Love the babies guys!! This is my new one - only four weeks at the moment. :D Show debut coming in October... Our older black boy (at the start of this thread) has had a great year with multiple classes in group and BOB wins over adults which is always a challenge in a slow maturing, gangly breed! But he's bored sitting at home now that we have pups!! Another week or two and we can get back out to some shows.

A trough would be perfect!!! Ours have a Bunnings panel run outside too. They love it! And I love that it can be moved every couple of days. No matter how fast I am on the pickups, there is a whole lot of poo... a constant supply!! As they pick one area for it, they are so quick to run through and jump in it while they're playing - just oblivious! The world is for fun, not for worrying about where you tread!! It's good to move the pen and give the used patch of grass a good wash down... :D

Love the Cavs Britt!! And Jetpoint! What a lovely picture of mum outside with her pups! Mine has to be penned in with hers or she's off - even penned in she has had enough of them after 15 minutes and is standing up trying to avoid them. Sigh. But all those little pointy teeth... Can't really say I blame her!! I thought I had a photo of her being submerged in the pile of pups... but can't find it. Here is the whole gang though: And even the biggest bowl is too small for them all - have to get the next bowls in there quick!!

Gorgeous Rebanne!! Love Wonderland. And Playground's dark face...
-
My mum just went today and afterwards sent me an sms saying "Make sure you get to see it - but take tissues!!"
-
I know! I can't get over their gorgeous little legs and bellies! They look so very huggable!!
-
OMG SBT and Yarrowfell your pups are gorgeous!!! Ours have been outside for the day today - we had 20 degree sunshine. I missed their first expedition damn work! But OH took photos and had a great time watching them play - and eat (which is their favourite pastime!)

Sharing 4th or 5th generation ancestors I would consider line breeding. 1st and second gen I would mostly think of as inbreeding. Third is getting into a grey area, depends on subtleties like whether the same dog/bitch is involved or litter mates etc. Only my opinion. I think it's probably one of the reasons why it's considered safer these days to simply give a dog (or pedigree) a COI percentage and let people judge for themselves. edit - spelling... it's getting late sorry!
-
Awww Allerzeit!! Soo cute!! Hope you get some sleep soon - it makes for a long first two weeks. I was late to work today - just couldn't tear myself out of the puppy pen - they're all trying to climb in my lap and give me kisses at once. It's crazy how much work they are - lucky they're so worth it!!
-
Would be nice to just keep as many as we loved wouldn't it Jetpoint?? They are so good at working their way into your heart. Ours are hilarious with their playing - they have the whole family in hysterics. And I still haven't found the video camera!!
-
"Don't look at them! Don't look at the fat LOSERS!!"

My first dog, apart from family dogs when I was a kid/teenager, was an Afghan. I wanted a Borzoi but couldn't find the temperament and type I wanted - we were expecting a baby and very fussy with temperament. He was a fantastic Afghan... :D But Affies aren't challenging at all are they???

Sounds good SBT - hopefully you'll be through the worst zombie stage soon. We had a mild temp, a very slight odour from the back end when she got mastitis so I think a little gunk from the last placenta too. Ab's cleared it up very quickly - but watch for tummy upsets in pups. Mine didn't respond to protexin until after the ABs were stopped - but Impact helped them a whole lot.
-
Thanks guys. Heidley I'm so pleased to hear he is doing well. He'll be a contented pup indeed with the whole milkbar to himself!
-
They've got the serious faces down pat already!! I love that they come when I call them now - in a big swarm - and climb into my lap for cuddles. :D

Jetpoint your girl sounds like she's a bit more attentive than mine. She really doesn't clean up poo at all - they are doing quite well at using one end of the playpen which is promising for housetraining! Sonya is almost officially over it. She has to be shut in the playpen with the pups and is fond of standing up so they can't reach her milk and giving me the sad - "I want to get out" eyes. But she still has vast amounts of milk so just has to deal with it - if i took them off her no doubt we'd have another bout of mastitis. She escaped the pen last night when I (half alseep) didn't clip it shut properly. She got into the laundry, ate all the cat food and two days worth of thawing chicken mince (nearly 4kg...) all over the floor, then promptly climbed on the couch and went to sleep. So i woke up to one contented mum, a horde of hungry pups and a LOVELY mess in the laundry. All conspired to make me vey late in dropping off kids and getting to work. Not happy. I have no doubt she's she's snoozing in the sunshine feeling very pleased with herself. And I'll be struggling to thaw more mince for the others - seeing as she's eaten all theirs... Will have to go buy some fresh stuff. We have some very cute photos from yesterday though. Here's two of our boys :

