free feeding. I like to know exactly when my dogs are eating, and how much, If someone turns their nose up at their meal here there is a reason and I need to know about it. How a dog is eating, and what they are putting out the other end are both watched here.

Mine don't, and nor do the dogs that belong to responsible, intelligent owners, unless by some freak accident. Keep your dogs on your own property. They are not the responsibilty of the community they are yours alone.

Advice Pls On Vaccinations And Worming
Crisovar replied to Mango's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you read your labels you will find brands that are identical to your name brands. Not all cheaper brands are crap, far from it. -
Unlike other dogs, the Maremma is a guardian breed. Unlike other guardian breeds, the Maremma "tasks" as a last resort. Unlike a Maremma that is not raised properly, they are simply not interested in chasing down other animals. I am excusing here the puppies that were overly playful with the penguins they were ignorantly placed to guard in Victoria. The best, and classically accepted, description of the "the Maremma is 'aloof' -- disinterested but not inattentive. To witness a Maremma's responses, on property in comparison to off property, is truly something to behold. In three years, with adult and puppy dogs, they have had the run of five acres and the adjacent surrounds without incident. However, I digress. Purely, by chance, while out riding my bike, I found a fence that was an absolute masterpiece. There were two paddocks for goats, one 150 x 25 metres and the other much larger. The tension posts and stays were without exaggeration, Beautiful. The square fence wire, parallel and perpendicular at all points. A single strand of barbed wire ran 1200mm above the ground all the way around both paddocks. I was shocked and stunned at the work that had gone into such a magnificent fence. This is a dog fence. My point is: if you are serious about protecting your livestock, then a half hearted, I'll just shoot the dog if it gets into my yard, is contemptuous of both the livestock and the dog or any other animal. I am not sure, that in the current environmental climate, we can afford that luxury any more. So what about the 'chooks'? The idiot should have shut the gate. Lesson: don't let this person look after your chooks. ETA I will get some pictures of the goat fence. It is something which should be shared. So you still maintain that is ok for your dogs and anyone elses to roam in an area where others keep livestock?? Unbelievable arrogance, ignorance and stupidity. Keep your dogs on your own land, that is your responsibility as a dog owner.

Advantix repels biting insects, I however would not rely upon it if you are in a heartworm area.

as above I have seen some sickening sights, one that devastated me was the mare and her foal that were put through the fences by the neighbours "just out for a run" dogs.

Um Isnt Showing A Desexed Bitch Wrong?
Crisovar replied to Missymoo's topic in General Dog Discussion
Uhm......yes they do! In fact in QLD it is compulsory, in fact it is an offence under the Animal Management Act for a Veterinary Surgeon to fail to tattoo at time of desexing. -
I empty and clean all water containers daily, it doesn't take long.

Overdosing of medications and products is very common, people don't read labels, or simply are in too much of a hurry to do something, and animals helping themselves happens a lot too. How many people do you know that split large doses down for small animals??? Lots of accidents happen there too. Without thorough testing products do not get registered and we do not get the benefits of having the info at hand when we need it.

shoot the dogs! :D Maybe you should check the gun barrel with your eye to see if there are any bullets left. Pulling the trigger, is usually a good indicator. I've been on property for three years and the puppies have absconded at times. Any neighbour who shoots another persons dog, particularly if they are known to be another neighbours pet, might as well move interstate. We don't want them here. Capital punishment for dogs. What about all the cats???? Keep your dogs home and you wont have a problem. Dogs do get shot for worrying, chasing or attacking stock. Even neighbours pets cause problems.

Thats the problem we are on two acres how do you spray two acres and what with? Spray unit either pressure pump up or electric pump, can sometimes be hired it you don't want to buy one although they are always useful, for weed spray insecticide etc. Solfac, Coopex, Malaban, Nucidol etc, any sandy areas, under shrubs, under the house, concrete areas, paving etc.

If there is a heavy infestation in the house and yard you will see still see fleas as the animals are constantly being infested with new ones that then die, until you break the cycle you will see them. Flea Bombs or sprays for the house, with Insect Growth Regulators in them to kill the eggs and larvae. Vacuum everywhere inside, all skiting boards, soft furnishings, every where. Wash all animal bedding. Outside you will need to spray everywhere, and probably repeat every week for a while. Comfortis is excellent but in heavy infestations you will keep seeing some fleas, because it only kills adult fleas. Advantage fortnightly, with Capstar twice weekly and spraying the environment works well. There is no cheap and easy solutions when we are having seasons like this.

Inside pets or outside pets?
-
Sadly many people do, they are the same people who PTS the dog for snapping after it has been run over by kid on a rideon toy, cut with scissors or had things jammed down its ears. We have people walking on this planet that believe a dog should put up with anything their kids dish out. Every year dogs die because of the unreal expectations we as a society have.

Grooming Product To Give Hair Fullness
Crisovar replied to DLB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Different products suit different coats :D -
The only thing that is an absolute here is that the kid should not have been allowed near the dog when it was eating. It is such a simple rule and was one that is seems has been forgotten in the mists of time along with common sense. LEAVE THE DOG ALONE WHEN IT IS EATING OR ASLEEP. I don't care who you are, or how gifted and talented your kid is with dogs, simple rules save lives.

Has Anyone Tried Natures Gift Products
Crisovar replied to shyfig's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We use the cans and the treat strips, have not tried the kibble. The cans are very well received, and have never caused a stomach upset, we have them on hand all the time for the oldies and as emergency rations. -
Sometimes the clients are just too plain difficult to deal with too, but that's another story

I find it hard to believe the dog has been anywhere near a Vet. Bit like the dog developed all over matting over night stories, that we all know are porkie pies.

Um Isnt Showing A Desexed Bitch Wrong?
Crisovar replied to Missymoo's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dog shows don't assess whether or not a dog can do the job for which it was bred; they're judged on running around a little ring. It might give an idea of movement but not of breeding potential. I disagree, for a dog to function in its original capacity they need the structure and soundness dictated in the breeds standard, that most certainly should be what is being judged. Judging against the blueprint for the breed is nothing to be scoffed at. I certainly have used the show ring as a place to look and assess, it is a useful tool, although not the only one, judging dogs against the standard is a key piece of the puzzle. Wouldn't you get a better idea of structure and soundness if your breed was doing the job for which it was bred? Precisely. If you have access to those things sure, but the show ring is still a very valuable tool, IMO you can learn a hell of a lot by sitting ringside watching the dogs, looking at the progeny of sires and bitches, it all adds up. It is certainly in no shape or form useless. When was the last time you watched a pack of Wheatens or Kerries in action. -
