  1. I wonder if we'd develop the urge to toilet outside? I wonder if we would pick up after ourselves?????
  2. That's not what I meant by 'bits' I am thinking more of reproductive organs/gristly bits of feet/..... oh all those bits and peices go into making lots of other things but plenty of it gets ground down for animal by products. actually one of the nicest parts of a pig when cooking a head is the cheeks(ooohhh hannibal lector!!!!)
  3. Unless you buy meat from a home kill which I do know of some dog food manufacturers that do, if the meat purchased is off cuts and offal from a meat works then it has been inspected. If you saw the meat that went to Mconalds and the like then it would probably put a few people off buying mackas
  4. Given that the dog rolls are cooked in the plastic wrapping, and if not cooked properly can be very nasty if consumed, I always check to make sure the rolls havent blown up. I have no intention of sampling the dog roll I feed but my dogs love it.
  5. Ditto. Can't remember the brand. Biscuits shaped like bones and they came in different colours. Brown (chocolate) Pink (strawberry) Cream (vanilla) Green (ummm ?) Of course they were always disappointing to the taste buds Given they are often marketed as very healthy for the dogs you'd think we should be able to cook it up and eat it ourselves. Well we are still here so it cant of been too bad for us
  6. I work in a meat works and believe me, humans waste very very little of the offal and meat in a bovine. In fact it you would be very surprised what gets consumed. I know of a few people who eat the heart, liver, kidneys. In fact I am sure lots of people do.
  7. We used to eat dog biscuits as kids(Tux...a kiwi dog food) Yes mum and dad fed us human food. I know of people who know of people who when after a night on the town would come home, and have luncheon slices in sandwiches, but come morning it was revealed that it wasnt human food that they were eating Or there would be a big pot of mince cooking but it wasnt human food. They had a great feed though. My guess is that it is all to do with the crap and preservatives in some of it.
  8. Gah! No, people don't define the punishment; the dog does. Does he avoid doing things that get punished? Then it's a punishment no matter how you want to dress it. It's the very first rule in the list that is being discussed. And the second. Dogs ain't kids to be patiently told why one behaviour is preferable over another. They can only learn through trial and error. Frustration in itself is not necessarily a punishment to a dog. What I meant corvus is that how do people punish their dogs, what method do they use. Your punishment, my method of correction and anyone elses methods are completely different. I totally oppose many farmers methods of disciplining their dogs in training for work yet I have used a training collar when absolutely necessary on my kelpie. I have a dog aggressive dog whom I do show and he is a wonderful example of the breed yet when he has his cranky pants on I let him know with my voice and my hand on his neck that I will not put up with his behaviour. When he is behaving he also gets food reward to distract him which does work and praise. I have seen many many working dogs totally cowering at their owners, to the extent that you can see what method of training has been used and it is very wrong. I have seen show dogs and obedience dogs cowering at their owners which makes me wonder what methods they use. at the end of the day a dog is a dog is a dog. Yes they learn through trial and error but only because we want them to learn. If we make it enjoyable with reward and correction when necessary they of course will learn. Humans only get frustrated when the dog is not doing what we want them to do. In bringing up dogs and children there are in fact many similarities. Routine, necessary correction, socialisation when they are young. Children learn to play and share and are taught what we want them to learn. Puppies are exactly the same. Obviously there are differences but I know what I mean. Others may not.
  9. ...and that they aren't reacting out of emotion. I've seen too many people use punishment out of frustration, without having thought it through. I've seen people mis-use/mis-time reinforcements as an expression of their emotional state too, and that's also bad training, but it's not as hard on the dog. I acknowledge positive punishment has its place in training but I am very careful of it as a tool both because of it's potential to damage and because I think it calls to the worst part of our natures. As a species we love to punish and blame even when it's counter to our long term aspirations, and many people will escalate punishment even when it's clearly not working. Good posts. All I have wanted to say but just havent had a chance. But I have read every post. I hate the word punishment. That is for someone who has broken the law. A dog is only being taught what we want it to learn. Effective correction is what I try to enforce. After all I am trying to teach them what I want. Perhaps people should define what their punishment is
  10. Sorry but those rules dont make sense to me at all. But I guess I am old school. I dont think of it as punishment nor do I call it punishment. I think of it as enforcing an action on an animal in a humane way. I hope the author doesnt use this punishment on their children.
  11. OK If you are scared of big dogs, then just dont go there. Dont run from DOL though Looking at the weather radar the storms down there look real bad. Keep safe.
