  1. I guess when it comes down to brass tacks elfin, people will use whatever is on the market. no substance should be used which is going to alter a coat texture but people do use these products because they are produced. Just my own personal opinion but i wish judges had more balls to send a dog out of the ring when it is known that they have drenched the dogs coat in chalk or potato flour, or a liquid substance. Just as I hate hairspray being used on poodles etc. What breed have you got? Does the dog really need something to alter the coat texture.
  2. Exhibitors should not be using chalk to alter the coat texture. Yes I have used it on Bulldogs to white some stains on legs that a bath hasnt removed but never ever for coat texture. I know of many dogs whom are literally coated in chalk powder. Big no no.
  3. Many dogs dont chew their food N And soaking the biscuits doesnt reduce them to slop Depends on how much water you use and how long they are soaked for
  4. Cows are ruminates and their digestive system is totally different to dogs, they have several stomachs and regurgitate. Their bloating is caused by gases made by their food.....When they bloat it is due to a different reason and it does not cause torsion. And it can be relieved by a puncture with a trocar. And boy does it smell rotten. This should never be attempted to a dog. you can in the early period some times pass a naso gastric tube and be lucky enough to get some of the gas pre torsion out of the stomach. If you live in a Rural are away from vets, it is good to have a bloat kit, like we do and to know the first aid. But it has to be caught early Dog bloat is closer in relationship to horse colic.........And it can happen due to many different reasons. Stress and anxiety being a large part. The reason a lot of people soak food is because some dogs gorge their food and do not realise when they have had enough. If this is dry, it will soak-up fluids in the stomach and enlarge to a much larger volume and that in some dogs can cause bloat. Some large dog lines never get it, others get it. So many studies have ben done and so much has been done to prevent it. you can only do your best. I have seen dogs who have had their stomach tacked re-bloat Here is a link to a bloat chart........... http://www.gdca.org/Bloat%20Chart.pdf gee gosh I know cows are ruminants. I was giving another example of bloat. And the collection of gases in dogs and them not being able to expell them can be a cause of bloat puncturing a dogs stomach with a needle CAN and DOES work thanks alot. Must tell my vet at the time never to attempt that again
  5. One of our Bulldogs bloated from age about 2 I think. We only punctured his stomach. Did not operate. He survived. One 5 month old puppy bloated. Was fed, exercise restricted but the blood vessel to his stomach died(autopsy) and he bloated and passed away at the vets. Many dogs who can not belch I think are susceptable to bloat. Cows can get bloat from eating grass which has a heavy frost on it or too much clover. Different animals I know but one of the treatments apart from puncturing their stomach(you have to cut in the right place) is bloat mixture which makes them belch. Off topic i know. Sorry. Interesting read on the article. Many of the items raised we knew of years ago
  6. Dogs produce saliva when eating their meals to help with the digestive process and also to help their food slide down their oesophagus. Bulldogs in particular can produce excess saliva causing them to choke up while eating. Gulping their food down doesnt help as well. With dry feeding, dogs produce more saliva than if wet fed. We now always soak our dog biscuits in hot water and they are left to cool. Bullmastiffs and the Bulldogs get their food soaked. They have plenty of chewbies to help with their teeth. This is after I saved one of our Bulldogs who got dry biscuits caught in her throat and I managed to get my hand down her throat to scoop out the biscuits. Dogs can choke up on any food. I know of a Bullmastiff who choked on a brisket and sadly died. always supervise with meal time
  7. Our minor puppy Bullmastiff got a fringy today Big Alex got Best of Breed, Maggie got reserve bitch and beat the minor puppy dog for MP of breed. Then she beat a couple of other minors for minor puppy of group. And she behaved herself as well which was a big bonus :D Best in show was an Irish Setter. Reserve in Show was a Standard Poodle
  8. To remember those who didnt make it in the Victorian fires and also their four legged friends. I am on Committee and will suggest it at the Allora show.
  9. I am going Saturday and Sunday Just sorting out my entry into the art show at the show society. Have a couple of leather pictures to enter. See yous all there. PS I dont think the weather is going to be great
  10. Thanks Troy I can see what you mean I liked the old system but then that is only my opinion. I prefer the 5 points and dont like the double for over 750 entries.
