Thanks showdog for your input. I'm learning something today... which is more than I can say for the training I am doing at work

Can we do stays under a gazebo? That's even if I make it to stays! Ruby doesn't have a rain jacket. If she did, she'd need one with a hood too, the big wuss.... Just got Mason's raincoat in the mail today, he is so funny though as he wont move when he is wearing it he freezes, if I let him wear it for stays it would be cheating Can I borrow it?

Possibly Of course the rules change once again if you want a Mains registered dog, so if the right dog came along, had a good relationship with the breeder, and it all fit and felt right then I'd be open to co-ownership. Thanks, good to know

Not that it matters for this "debate", but if I get into showing, it won't be with a Labrador I do hear you about trying to get a good show dog, especially a bitch. That is why I am open to a dog as well as a bitch for my next dog I got Ruby's papers a week after she came home, but knew they were coming because her breeder asked me for my current address so that the papers could be sent there. Which leads me to another question (genuine one! I'm very interested in how all this works!) To those breeders who withhold papers until desexing with the contract, do your puppy buyers know up front that they won't be receiving the papers and at what point in the process are they informed? It's just that I assumed I'd get them with Ruby (which lucky I did), so I never actually ASKED. Is it a case of if the breeder doesn't mention not getting them, you will, or is it a case of breeder doesn't mention papers at all and they are still withheld until contract condition is met? If I buy a puppy in the future and I don't mention receiving papers (which I wouldn't have thought to do so until this topic came up), how much of risk am I at not receiving them and the dog being in my name ASAP if neither party mention it?
-
Yep. She was getting this, then uncertainty crept in again, made her lose her footing slightly, then she crapped herself for the zillionth time I'm probably going to leave it for a bit, then introduce it again slightly. I have no idea if this uncertaintly has been transferred to the A-Frame, too. No doubt it would have!

Thing is, I've never approached a breeder asking about getting papers up front! I was blissfully unaware that getting them wasn't a given. I knew the differences when buying Ruby between Main and Limited, and was wanting Limited (which is a good thing hey because Main wasn't going to be on offer ) and just assumed that the Limited Registration would be in my name when buying the puppy. In this instance, I assumed right, the breeder had it transferred over to me right away without me even mentioning it. Now I see that this isn't the case with all breeders.

She was keen to heel for you though! She was in perfect heel position and looking up at you while you were trying to get her to go up! I guess she fell back on what she knows to avoid the torturous dogwalk

While I am getting frustrated and anxious and playing a part in solving the problem, I don't think she would go over it with a change of handler, as much fun as she thinks you are! Amy tried last night and couldn't get her to go up it either, we just managed to get her to jump onto the end of it and come downwards. But hey, you are very welcome to try, you know I never say no to getting help!

Thanks for that!! So much to organise Probably not much of a spectator sport, nothing like agility anyway! Most times you can't really see the full run, but it is interesting to watch if it is of interest to you!

I guess I am looking at this from the perspective of a puppy buyer who wants more than "just a pet", and who has a bit more knowledge on going about buying a pedigree dog than say the average Joe Blow off the street. If a pet person insisted on papers upfront, sure I'd think that would seem a little odd too, but I wouldn't dismiss them until I found out more about them and why they are even mentioning papers. Any future breeder I approach will be informed of my desire to trial my dog in dog sports as I am currently doing with my dogs, and I am also contemplating showing my next one if I can find a breeder who will allow me to purchase one from them (if not then I'll just stick to activities I know ) I consider myself a very responsible dog owner with only the best intentions for my dog/s and the breed/s, and with no intentions of breeding (responsibly or irresponsibly!), so I didn't think having the dog registered in my name at the time of purchase would be such an issue. My next dog will be many, MANY years off, and the decision won't be made lightly. I'll be researching breeders well in advance and building up a relationship with them so I'm not just a random puppy buyer to them. I will know earlier on then if we are a good match for a puppy "transaction" I hope that makes sense and gives a little more insight into why I think that way. Not trying to have an all-out debate on the topic and make any enemies over it, as I rarely speak my mind on controversial topics! Just wanted to show that I am seeing this from someone who I guess lies somewhere in between the breeder and average pet buyer Edit for spelling :D

Yep I am going to give her a break from it I think... which means no class. But that doesn't bother me, I get more done on a Thursday night anyway. The only thing I don't have is an experienced instructor to help me with my crappy handling skills But you're getting good at giving tips Amy, you can be my mentor I will continue dog walk with Millie, though, you saw how keen she was to fly over it And her 2o2o is coming along nicer than Ruby's at the moment! Maybe Ruby is only cut out to be a jumping dog Which is a pretty funny concept considering she sucks at jumping unless she has a huge runup

