  1. So many people dont realise that and bring them in in ignorance. One of the things that has annoyed me about the whole thing has been the lack of publicity over the new laws (or even the old ones) and people will still be un aware that they cant bring them into Tas. Since now if you do its instant euth for the turtle and big fines I do feel a bit sorry for those moving here and taking their pet with them. Which is how a few get here. No sympathy for those who know its illegal and try their luck anyway. Thats just not fair on the animals if they are caught
  2. persephone, There are none native here and over the years people have smuggled them in. Sadly, over time some have escaped and have recently been found to be breeding. They are carnivores and can carry disease, so to protect the native fish and invertebrates they are getting them all out and will try to cull any found wild as well. As much as I loved having him as a pet it is the right thing to do.
  3. I have been fostering a turtle for the last couple of years. He was brought into Tas illegally (they are not native here) and was seized by quarentine and I have been looking after the garbage guts ever since. Sadly there have been new laws brought in and they are removing all turtles from Tas, even the ones on permits. Kirty from Dol was going to take him but there was so much mucking around and dealing with people who were no help at all and time ran out. A reptile association here is gathering them up and will be flying them free of charge to Vic where they will be placed with other herpers. So yesterday I dropped Gamera off at the house of the guy who is organising the flight. Here are a couple of photos of my little guy. He has his name written on him in the hope they can keep track of him for me so I can find out how he is doing. Little dude was a bit shy upon meeting his fellow detainees. Thats his butt sticking out of the rocks Other detainees I am very privileged to have been looking after him for the last few years. I hope things work out for him in his new life I will miss my little man.
  4. I think Wylie has cheeky fox eyes. While Lokis are more softer and look slightly worried sometimes... Sorry, I have no close ups...
  5. I told the petshop in town recently that their sign was wrong and there really was no such thing as a "silkalier" . They ignored me, funny that.
  6. I dont think I have ever seen so many babies with one wolf spider! Wow. I get to feed and water the spiders at work when we have them on display. I can put "spider wrangler" on my resume
  7. Boxhead (Wylie)as a puppy and a few years later. Loki's puppy photos need to be scanned in, so some other time.
  8. I noticed today Loki has dry mildly flaky skin on his belly and in his ears! This is a recent thing. Any ideas what can help? He also has two bald patches on each ear that have appeared. They are in the same place on each ear down the bottom along the rim. More like a thin bald line rather than a patch. Its the same size(about 1 cm long) on each ear. Its soft, smooth skin, no signs of irritation or flakyness. Doesn't look fly bitten either. He isn't scratching it at all. I haven't taken a photo yet but I drew a line on an old photo. Thats where it is on both ears.
  9. Mine had cats around as puppies and ignore them. If they see a cat out on the footpath they will try and chase it but get scared if the cat stands its ground. Other critters... depends. Wouldn't trust them with smaller prey animals. Mine kill birds (and chooks ) and rodents. I had a rabbit in a hutch and they ignored it but I would guess running free it would be a whole different story. Thats Wylies motto! Lokis would be "ok, have it, I cant be bothered"
  10. Dont be fooled, twas all an act! Yeah, I love the little buggers but they can be a pain sometimes. The screaming yodel of welcome can be a bit scary as well . Training them is easy! They learn quickly. They then learn just as quickly how to get around everything you ask. Sit, stay, drop not a problem if you have a treat. No treat, no listening to owner. The high energy level cant be worse than some other breeds. Loki is very placid and quiet(I think he missed that chapter in the breed book ) Fun website that doesn't gloss over the bad points is the one below http://shibainus.ca/tms-in-a-nutshell-or-b...-from-the-past/
  11. Depends on the dog. I was prepared for a high energy twisted manipulative monster when I got Loki and he is really laid back and placid. He is a little old man in a fur coat. Wylie on the other hand....... Never liked the black ones at first. Its harder to find a really nice one but over the years they are growing on me. In fact, the next one is going to be a little black girl!
  12. Wylie will not stay, or stay or stay! So no skip, your friends dog is weird ;)
  13. Did some one say shiba? ;) belgian.blue, you waaaaant one! you really want one!
  14. Brilliant. Then been possibly put down for being a dangerous dog. Nice going Rex.... Ever stopped to think that if your big tough attack dog actually did bite someone then its good bye dog? Before you add your comments about how he is "trained" and "if its on your property, its not the dogs fault if it attacks" Take a long hard look at some of the recent dog stories in the news. If some small child wanders near your dog or sticks its hands through a fence to reach your dog and it "defends its territory" I doubt people will say "oh leave the dog be, tis defending its territory" Odds on your dog would be destroyed. thank you Mr Burns. "Smithers, release the hounds!"
  15. This Spitzy calendar needs Shiba! If only I could get a good photo of them. Loki doesn't move and Wylie moves too much... Plus I take crap photos. Wonder if I could convince Luke W to come down here and take some cool photos? I'm sure there is a clause some where in the singles thread that says he has too, free of charge? Surely!
  16. Swoon, swoon... I love him! and your photos...... I love him!!!!!!!
  17. Wow. Disorder, I had no idea you look so funky! (maybe I spend too much time loking at Snot. ;) )
  18. Wow... I dont have any of me annd the dogs either. I found 1, taken on a phone years ago. Wylie looks so young! (he is on the left) Little wrigglers
  19. I am renting and have no yard to bury them. Most is concrete. So both were cremated. I dont know if I will ever get around to spreading ashes. Because if I ever have a solid home it wont be theirs.
