My Foster Dog Made Me Buy A New Camera....
Kirislin replied to Burkes's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
hahaha, what a great excuse for buying a camera! the photos are a bit small for my poor eyes to see, even when I clicked on them. can you make them a bit bigger? -
You're doing great! Another Canonite. What lenses did you get with it. There's a really good Canon forum called POTN.
-
that's really cute, but I bet she's telling fibs.

I cant help but I wanted to say good on you for doing something for these pups and their mum. I hope it all works out well. I haven't got much but I'd be happy to donate some $ towards their desexing if it ever comes to that.

Dont worry, you're not the only one. I paid heaps more than I should've for my first DSLR too, but even so I still dont regret buying it, I loved that first camera.

Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
Kirislin replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
It must break your heart. Your babies, they were so lovely. -
Her owner is taking her to Gap next week for assessment. Because she wasn't fully trained to race she will probably be fairly easy to place. I got her Mum to bring around a crate this evening. After last nights little adventure that had her chewing my vacuum cleaner cord off, no more, she's getting locked up tonight.

It's so exciting, you will be like a kid at Christmas when it arrives. Welcome to the Canon club.
-
yeah, he's a bit scared of her and, I think, a bit jealous. She very shyly came into my bedroom today and went to lay on the floor and he immediately lay on the very spot she chose and snapped at her, as if to say, this is my spot.
-
This is what I am doing basically, although when I tried to settle her last night I reverted by habit with mine of saying "Good night" when I was covering her with her blankie. She might have to go with a whole new set of operating instructions that dont use the common commands. She's a darling but she hasn't read the Greyhound hand book that says they're couch potatos, she wants to play! She's only a puppy though, I think she's about 18 months old. I cant help feeling sorry for the racing greys, they must be so bored when they're not racing. I hear some trainers complain about how some trash their bedding and I think to myself, no wonder, they're bored out of their brains.
-
awww, looks to me like she's not helping, she's saying Mum, get off the damn computer and play with me!
-
It's a dog couch but you're right, she wont know the difference. It's OK though cause she wont get on it anyway. I took her up the park today for the first time. Initially she was terrified of all the other dogs because she's only ever seen whippets and greyhounds before, and today she saw labs, golden retrievers, kelpie and all sorts of x breds. She had her hackles up at first so we walked on ahead of the main group. After a while I stopped to chat to 2 other ladies with dogs and just stood and let her take it all in. She was really good and started to relax a bit. I took her on a second walk about an hour later and when she got out of the car this time she was wagging her tail. She hardly responds to her name at all though and doesn't seem particularly food motivated so I think it will be a while before she starts coming when called. I am wondering how I will teach her to lay down. Every other dog I've trained has been a puppy small enough for me to physically put them into a position to help them understand, but she is a big lump, not something I can manipulate. She's learning to climb into the car though and is catching on to the command UP and WAIT. I think she's a clever girl, we'll get there.

I think the movie Psycho made bathrooms spooky. I too prefer the second purely for that reason. I wish I could stretch my legs out in my bath, I've got one of those piddling little short ones where you have a choice of either freezing your knees or your torso. I'd love one where I could stay submerged with just my head above water.

Thanks Kirty, I didn't realise why BB thought she was big, I was looking and thinking no, she's not very big, but I can see why you might think she was a giant if you thought Puck was also a greyhound. She is quite fine and elegant but she isn't heavily muscled yet cause she's not in racing condition, plus she's still very young, only about 18months old I think so she's got that fine willowy look. I just to up to check how she is and the little fiend has chewed my vacuum cleaner cord through. Lucky it wasn't turned on at the switch as it often is. I thought everything would be safe once she was bedded down for the night, looks like I'd better put my camera and accessories in a safe place.

She's very playful and inquisitive. Makes me wonder how bored they must be in kennels all day. I thought she was quiet so went and checked, she was up on the dog couch and and taken the cover off a pillow, and collected a few items she decided were toys, except they weren't. I took her outside for a play and afterwards I came inside. Heard a noise and again checked. She'd discovered my beautiful green (toy) frogs on the bird bath and started taking them. I've had to hide them now. Here she is playing with 11 year old Penny who is still as lively and agile as a puppy. and Puck (the whippet) who looks like he thinks she's about to kill him, he's not sure about her.
-
I dont think she will be hard to rehome because she hasn't been raced so doesn't carry any injuries, is young, and didn't show any interest in chasing, although she just had a big game of chasey with the boys outside, but that's different. Tomorrow I will take her up the park to introduce her to dogs of all shapes and sizes. Since she's lived a fairly sheltered life until now it should be quite an experience for her.
-
Cut it out the lot of you!! She's not staying, she cant! nononononononono! She's already starting to play. She's decided she likes my water plants. I've got some canna? calla? lilies in the frog pool till I decide where I want them and she repeatedly pulled one out. I'd put it back and she'd pick the same one every time, fish it out and run off with it. I was scared she'd eat it and I dont know if they're poisonous so I've hidden it now. blowing bubbles, blub blub blub.
-
She's already worked out the doggy door so hopefully will take herself out when she needs to go, although I want her to learn to ask as well, for those times she might be somewhere without a dog door.
-
We've just been having cuddles on the couch, I had to show her how to get up but once there she needs no training in smooching. Puck isn't impressed, he puts his hackles up and growls quietly. The girls have mostly ignored her. Tag was a bit barky at first but is settling now. Time will tell. She is very green though, not sure about coming inside but instantly understood the doggy door that mine are still to get the hang of. My biggest concern for now is making sure she doesn't toilet in the house. She's not trained at all so I'll have to watch her like a hawk as I bet her bladder would hold a bucketfull!

This is Bosley. She is a race bred greyhound, full sister to the fabulous Drill 'em who's been nominated for Greyhound of the Year, but they dont all turn out to be champions and Bosley wont even be tried. Her owner/breeders have decided not to pursue training her. She didn't show alot of interest and rather than push her they've decided to put her straight into a pet home. I offered to take her for a while to teach her some house manners, house training the most important, so she can learn how to be a pet. She's only been here an hour or so and is a bit nervous of my crew. She's scared of the camera too, hopefully when she gets to know me she wont be frightened and I might get some good shots of her. I've discovered she's a grinner too so I will try to get some smiling photos too. But anyway, meet Bosley.

What? Greyhounds don't need to be 'blooded' any more than your whippets do. The closeness or otherwise of your relationship with your dog is irrelevant. It's just bullshit. And just because PercyK runs into a silly, ignorant loud-mouthed cow has never bothered to learn about the proper way to train dogs, doesn't mean what she says is true. There are far more effective and reliable ways to get a dog chasing than to 'blood' it. But instead we get scum trying to justify the practice. It is cruel and totally inexcusable. And the people that talk about it and say it's necessary should have their filthy mouths washed out. Mmmmm, no need to swear at me. It didn't really come out right though, I admit. I dont see why they need to blood greyhounds but it almost sounds like I think it's necessary because of the way they are raised. That is definitely not what I meant to say. I think anyone caught doing it should be jailed and banned from owning greyhounds for life, that is what I'd like to see.

I watched you on the news clip. You are so brave, what courage you've shown. I cannot imagine the heartache and pain you've gone through. Sending you good wishes for a full recovery and hope you are back with your beloved animals very soon. -
these are all just beautiful. You will treasure them when the kids grow up, and I think, so will the kids. They'll be impressed with their mums photographic talent too.

I raced my whippets, it was purely amateur but they were keener than alot of racing greyhounds and I never blooded them. It might be because greyhounds are more laid back than whippets or maybe because I have a closer relationship with my whippets and was able to incite them purely by talking to them.
