  1. Yay charlie! I follow the Charlie threads but never have anything to add.
  2. Well, no, they are not. But have been here long enough to form its own unique "breed" that sets it apart from other asian "dingos" (meaning they look similar but you can usually tell where it has come from) This leaves us with a dilema. Preserve a non native? Or preserve a distinct breed of dog that has been here long enough to fill the niche of our missing large land based carnivores. Australia has this problem in a few areas. We have the only wild dromedaries in the world, We have a stable population of Bali banteng, which like the dingo is a primative "domestic" breed yet is endangered in it's home country. Where do we draw the line? They say our sparrows are genetically changing from their european ancestors. Will we one day treat them as a new native species?
  3. I dont understand this attitude at all. I have a entire male shiba. I knew before I got him they can be dog aggressive so I take steps. I never let him off lead in public and even whilst walking I keep firm control over him. If I didn't he would be lunging and snapping at other dogs (he would like to, has a god complex) When he was attacked by an off lead dog a while back he was extra responsive and I have been teaching him to sit when he sees another dog and focus on me. So far its working beautifully. So, owner of a small potentialy agressive dog here and he has never attacked anyones dog. How hard can it be? I mean, I'm an idiot at the best of times but really? Sadly people are stupid and common sense is actually far from being common. It would be annoying for large dog owners to face constant prejudice about their dogs, purely on size. (plus those owners with bull breeds) so I do feel for you.
  4. Most of the starling nests in my street are lined with shiba hair
  5. It is 11 right? Looks old and greying but still shiba to me. Bad photo though.
  6. In all fairness, a sesame coloured shiba can look kinda coyote like. They are kind of wild looking dogs. ( I did name Wylie after Wylie Coyote ) But the size and tail would be a dead give away! You would have to be pretty clueless to mix them up...
  7. Hey! Welcome back Jed. I didnt have much to add to any of the posts about you because so many others said it all so much better than I could. I'm guessing the same will happen in here too... Wishing you all the best!
  8. Me? I saw my first shiba on TV when I was 14 and was hooked. They are just so gorgeous and wild looking! Spent years waiting till I could get a dog and now have 2. There are a whole heap of breeds I would have one day if circumstances allow but there will be a shiba tucked in there somewhere. I submit exhibit A. Loki was stretching. As if a shiba would bow to anyone! pfft!
  9. I must say, the answers are terrific. It is too easy for people who are very passionate about things to go off on a rant and in some ways do far more damage in the long run but these replies are intelligent and informative.
  10. Or not.... Wylie bounced out out of his crate and never looked back. But he is a brat. I promise there will be times when you call him lots of things that dont sound very Japanese, or polite in public.....Be warned, you try to do the right thing, you research, you learn and then just when you think its all going well.... you get another shiba!
  11. Thats a gorgeous smile Winnie has there, Jata!
  12. I have a worse problem. I will wake up in the morning busting to go but dont want to leave my nice warm bed. Without fail Penny jumps up on me and lands on my bladder. EVERY TIME!!!!
  13. Thats it! I kept thinking about the myth with picking a guinea pig up by it's tail makes it's eyes fall out...
  14. I think this is a great thread! Very entertaining and interesting. I dont have any to add though. Isn't there something about pugs and their eyes popping out? What about poodles bred in France?
  15. My nest to next door neighbour has a dobe who is either 12 or 13 this year, I forgot which. She has just got a touch of arthritis in the last year or so but otherwise happy and healthy.
  16. I am crap at this but I'm going to say Rottie in there.
  17. A friend of mine has a dog who was bought from a petshop.(dont go there..) and sold as a pure bred cattle dog. Obviously she isn't She has short legs and a long body. Stands around 40 cms tall at the shoulder? maybe shorter? Obviously my friend loves her anyway but I'm curious to see what the experts think she is crossed with. Sorry I dont have any of her standing to the side. Any way, here she is. Very busy little girl
  18. If I was a thief, I certainly wouldn't be sticking my face through a dog door. What if the critter was on the other side waiting? Nice way to get a bite to the face