It was never said that they were companion dogs. Hunt kennels are likely to have that many dogs - just as an example of thinking outside the square. Some pack dogs - working strains of foxhounds and beagles in particular spring to mind - are happier living in big packs than in homes - they are pack dogs not family dogs. Conclusions cannot be drawn from one second hand piece of information. So is it an exaggeration to say you have 84 dogs? Yes it is. No it's not. Or maybe both or either. It's a big wide world and lot's of people live very different lifestyles.

Well Thank You Very Much You Thieving ****

A whole pen?? That is really bad form indeed. I had someone recently steal a crummy old occy-strap I use to wrap my floor mat up with, and that was just really sad and pathetic. But to steal someone's pen?? No words. -
Oh Heidley I'm so sorry. Has she finished? I hope you can get some rest. What an ordinary experience. I hope your little one is strong. SBT - About time!! Go Cynda.
-
Congrats Missymoo!! :champagne: If Cynda doesn't get her act together you might have the last July babes!! Zzz top your pups are lovely! Is it the roan boy that's not gaining so fast as the others? I hope you're getting some rest with bottle feeding, it's such an intesnive thing to do. Allerzeit as far as I'm aware the new vaccine policy is based around immunity being developed within a much shorter time frame after the shot than the previous two week window - 24-48 hours maybe? I'm planning on doing them at 7 weeks, then again at 11 as I have a pup going overseas and he needs to enter his new home country right on 12 weeks to fit in with rabies shots. Phew. You and your OH sound like us - doing shifts on puppy watch!! The lack of sleep catches up with you very quickly but it's worth it. We had only one pup rolled on, and if I hadn't been standing right next to the box at the time we would've lost him. Once was enough!! With such heavy mums it can happen so fast. Marinapoint your brood looks beautiful!! Hopefully it will all be smooth sailing from here. Underfoot I hear you on the poo... Mine are eating several meals a day - milk replacer with mince. Poo factories. At least I know they're all getting plenty I suppose!!

Normally very good. Many ex racers are well used to lots of travel. The fosters I've had have always loved going in the car and sleep happily. And, as I helped derail this thread a little... I thought I'd answer the original question. :D I met a Borzoi when I was 10 - out the front of my school. He ever so gently stood up on my shoulders, looked down into my face and then hopped down and walked off gracefully with his lady owner. I was hooked. Spent my childhood and teenage years searching out pictures and information in every dog book I could find.
-
Phew Marinapoint you guys had a bit of a rough time! I'm glad Mum and bubs are doing well now. Sorry for the little ones you lost - always sad. Fingers crossed for lots of smooth whelping vibes overnight!! May your pups arrive safely and your coffee cups stay warm.
-
Oooo Missymoo!! Sounds exciting!! Nothing worse though than sitting up watching them all night and in the morning they just go to sleep... :D And you don't want to sleep in case something starts... They are amazing aren't they Allerzeit?? And you can only spot 10 out of the 12 in that pic!! The little girls will sit at mum's head for ages giving her kisses. The boys are much less smoochy with her.

Hendra needs to develop via a horse so don't panic about droppings etc. But Lyssavirus is a worry and I would be concerned about it if any of my dogs got bitten or scratched. The thing with Lyssa is that it affects bats, and one of the main symptoms is paralysis. So affected bats are more likely to be grounded and therefore come into contact with dogs. The vaccine for Lyssavirus is the rabies vaccine (which consist of three shots for humans - I have had it ;) ) but not sure for dogs. You can order rabies vaccine through your vet if you have genuine concerns about Lyssavirus in your area. Or have a chat to them about it. The treatment for a bite or scratch is serum injected into the wound - painful. And a course of serum injections. The course of treatment provides immunity like the vaccine. Don't get bitten or scratched. The virus is rare but serious so not worth taking chances. If you refrigerate a dead bat don't obviously put it near your foodstuffs, and you will probably be asked to pay for any testing unless it's related to a human injury. Can be costly.

Greyhound rescues do sometimes have pups. ;)