Now I Know It's Not Really My Business But....
RubyStar replied to Charlotte*Paddington's topic in General Dog Discussion
My guess is she isn't, or she wouldn't have just given her dog away to the first person who came along. I realise that rehoming is sometimes necessary, but there are more responsible ways to go about it than palming it off for free on gumtree -

Can't exactly call the old owner here responsible. They gave away for free their 8 year old dog, no vetting done of the new home, and didn't even get the new owners details Hope the old girl finds her forever home to retire in, in loving peace!! -
Ruby had about a years break from anything resembling a ramp. She freaked herself out over the ramp I bought for the new car, but then never used it cos she wouldn't get on it and Millie is able to jump in the car with ease. I just accepted the fact that this was a phobia she has and didn't push it again. But now I want to do agility with her, we need to get over this phobia. After the years break from the ramp, I showed her a full size dogwalk and even though she went over it cautiously, she did it. Once that was over with, she realised it was no big deal and proceeded to keep running across it. If she did that I didn't want to call her off or get her to turn around on it cos I knew if she fell off, that would be the end of the dogwalk for her. She hasn't fallen off, but has lost her footing slightly due to being cautious after the seesaw, and now she's back to packing herself! Maybe I will just give it a rest for a bit, which will also mean withdrawing her from classes. There is no point going to a class that needs to have a dogwalk and seesaw happening to progress. I'll just keep training it on my own at a pace that suits her. I'm lucky I have access to equipment on another training night that I don't have to wait in a queue to use Well unless amypie is hogging it (kidding )
-
Yes, have been backchaining it, have been rewarding for being near it, have been rewarding for touching it, have had her running over it flat no problems, but when there is an incline, she freaks out. Placing her on the end she does it but looks terrified.

At least with the rain I will have a good reason to use my new shelter! But if it's too windy, then putting it up may be an issue... Hope I can get it up before the rain hits

I have a dog with an intense fear of dogwalks Still no better after tonight's training session. Sigh ETA: And I have another dog who I swear if she could talk, she'd be squealing "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!" as she flies across the dog walk, fearless!!
-
mirawee, I respect your decision to do so, and I am no way saying it is wrong or passing judgement on your decision. I'm just stating how I personally feel on the topic and what I look for in a breeder and dog. There is nothing wrong with that either

I was thinking about this while cooking dinner (the amazing part of this story is I was actually cooking ) and though it's rare, you have to remember there are also dodgy breeders out there. What if the "pet dog" who went out to a family turned out to be a wonderful example of the breed, the breeder could be dodgy and claim that dog back as theirs, because afterall, it is still registered to them. There was a thread not long ago about breeders terms, and one of the conditions a breeder wanted was if the dog turned out great, they have the right to take that dog back! LabRat, Ruby I got as a puppy from a breeder on Limited Register, while Millie I got as an adult from Labrador Rescue I think it's pretty clear I have no intention of breeding. I willingly desexed Ruby, there was no desexing contract with the breeder, and I got a rescue who a) comes desexed and b) definitely doesn't have any papers!!
-
But you will get the papers Just as soon as a sterilisation certificate is sent to the breeder ;) Well in my case anyway In fact we got the sterilisation certificate with a nice photo of the dog with his new "parents" and a thank you card However I can see how people more in the know would be more put off by it than regular pet owners ;) But that is my point, getting them after sterilisation for me personally "puts me off" ;) The dog is still technically owned by the breeder until such time. I prefer my girls to have a season before sterilisation (note I said season, NOT pregnancy!! :p) so the dog would not be techcnically mine for quite a while. It's just a feeling I don't like Though I do understand why some breeders choose to do this, not everyone can be trusted. A breeder is within their right to do so, no arguments there! But as a responsible dog owner, I am aware that I have the option to seek out a breeder that suits my needs as well as me suiting theirs ;) To me a breeder/buyer relationship is important so you need to find a good match up front. I couldn't be happier with my relationship with the lady who bred Ruby

It's really sad that some dodgy, dodgy people ruin it for others when it comes to the puppy sterilization/withholding papers debate. I understand where breeders are coming from and why some are doing this, but can't help but be saddened that it is because of those dodgy people out there that us responsible ones have to "suffer" Breeding from my dog isn't on my wishlist, but getting the papers and the dog truely being in my name, is. Not having a go at anyone either, just having my 2 cents worth, not that it is worth anything

Woollies? There's a new one there? I was referring to the one in the Murray St mall.
-
I'll just be happy for today to be over and I can go spend a few hours training the doggies
-
Bugger, no Coles in the city, only Woollies. And I can't be bothered walking 10 minutes to Woollies, either 2 Red Bull's for $5 at a lot of places though, might take that option
