Penny did something that I'm not sure fits into a sense of humour, but it certainly seemed to have a very human quality about it. I think she thought it was funny. A friend used to have a German shepherd who although wasn't aggressive, was full of bluff and would run at my whippets barking. Eventually they realised they didn't need to be afraid of her, but they weren't friends of hers, I think they still felt a bit intimidated by her. At the park my friend would leave his van open while he walked her, and Penny would often jump in the back for a snoop around, sometimes there was a bone that she would steal. One day she jumped in snooped around and jumped out again, but something about her body language made me think, what have you just done, she looked so smug and pleased with herself. I had a look and there was a fresh steaming turd!!!!

Wouldn't this by definition only affect dilute dogs? I've read somewhere of a black dog having it.
-
I think they do. They also have a sense of make believe. They play with toys that they know aren't real animals and yet they get great pleasure from making them squeak or pulling the stuffing out of them.

thanks T. Yep they're lots of fun. I saw them again yesterday I wonder how many K's I've clocked up driving back and forth. mmmmmmmmmmmmm sleeeeep wonderful sleeeeeep 5F6A8036dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr Until.......... I was on puppy watch again yesterday. They're really lively and are exploring more of the house now, only the linoed areas, no carpet, but they still managed to find a rug to do wees on. Getting alot harder to photograph because they're mobile and keep running up to me and crawling all over me. a bloke posted these pics of a Malinois and his handler on a photography forum. I thought anyone interested in dog training might like to see them. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1326396

I'm sorry to read that Jazz too has gone now No, it's never long enough. So true *sigh* thanks for your comments. I might take her to the vet just for a bit of a check up, it's not urgent but I'll probably do it soon anyway, just to see if there's anything else I can be doing for her to keep her comfortable.

are you far from the breeder. They might be willing to care for the puppy for the day.

My lovely whippet girl Penny is 14.5 years old now and for the last couple of years has been getting increasingly wobbly and frail. I've had her to the vet and there's nothing particularly wrong with her other than getting old. She's on Meloxicam for her arthritis. Lately I've also noticed her voice has changed. It's sort of squeaky and breathy, not the robust strong bark she used to have, it's almost like she's loosing her voice. Could it be some kind of creeping paralysis that is now affecting her vocal chords? She seems otherwise happy, in fact it was as she was doing her happy bark that made me think about how her voice has changed. Is it just a normal condition of aging? I've never had a dog this old before.

Poor girl, looks like she's been through alot. Has she been speyed as yet, she almost looks like she's either coming into or coming off a season. -
what about setting an electric fence up inside your boundary fence. You can buy portable electric fence controllers that take 4 D cell batteries. Horse people use them when they take their horses away to shows, camping etc. I recently lent mine to a friend to reinforce her boundary fence in a rental property. The initial outlay would cost a bit, you'd have to buy the electric tape and fence posts, but you can take it with you when you leave.

who or what exactly is the horse puppy? I know of IGs and big dogs living together.

thanks for the suggestions Beltar. DD I'm not really worried, actually I'd call her Fame if I'd thought it up, regardless of what anyone else thought, but my hesitation with it is that my Mother had a cat she named Fame.
-
I'll tell the breeder, his Mum doesn't like the name Fame  so I'm still on the lookout for a name that will please EVERYONE.

thankyou both :) They're 5 weeks old today and I went down because their owner has been called away suddenly so I kept an eye on them, and took my camera of course. I've been chastised because I've been favouring my girl Here's boy #1 I really noticed their faces have lengthened even since I saw them last Tuesday. 5F6A7739dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr 5F6A7769dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr My girl 5F6A7759dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr She might be the smallest now but that doesn't stop her being bossy 5F6A7776dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr 5F6A7777dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr small but mighty  5F6A7779dpptcr by kirislin, on Flickr and boy #2 who at this stage is looking like the pick of the litter.