  11. Thanks showdog I really must put my glasses on LOL Must of scrolled right past it
  12. I found the thread.. Must of scrolled right past it LOL Totally agree witht he posts re the rising star and how it showuld reflect group and in show wins for double points and not breed. so unfair for some to have the goal posts moved. see my thread on DOL Pointscore
  13. Thats so true E But why move the goal posts just because you can. Doesnt make it fair for all. Many many shows here in Qld do not get entries of over 750
  14. apologies if this has already been covered but I cant find the thread. I have pm'd Troy about this. DOL now has double points if the entries for a show have over 750 dogs. How unfair is that? Well I think it is anyway. Scenario 1. Show has over 750 exhibits. You are the only exhibit in your breed in the Puppy class. You go no further for group. You get Puppy of Breed and double the points. Scenario 2. Show does not have over 750 exhibits. You beat 4 other puppies in your breed(or how ever many were entered). You go no further for group. You get Puppy of Breed and no more points but because the show had less than 750 exhibits. Sorry but I think that is bloody unfair. I do alot of ag shows. Yeah I do still travel to shows. I like the DOL pointscore but think this is so unfair. Its not my fault the entries didnt get to over 750. anyays rant over
  15. All of my dogs are grazers. Hubby said it would be a lot cheaper if we just fed them grass They get a varied diet but still like to munch on the green stuff.
  16. Does she gulp the water when drinking? If they gulp while drinking the intake of air will make their palate open to the windpipe at the same time causing water to go down Raising the water bowl may make a difference as her head will be elevated more.
  17. I would consider that rude unless the exhibitor asked for the critique not to be printed. same as judges who critique specialties and then dont send the critiques back at all!!!!
  18. When I have done dogalogues up I do age date order, youngest to oldest as this reflects the classes starting from baby puppy, to puppy to junior etc.
  19. I didnt realise there was a rule which stated that you must stay for a critique at a specialty show? Is there also a rule which states that it must be published in the schedule? Back in NZ there is a rule which states that if a Club has asked a judge to critique the dogs then it MUST be stated in the schedule that this will be happening. You also have the right to stay in the ring or you may leave if you didnt want your dog critiqued. You have paid for the judges opinion. If in your opinion you did not like the judges decision for what ever reason then why the heck stay for a critique which may be very damning. Make a note to ones self that you dont enter under that judge again Critiqueing is an art and can turn into a back stabbing bitch fight. Like wise, I can not find anywhere in the rules which states that Clubs have a right to publish the critiques if an exhibitor asks them not to.
  20. I had a judge examine my baby puppy at one show but she refused to mouth her. said to me"oh she is only a baby" I should of said to her.... "excuse me, but I paid $10.00 for you to judge my baby!" By the way she has a beautiful mouth if you only care to look". But I didnt. From now on I will. I have had enough of judges only giving a glance to some breeds but more of a look to others. By the way.....if a judge doesnt look at your dog when you are going around the ring(always check as you start off.... then stop and wait for them until they do.
  21. In judging breeds a judge must be seen to be having hands on. Even Specialist German Shepherd judges, specialists that they are in their judging, check teeth and testicles. Clubs when contracting judges, should be sending the message through that judges must physically go over their exhibits. I dont care whether they are smooth coats or long coats, a judge must be hands on. Dentiton, wry jaws, coat texture, examining long coated dogs, feeling muscle and shoulder angulation, examining in some dogs hardness of the pads of the feet, testicles(Yes there is a difference between real and false). So many things are hidden by grooming. In some cases long coated dog exhibitors have brought a bitch into the ring instead of a dog (or visa versa) and by checking this the judge can pick it up. If this had of happened to me while I was exhibiting then I would of said somethng to the judge in the first instance. if I did not agree with their comment then I would inform the Show Committee. You pay your entrance money for the judge to examine your dog. The judge is not there for a holiday
  22. Might I suggest that the newspapers are not called at this stage. There is no confirmation that this is happening and to bring this to the publics attention may make the ring move camp.
  23. Wildy PM me the place the dog went missing please. And any other details I do know of a friend of a friend who may be able to help if it is in our area