  20. It was a terrible year last year for me. I lost both my cats within a few months. Polly, aka poggy, poggybop. bitch kitty, lots of swearwords.... I got her from the RSPCA in 2000. She was a runty kitten who was weaned too early, poorly socialised. She was aggressive and dominating, but would melt around men.... the little tart!. She was difficult and painful but the smartest cat I have ever met. I often wondered what she would be like if she had a good upbringing? Poor pog was my little lady. Every hair in place, delicate and QUICK. I have never had a cat strike as fast as her. But she mellowed out and realised she was actually a cat when I got Ichabod.... Mr Bod. My little man. He was a burmilla with serious hair growth. He was also a runt and was weaned two weeks after his littermates. No reason, he just liked an easy meal.... Icky was named correctly. Shortly after I got him in 2003 he had a runny bottom, nose and a gunky eye. Hence the name Icky. He was such a loving little mite. He loved Polly no matter how much she hated him and beat him up. He taught her that she was a cat and so saved me from shin mutilation. He was not the brightest cat. I wont say he was dumb. I prefer innocent. Ichabod lived in a happy shiny world. His grooming skills, were, um, missing. He looked like a haystack, no matter how hard you brushed him. Polly died suddenly after a vet misdiagnosed a breathing problem. Her little lungs just gave up. It was sudden and unexpected. Ichabod had a life of ills with feline herpes and associated problems. He just couldnt handle being alone after Polly died. He faded away and I had to have him put to sleep. It still breaks my heart today. My poor stinky little man. R.I.P. My little ones. Excuse bad photography and what not... Ick as a wee kitten. Icky as a young spunky adolecent. Look at those eyes! Mr Bod. Aka Bodzilla, count Bodula and just plain Ickybaboo Icky and his big "sister" Polly Polly Bag puss I miss me little buddies. I have Penny now, but she is her own personality and cant replace them. R.I.P. Polly and Ichabod.
  21. I have been reading about do male dogs stink more, do they normally pee on themselves, do puppies feet REALLY smell like popcorn(you know who you are!) So, I apologise if this has been done to death but..... THE GREAT MALE Vs FEMALE debate continues.. Does he smell cause, well, he is a boy! Will she dice your self esteem into little patties cause she is a girl? Come on! Pour stuff on your typical male/female! It is fun! (yes, he pees on everything, yes she is smarter than my partner.... ect!)
  22. Is his burn all thickened and lumpy? I thought boxheads (sorry, wylie)would be cause it was pretty bad but it healed so well. No roughness at all. I bought him for show but after his injury I figured he was never going to do well. It was tiny but he would have been my first show and I never knew what the rules say about it. I thought show dogs had to be perfect. But he is still my boy, and you really have to go looking for his scar. He kept wagging his tail over his burn! eeeerrr! Shibas have that spikey spitz hair and he kept wagging it over his raw wound without any trace of pain... That was the worst. No brain no pain? ugh!
  23. I hope it heals ok! It might just look far worse than it appears. A few years ago Wylie got burnt across his lower back just above his tail. It started as a little red mark then with a few days became this massive wound. His skin was black and hard! It was so horrible. The vet said it was full thickness burns from boiling water and you could see where it had trickled down the sides of his back and tail. He said it looked deliberate but I couldnt imagine who would do such a thing! Although a day or two before I found it, the neighbour said he had been barking at something that night. She looked out side but she didnt see anyone. She knows they only bark if someone they dont know is there(or a cat...) I do have an outside hot water cylinder and I got it checked just in case. Anyway, The vet told me it was going to leave a huge scar and it would always be noticable. When it healed it went from the size of my outstretched hand to a tiny little bald spot about an inch or two long and you cant even see it, Thanks to that curly tail! I never thought such a horrible burn would leave such a tiny scar. Hope Beaus disappears just as well! What extra surgery can help? Wont more just leave more scars? I dont know enough about burns...
  24. Sleepy lizard? you mean a shingleback? Sorry, lizards are as much fun as the rest of my pets.... A big shingle back would hold its own against your dog. Until she calls its bluff... Kirty, do I see british shorthairs in your photo thing? (not up with the tech name for the photo at the bottom of your post) or exotics? I have my first british blob, sorry, blue and really want to find some people to talk to about her! She is a grizzly little force of nature!
  25. I took both of my Shibas to the course the guide dogs run here in Launceston. I know Shibas can potentially be dominant so socialisation was always on the cards from day one. Loki, my first is a submissive quiet boy (Ok! he is a mummys boy, and proud of it!) He was totally un intersted in the other dogs. Would just sit and sigh and look the other way whenever another dog came up to say hello. The lady running the course kept using him as an example of "the more aloof breeds" yeah, thanks . A few years later I took Wylie to the same course. Little beast has attidude issues, ie- he is god. (normal shiba) I spent the first few weeks sqirting him with a water bottle cause he didnt stop barking and trying to push around the wimpy pups. These courses just run through the basics. But they do seperate the class into two age groups rather than size. Puppy and adult. Which means you get all breeds and sizes running with each other but more in keeping with their development. Wylie didnt learn any manners till I started walking him to the off leash area and he tried to bully two young labs who thought the funny little barking thing was great fun and tried to roll him into little balls. No aggression from them at all, but he sure learnt he wasn't god and other dogs might just be bigger than him! It was the best thing for him. Now days I just have to watch him around the little girl dogs.....
