  1. So glad to see that Ollie is home, Jodie! He's such a trooper Jack's crate is available if you need it to keep Ollie-dog quiet. It sounds like a slow, calm walk would do you both good if Hamish says it's OK.
  2. I don't know anything about it, either, Jodie but it doesn't sound like good news Keep us posted ;)
  3. Looks like it's time to do some online research ... the bum bag we have used until now has finally got such a huge hole that it hardly holds treats any more! Thanks for the tips, everyone
  4. Ah, well, then you would need a wire crate ... a good investment for use at training, when on holidays etc ... maybe Beau could ask for one from Santa
  5. If you have a month to prepare, I would start crate-training Beau now and not use a stake (although I've never tried them). Will Beau fit into Sascha's crate, meaning you won't need to buy another? A crate would be safest for Beau, in case an aggro dog got off-leash somehow or in case of a wayward child ... most clubs seem to have had issues with a wayward child or off-lead dog causing trouble for a tethered, unsupervised pooch. And much as you'd try to keep your eye on Beau will training Sascha, you can't be watching all the time. Just my 2c
  6. Thanks, HR Calling Erny ... (that's a "yoo hoo", not an "eek" )
  7. No, but I like to walk him to training so I have to carry *everything* with me ... phone, keys, money, poo bags, treats. I'm thinking I'll order the Black Dog one. They look to be pretty cheap from the VAAT Shelter Shop. Kelpie-i, if you happen to read this, can you remember the details of the bag your friend bought for you?
  8. Oh, Jodie, what a day Ollie is in the right hands, though. Hope your hubby is OK, and you know where we are if you need anything ... dinner, shopping or whatever
  9. Argh! Another one? Fingers crossed for the sweet lad.
  10. A Husher may be good for LP to use while she's at home watching from inside ... dog barks ... she (calmly) goes outside and places the muzzle on the dog ... lots of praise for being quiet ... Husher gets removed etc But please never leave a Husher on an unattended dog.
  11. That link is brilliant, ML! Thanks for that I haven't ever cut Jack's nails ... his toe nails wear down naturally through walking and he chomps on his own dew claws if they're getting long or sharp. Should I let him continue to do this, or should I be cutting the dew claws? I handle his paws all the time, checking between the pads during and after walks etc, just in case I need to get him used to having his toe nails trimmed one day.
  12. I have a Sporn halter for Jack (30kg heeler X) which I bought on a holiday in the US when my in-laws were staying. He was too strong for them to walk and, yes, with the Sporn he couldn't pull nearly as much. I don't use it regularly, as we obedience train on a check chain and hope to move to a flat collar somewhere down the track. Apart from making it easier for my elderly in-laws to walk Jack, I found it really useful in the Canberra winter, when I prefer to do our early morning walk with my hands in my pockets!! As others have said, it's a tool to manage the pulling but in Jack's case, it didn't magically teach him to stay at heel or something. Hope that helps!!
  13. Gotta love that sense of humour, Jodie Let us know what the vet says tomorrow. Here's hoping it's a temporary or, at least, easily fixed problem.
  14. RIP, cheeky Flynn. Jump those fences at the Rainbow Bridge
  15. Spearmint oil is supposed to be an insect repellant, too. Lavender, I think, reduces skin irritation and hot spots?

    Lucy

18 is a mighty respectable time to say goodbye. Rest easy, Lucy
  17. Hmm ... an interesting purchase, to be sure! What I'm wondering is how on Earth you found it? Do you have favourite search for "rabbit fur tug toy" or something?! It looks like a great find, anyway. Let us know if it works! There's a redneck at the uni with a fox tail attached to the roof of his hotted-up ute ... I'm happy to procure that in the name of increasing your Viszlas' prey drive
  18. Hugs to you, Danny and the hounds, Fifi. Molly was a special girl and you gave her her wings at the right time. It's so hard to be so kind, but you've done the right thing. Cherish the memories and don't trip in any of her final holes!!

    Fat Boy

Enjoy the freedom of eternal good health, Fat Boy. It sounds like you'll be sorely missed.
  20. We'd love to! All the extended family are scattered around that area, from Anglesea to Kilsyth and everywhere in between! We've been saying we'd go down and visit them all sometime so perhaps this will be the impetus. So the herding trials are held out near the airport? Hmm, my uncle lives near Essendon ... Not sure if Jack would like his GSD, though. This thread has certainly given us something to think about! Perry's Mum takes Perry the koolie herding from time to time. I naively thought it was only the sheep-dogs that were really allowed to do it, but it sounds like all herding breeds and crossbreeds are welcome? I just know Jack would be a handful, but geez it sounds like fun. We'll be taking Jack with us in the new year when we visit rellies on the other side of the family, up near Armidale and Inverell ... I was thinking of bringing him to my brother-in-law's farm to see how he'd go but I'd rather see him with a professional handler first, I think. Maybe THEN we can see how he goes in the real world.
  21. Wow, that looks like fun! I just adore Banjo's ever-floppy left ear And love the spectators in many of those shots So none of the dogs that had never seen sheep showed any fear or aggression toward them? I'd love to take Jack to a herding workshop but I have no idea how he would react. He saw his first horse a few weeks back and froze, then pointed! I think he thought it was a fecking huge dog in its blankie and all ... he chases birds, bunnies and would chase a cat if he could get near one so I'd be a bit worried. Hmm, it might be worth a try some time ... Anyway, thanks for sharing the wonderful shots from your day. Still waiting for Sky's pics, too, right?
  22. Sorry to hear of your loss, Pesh. Sir Bastion was clearly much loved. :D
  23. Poor. itchy Keg. Bet he'd look fetching with a pair of Stubbies to match that singlet, though ... I don't know whether it does the same thing, but lots of Asian grocers sell some type of aloe vera "juice" in small cans ... could be worth a peek at the ingredients list? How much is the dog supposed to ingest? I'd try putting it on my finger and smearing it all over his teeth if only a little is needed.
  24. 38kg!! :D My boy Jack is a 30kg red heeler x with a fair dose of GSD and ridgey in there. He's big for a heeler and our vet said HE couldn't afford to gain any weight. If this lady is a good friend of your mum's, your mum should be able to tell her straight out that she's slowly killing her dog. If the vet tells her, too, and some other dog-loving friends, surely she'll get the message! I was just about to him 'reply' when I saw Poodlefan's response, and was going to suggest the same -- if she insists on feeding more, she should try bulking his food out with boiled pumpkin or grated carrot