  12. Megan if you feel the dogs health is being compromised and you feel safe in handling the dog, and if the owners are still not home then put a lead on the dog and put him in a safe place. Deal with the owners later.
  13. Unfortunately at the moment Megan that is all you can probably do. I hate seeing dogs out in the weather. Be careful though. If they are not home and the weather turns real nasty the dog may be scared of not only the weather but someone who tries to come to its aid. I will probably get crap for what I have posted but at least I knew I cared. Thanks for caring Megan.
  14. Megan sadly I knew of people who had their dogs out in storms. Tied to trees. Registered breeders. I cracked a fit and went around to their place(they werent home but were away working with my husband at the time, other people were looking after their dogs). It wasnt the first time this had happened. I phoned my hubby to say that I was going around there.(Huge storm) He was in total agreement. I TOLD the people home to get off their arse and get the dogs dry and in the dog trailer where at least they had shelter. I took around towels and made them do this. What did I get for the trouble? Told I was interferring in their business. Hubby went off at the breeder big time. I got shit but the dogs got a dry bed for the night. Gutted...yep you bet I was. But I still cared about the animals.
  15. uummm could be just a wart or an ingrowing hair folicle that has got a bit infected. or not........
  16. Yes fully agree with this. Do not even go there with vaccinations until she is fully recovered. Good luck
  17. If the milk appears dark and bloody after you have expressed some she may of just had a small burst blood vessel. Shouldnt be too much of a worry unless it gets worse. For years and years we have brought our pups up on farex as their first lapping solids. Mince on the finger is fine but sometimes it can get stuck to the roof of their mouths. Make sure it is moistened. Just be careful about milk or solids going down the wrong way in the bubbas. Just try one bub at a time We always use the first solids as a top up after mothers milk. So everyone has different ideas but go with what suits you best
  18. Yes the leather is rounded and then stitiched together. If you have a samoyed then I would recommend that the collar you get is not dyed in any way but left its natural colour. Including the stitiching. There is no leather product out there in which the dye will not leech. If you dont mind having a samoyed with a coloured neck then go for a dyed one.
  19. wonderful there is a BBulldog thread as well in the breed sub forum and in the dog breeds 101 so have a looky and join us. any questions just ask away. some of us have owned bulldogs for a long time and have a wealth of knowledge.
  20. Lovely pikkies of the bubba. Tell us more about Suki please Love the markings
  21. I don't see 'nothing' in his eyes. I see hope. That's the part of dogs that amazes me. I think 'hope' is the very last thing they let go of. This is from a 'coffee table' book I've recently purchased : "A dog's demonstrative behaviour, far from indicating any inability to reason, is a measure of their enormous compassion, optimism, hope and a capacity for forgiveness that should leave us all withered with shame." I say "amen" to that, for it is so true. The book is "Why Dogs are Better than Cats" .... . The author is Bradley Trevor Greive and the book contains lovely photographs by Rachael Hale. I hope this little guy makes it and lives long enough to know the comfort, care and humanity that humans are capable of. I agree with the poster who suggested that perhaps the pup has been lost. I hope so. I feel ashamed at what insidious things some people can and will do to animals and we've heard so much about these things of late I am very concerned inhumanity is on the increase rather than the opposite. I do agree with what you are saying Erny. And I hope that he is a victim of a lost dog instead of one whom has been neglected. But to be very honest I dont think that is the case. I think he has been seriously neglected. How can one who does this call themselves human. How can one whom breathes in this world do such neglect to an animal who has done no one any harm. I see eyes of hope. Forgiving eyes whom bear no grudge because all they want is love and affection. They dont know what they have done yet they endure what we humans do(correction..they endure what the scumbags dish out to them)
  22. People who do that absolutely disgust me Totally disgust me. Makes me so f&^$^&* angry Big hugs to the beautiful bubba
  23. Hell no I didnt compete in any obedience classes. I was only 11 or 12 at the time. I trained Carlos myself(the big goof ball he was). He could heel on lead, off lead, sit, down, stay, retrieve. Didnt like the dumbell though. Climb obstacles. I then taught him hand comands. He was a bloody intelligent dog. We would walk to the shops. A good few kms return trip. He would hold the paper all the way back. I could even give him my bag of lollies LOL to hold and apart from the bag being wet he wouldnt even attempt to munch them. Didnt trial him though. Gosh that was a long time ago. Brings back lots of memories. Have never obedience trained any other dog. It was a one off with him but I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I was very young.
  24. Great photos Hubby videoed the Qld Amstaff specialty and I took some photos. Havent got around to putting them on disc for friends yet, but it will happen. One day
