“is It Time To Introduce A Spitz Group In Australia?”.
Alyosha replied to Bjelkier's topic in General Dog Discussion
I voted no but purely on numbers. I'd love to see the Spitz together instead of scattered like they are. And I'd love to have a Sighthound group instead of the scent/sight mix we have. But Australia just doesn't have the numbers to justify those changes. Our groups are small enough sometimes as it is! And edit to add I'm still LMAO at Kinsella's Rocky and Bullwinkle reference!! -
They're not. But they are partial ancestors of Rough Collies, therefore Shelties. Silken Windhounds are on the list and have Borzoi backgrounds, but they also have Sheltie in their background. So it's possible it would show up in Borzoi. I don't use Ivermectin because of the suspicion - not worth it!!

I'd love to not choose until 8 weeks too underfoot, but with twelve of them it's nice to have some homes confirmed so they can head off at 8-9 weeks. Also our overseas boy had to be picked early to get his vetwork done and fit with rabies vacc etc. Sigh. I have some friends who have done the Pat Hastings lectures and they were hoping to practice on my guys which would be interesting.

:( http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/national/child-killed-in-dog-attack-at-st-albans/story-e6frea8c-1226117002241 A THREE-year-old girl has been killed in a dog attack in a Melbourne suburb tonight. Ambulance officers worked on the girl at the scene but were unable to revive her. It is believed she and another child, aged 5, were attacked in Lahy Street, St Albans just after 8pm. Police said the dog, which resembled a pit bull terrier, then went into a property and mauled a woman in her 20s. The child and woman have been taken to Sunshine Hospital. The dog is believed to have been from a neighbouring property. A council ranger is travelling to the scene. More to come ... With AAP

Awwww!! You guys!! All your pups are gorgeous!!! Wouldn't it be nice if we could decide on our keepers when they were a bit bigger GSP? It's a bit nervewracking!

Mine get a bit hormonal and quiet too

The muzzles are a legal requirement as historically they have been trained to chase. There are cals for review to the muzzle laws generally as they are fairly well out of date now.

Help Needed: Looking For Mini Dachshund Pup Breeders
Alyosha replied to dant's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hey Anthony. Good luck with finding your pup! One breeder with two dapples, and one with one, both in NSW and on this page: mini dachie pups NSW Sorry - edit to add that these are silver dapples, but the breeders may have plans for others or know of other dapple breeders. -
Nodding...

Wasn't there a rather infamous bill from Clover Moore about banning pet shop sales? And yet again, there was sneaky undertones which classed every premises that bred dogs as a commerical premises thus subjecting home breeders to ridiculous legal requirements. Again, just like Oscars Law, what seems a good idea on face value is surrounded up by ridiculous other agendas. Yes. Banning the sale of animals in pet shops may be a great idea. But I see this re-occurring trend to include extremist animal rights agendas with any sensible ideas.

Is it remotely normal for a pitbull to weigh over 55kg???

Most sighthounds have unpredictable recall. That's what leads are for. ;) Unless there are fences, they don't come off them!!

Would be a rare saluki indeed that would relish the company of a more boisterous working breed. You're right though, they are lovely. Our last foster grey drove all our borzoi nuts - far too energetic for them! If she wasn't busy, busy around the yard she was standing at the back door with a toy in her mouth and tail wagging waiting for anyone to come play fetch. It can come down to individuals within a breed just as much as different breed types sometimes!!
-
Yep. Go the Greyhound. :D Fantastic dogs, the ones we've fostered have always got along with other dogs famously. Some are more into games than others (ie. not all are couch potatos!!) I love them. They are amazingly easy and pleasant to live with.

Thanks Steve. Yes Toydog - edit for spelling - I'm having a shocker today!!

Good breeders would never supportthose that aren't reputable - don't you see it is exactly the same? Yet people are happy to campaign for things like Oscar's Law that lumps all breeders in with the bad, and penalises the good rather than teh bad. If the same thing was done on a National scale to rescue groups - if they were all tarred with the brush of the worst and new laws brought in treating them that way would it actually benefit the dogs? No. What I've been trying to say is that these campaigns - like Oscar's Law - will only affect those people hat care enough to comply. Ie - the already responsible. Use the comparison, how many unregistered /unchipped dogs and cats are impounded every day? Yet it's the law. Oh but all the responsible people ensure their dogs are all done. The irresponsible? They don't, and won't. The care factor is not there. You cann't regulate people into caring, or valuing animals more than they do. Educate maybe, but that's another story. Rules don't educate people. efs - again!

I am in the process of homing an entire litter, and have had no complaints from puppy buyers that have contacted me, from all over the country and overseas. Sorry to sound like a snob, but I'm not seeking generalised "puppy buyers" but buyers seeking my particular breed. And lo and behold, if you type in "a particular breed puppy for sale" you get - first hit - Dogzonline breeder puppy advertisments, some linked to breeders own websites and all full of breeder contact details. You also get links to breed clubs contacts and websites with all sorts of info. There are a good deal of people out there are not flush with time or energy to go chasing down the general (and generally opinionated and unwilling) public and ramming our own ideals down their throats. There is a bigger abundance than ever of available information in this world. People who want to find stuff out can do so easier than ever. I have never said anything about my rights being disrupted, or anything about dogs being euthanased, but I have spoken out about people working blindly and obssessively to bring in laws and regulations that will create unenforceable conditions - that only law abiding folk will ever adhere to. How will that help pound dogs? Or any dogs? I'm yet to see any discussion on that at all yet - just the usual roundabout of who helps with rescue the most and how others just don't give a hoot about all the terrible stuff. The guilt trips again, but nothing functional or useful. Yet again this degenerates into attacks on breeders for not saving the entire dog world. efs

Ah for a perfect world. It's never going to happen with things like Oscar's law, which - like I said so many pages ago and only one person acknowledged (thanks Jaybeece) it's the sneaky stuff that gets pushed in with these laws that is actively divisive of the entire dog community. For example - banning the online advertising / sale of dogs. This will have reputable registered breeders backs up immediately, as they are being lumped in with disreputable puppy farmers simply by choice of media. Divide and conquer. This is what the anti-companion animals nutters will do to the dog loving community, by fostering widespread feelings of guilt, shame and pity in all dog owners, whether breeders or not.

Look up the AQIS website which will give you an idea of any quarantine issues. As far as I know though there is no quarantine between Aust and NZ when a puppy comes here, so wouldn't imagine there'd be any going the other way. So transport costs and purchase price. Transport price is worked out by weight, so larger dogs are obviously more expensive. Airline approved crate has to be factored in as well. There would no doubt be some vet work involved, health checks, vaccination certificates etc.

Need Info On Why Not To Randomly Stud Out A Dog.
Alyosha replied to mr.mister's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Poodlefan, Is there some place I can go to find this legislation? I would like to be able to quote it. Thanks You'd be best looking at Civil law and not Criminal. If you were looking for good quotes some case law references never go astray - case law databases can be very useful -
Breeds - Hd And Ed Scoring Requirements
Alyosha replied to Stolzseinrotts's topic in Breeders Community
I agree totally testing should be tailored to particular breeds, their issues and requirements. Otherwise I think we run the risk of jumping on the testing bandwagon because it gives us either a warm fuzzy feeling or makes us feel superior to those who don't, instead of providing any real life benefit to our breeds. -
I know. It's a straaaange mix indeed. But I suppose when it's done without care or thought... ;)
