  1. Fly bite? Cat scratch? Pop some Troy fly repellent cream or some vaseline and citronella on it if it could be fly bites.
  2. Yet vets will dob in people with docked or debarked dogs... Some mongrels do but most just do their job, which is not law enforcement.
  3. Vets are not police or local law enforcers, they are animal health care providers.
  4. Some people don't like to mess around adding supplements.
  5. Advance do a senior food, I have quite a few clients who have their oldies on it and do well. It has added joint support ingredients.
  6. Anywhere your dog has been there will be fleas, the eggs roll off your dog and land wherever the dog happens to be, your car, your house your yard. Unless you treat the environment those eggs that hatch into larvae will continue to re infest your dog.
  7. In a perfect world dogs that are incubating a disease would flash pink lights too, you can be exposed to disease anywhere, you can even walk it into your yard or drive it in on your tyres.
  8. Yep. It is the sort of crap that is continually bleated on here that is leading to the future demise of dog ownership in this country. You want a dog? You want a well bred dog? You want a healthy dog? You don't want to wait a couple of years for a dog? Too bad all the breeders are walking away, the old breeders who had a clue, who could manage their animals in numbers and knew the pedigrees and their breed inside out are walking, many have already walked. Once the big kennels were held in high esteem, their animals highly prized and sort after, now they are shunned and accused of neglect and mistreatment. Even the smaller breeders are copping it, because every tom dick and harry knows better. If you own more than * you are scum, if you don't show you are scum, if you advertise in the paper, own a couple of breeds, make a bit of profit and on it goes. When you can't buy a dog for love nor money and all the breeders have packed up and gone, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.
  9. My above friend has had two litters in the last few months, 1 Whippet and 1 Beagle and I think has another due in a month or so for yet another breed. All up she owns about 7-8 breeds - I don't see a problem with it. 50 dogs???? It is an impossibility to ensure that all 50 dogs are given proper care and invidual attention. Yes, that does constitute a puppy miller! She is breeding as a means to earn herself a considerable income and that is a NO NO. It is a disgrace! Really!! have you seen the setup have you seen the dogs, do you know these people???? Assuming again.
  10. Snakes are found all over the country, unless you live in a high rise. Seriously the chances of coming across one in the middle of suburbia are not high but also not impossible. The majority of our early season snake bites came from town not from the rural areas.
  11. MY point exactly, sparkycat. I am apalled that some posters here are of the opinion that it is "vexatious" to report a puppy miller, I would have thought that breeders...esp from this forum would have been up in arms about puppy farmers but instead all kinds of excuses are being entered into as a means to defend them, go figure Report for what???? What do you people want acted upon?? It is not ILLEGAL, for someone to act there has to be something wrong. No one is defending puppy farmers, but authorities can only act if there is something illegal happening, there is NOTHING illegal about breeding even in large numbers. Come up with proof of cruelty or breaking of laws and bylaws and then someone can act upon it, but you can not report something simply because you disagree with it. Unless you have something for authorities to act on you simply come across as a raving nutter. Find something illegal, find something that breaks bylaws then go for it.
  12. The writing has been on the wall for years and every time someone has pointed out where this is heading we have been laughed at and accused of scaremongering, well folks just what does it take before everyone wakes and sees what is happening. I've had half a century with my dogs, I'm glad I have, I wouldn't have missed it for the world, I hope to have them into my old age, many of you reading this will not be so lucky, your grandkids certainly wont.
