    Occy

Oh, poor wee Occy He fought so valiantly, but sometimes it all gets to be a bit much. Hugs to you and your family, j. Occy had a fantastic 7 years, that's for sure.
  2. Lovely! (Can someone please straighten the pictures on the wall for the Virgos among us? ) Bella looks tall for a four-year-old -- is she? Or maybe she just looks grown-up in her ballet gear. Has she been doing ballet for long? I lasted all of a week before asking the accompanist to teach me piano instead
  3. All will be fine, I'm sure. It's just one little accident. And I got a heck of a giggle from reading your subject line and thinking that you'd soiled your dogs' crate
  4. Whenever Jack has been a buckethead, we've left him at home in the yard as usual. But we don't have a lot of things for him to snag himself on, and he tended to do a bit of a dogdem cars move of bouncing off the hallway walls or door jambs when indoors so we figured he'd do the same outside. He was perfectly fine. We asked the neighbours to check on him every so often during the day, which they happily did. They said he would just snooze on his trampoline bed in the shade. Being an older gentleman, I suspect your chap would do the same?
  5. Likewise. I caught Jack last week with his front legs against one of the nashi trees, stretching to reach a just-ripened piece of fruit ... I reckon his mouth was open when I said "Jack ..." as he quickly hopped down and wandered off. He looked so sad as I picked the fruit, too. He won't touch banana, will do anything for a grape, and loves watermelon.
  6. Hi Queanbeyanite, and welcome to Quangers. We've been here for six years now. I think there are seven or eight off-lead areas in Queanbeyan, which I think is really quite good for what is essentially a small country town. The Hoover Rd one is really quite a big paddock, so I'm surprised your dogs get bored there. My main complaints with that site are the usual clueless dog owners who let their pack gallop over "just to say hi", and the lack of shade. The Scar is nice for a walk up the hill, and there is plenty to sniff. We also like Bicentennial Park, which comes (roughly) off Tharwa Rd not far from the Southbar Rd end. Jack loves to run down the slippery dip if there are no kids at the playground And, no, the Showgrounds are not officially an offlead area. The local dog obedience club used to train there and had to remind club members not to let their dogs offlead in the area. Which is a shame, as it's pretty well fenced and away from the road, not to mention rarely used! Until the Lake Ginninderra and Lake Tuggeranong dog parks opened in the ACT, the only options I knew of in all of Canberra for fenced off-lead areas were at the dog clubs. So we really have it pretty good! And certainly almost everyone in my street has a dog. Our dog always gets lots of pats and friendly comments when we walk to a cafe in town or walk through the park. My bug-bear with this area is the number of off-lead (ETA: roaming) dogs, but that seems to have dwindled a bit since we first moved here. That and the lack of a beach Edited again If your dogs like a bit of a bushwalk/mountain goat track, head for Molonglo Gorge off Sutton Rd just near Queanbeyan. There are a few spots along the up-and-down, rocky walk for the dogs to take a dip along the way. I wouldn't recommend it in the peak of summer because of the risk of snakes, but we've done the walk a few times in spring and summer. There is a carpark and picnic tables at the start of the walk, and it ends at an area called Blue Tiles Recreation Area, I think it's called. There is some information here. We have camped (with the dog) at the Kowen Forest Recreational Area, just for a bit of fun, and lots of people seem to drive there to take their dogs for an off-lead wander through the pine forest if that's your thing.
  7. We don't have a pet door, so can't comment on brands and so on. But my 10yo not-so-bright dog had no problems negotiating the pet door when staying with a Don't Fret Pet carer recently. If he can do it, any dog can
  8. Rest in peace, Clover, knowing that you are much loved and will always be missed.
  9. Happy birthday, Princess! He would look so dashing in the Mardi Gras parade the weekend after next
  10. Jack has had the alligator and octopus for years, and only managed to get a wee bit of the stitching loose on the black binding material. He usually destroys all stuffed toys, particularly those with squeakers, but these are too tough for him
  11. Around here, we call pats "kid pats", because it's what most kids seem to do after asking if they can pat Jack. He can't get enough of it He does the full-on bum-waggle of appreciation.
  12. And 'usually' does not mean 'always'. This dog would have weighed 60kg on a skinny day, and it came from behind and went straight for Jack's neck. I didn't get the chance to come between it and my dog.
  13. I'm very late coming in to this topic, but when my 30kg ACD x was attacked without warning by a big black Dane (presumably a cross, given it's massive brick-like head) I made a conscious decision not to kick the other dog. I didn't want to lose my leg. But in that situation, the owners had seen their dog run across the road and grab my dog by the neck. I swore profusely at the dog, owner and his son, one of whom started punching their dog in the head (I didn't give a toss if THEY got hurt), and the other kicking and punching it in the ribs. It just bit down harder and continued shaking Jack. Until the owner prised the dog's jaws open (!!!) while the son pulled their dog off mine by the hind legs. That dog is no longer with us. And I no longer walk my dog down their street. In fact, I haven't even walked my dog by myself since then, and this all happened before Christmas.

    Rocco

A wonderful tribute for the most gorgeous boofer. RIP Rocco. You've left a huge hole in my hearts.
  15. I didn't realise Toby was 14, either. Run free, wonderdog.
  16. I read some very interesting reviews of that show, KnucklesDutchnUs -- hope you liked it more than many reviewers did! It provided great inspiration for a pic
  17. She probably needed an extra-long nap after all that exercise Love the first pic!
  18. RIP Rocco, you gorgeous big man. to all who knew and loved him.
  19. A big thumbs up for the Rogz collar ... my dog was wearing his when he was attacked by a loose dog, and the toothmarks in that collar indicate that the collar saved Jack. The Rogz dog squeaky toy is also very popular in this household
  20. Cool, ta. My folks are a bit further north at Laurieton so we might just have to stop off on the way sometime
  21. What a lovely spot! Where did you go camping? The dragonfly pic just pops out at you. Gorgeous
  22. There are similar perils associated with living with Jack (a mutt with husky-like undercoat). Gorgeous shot, though!
  23. It brings a tear to my eye to see what he used to look like. The pain must have been appalling.