  13. If they are too lazy to remove the sign long after the pups are gone is an indication that perhaps they are too lazy to look after the dogs adequately...besides which...would you want to be hassled by people dropping by wanting to buy a pup when you no longer have any? or is it convenient for the simple reason that their name can be jotted down in preparation for the very next litter which may be just around the corner? Wow, that's an assumption if I've ever heard one. I am too lazy sometimes to make vacuum my floors, does that mean in your eyes I am too lazy to look after my dogs adequately. Again, your idea of 'people dropping by and hassling to buy a pup' is an assumption in two ways - 1. that is a hassle and 2. that people drop by in sufficient numbers. I had a website, it was available 24/7 and available to far more people than a roadside sign. I wasn't drowning in email enquiries. I did recieve quite a good number, but I liked this as it afforded me a waiting list. Thses people might also work via a waiting list. Who knows, as I said, everything your are saying is illogical or an assumption based on your predjudice. Of course it is all an assumption....both from myself and the other posters! We are all assuming, lol. Prejudice? well, that is your prerogative....I DO NOT like large scale breeding facilities and that is all there is to it! You and most here don't like them, but unless you are actually armed with evidence that the owners are in fact doing something that is illegal, breaks by laws or are mistreating or neglecting their animals, then there is nothing that can be done to stop them. Breeding animals even on a large scale is not illegal, no matter how distasteful we find it.
  14. Why? the more people through the business the more pressure on them to keep things up tp scratch.
  15. Sorry OT but... how stressful your home must of been... or did you end up getting use to it? but i admire your dedication to keep both dogs though Once you have a plan and put it all into place it is much less stressful than waiting for the next explosion. For us managing animals is a way of life, it is what we do. Founder prone ponies on limited grazing, bitches in season, dogs that don't like each other, animals with special diets it is all part of the day to day routine. Small price to pay for the pleasure they give.
  16. If you read the AUSTRALIAN label the manufacturer actually does promote giving the Proheart at the same time as annual vaccination. Australian vets are only following manufacturers recommendations. However I personally would not use the product. My Vet does not recommend it at all.
  17. I have lived with 2 dogs that hated each other, they were NEVER allowed to be together EVER, and we kept them separate for 12 years until one of them passed away last year. It was hard work but it was the only way we could keep them both. Totally separate, a secure escape proof dog run that one had to be locked in whilst the other was in the yard. One is the house, one outside, one locked up one out loose. Crate training made separation inside easy. We just played musical dogs. It was quite simply not worth the risk of a serious fight that ended up in tragedy. I must add that both these dogs were totally reliable with other dogs and children etc. They simply hated each other. Keeping them apart is the only way to ensure you have no accidents. If you cannot manage them safely and that means that everyone in the household has to be on the same page, then one of the dogs needs to be rehomed or pts.
  18. Given monthly Milbemax does cover Heartworm as well. I don't use it but yes it is registered for Heartworm prevention.
  19. I was going to suggest pumpkin for the OP to try. Big fans of steamed or boiled mashed pumpkin for the dogs here. The dogs all love their pumpkin
  20. If you think you can handle the grooming requirements and keep up with training and activity that a smart active breed needs, then there is no reason why a Jap Spitz wouldn't be suitable.
  21. Of course puppies require a lot of attention, but if you think that you have to be at home 24/7 to raise a pup you are dead wrong. It is quite possible to work and raise a pup, and do it properly.
  22. Some training session daily even if it is teaching her tricks will work her brain also, GSDs need to exercise the brain as well as the body. 20 minutes of teaching something that she has to work at is as good as an off leash run for my girl.
  23. Its everything to do with hormones and growth. Cut off the hormones and you change the growth pattern of bones with life long results for the dog's conformation. When talking about a x-bred pup I don't think you really need to be concerned about the dog's confirmation. Many many pups (large and small) are desexed by 6 months of age and have no problem with their development. The vet can often feel if there is a testicle sitting there waiting to come down and even at 5-6 months they can desex and remove both. Even cross breed pups deserve the chance to grow up and develop to their full potential as nature intended.
  24. There are many reasons why dogs bark, it is not always the result of a disturbed unhappy dog. Some dogs simply like to hear the sound of their own voice, they bark playing, they bark when they are running around in the yard, they bark at butterflys. Debarking dogs does not deprive them of anything, it is not cruel. They still bark but they are toned down. Having seen the results of pissed of neighbours and councils I fully support the procedure, it saves many lives.
