In Tricks Of The Trade by Pat Hastings she says: never do something for a dog that you can teach the dog to do for itself. Much like children, puppies grow up more confident when they are taught to think for themselves. If you do everything for dogs, they will rely on you instead of learning to use their onw brains. how true it that!

Anybody who does research on the Staghound in books or internet sites will always be confused as there has never been a book written about them nor has their history been recorded other than by the breeders who use and continue to keep this working breed pure. You need to go to the "coalface" and talk to dedicated breeders or people who are over 90 years of age who have some understanding of working breeds of dogs in Australia to get an insight into this rare breed. You will find most of these dedicated breeders are usually private type people who are leading breeders of livestock with an outstanding knowledge of genetics who live in western Victoria or South Australia. 'Kangaroo'dogs are just a label like "pig dog","rabbit dog","fox dog"or"sheep dog"and should not be confused with the Staghound as a breed. so where are these dedicated breeders? Put your money where your mouth is!

they are 13 weeks old, still babies, stop putting so much pressure on them and yourselves. They are still 1000% easier to toilet train then children!

I teach my pups to sleep outside, with other dogs and on their own, to sleep in a crate overnight, to stay outside during the day with the other dogs or on their own. I want them to be adaptable in case something happens and they do need to do the opposite of what is "normal" for them. People's lives change through changes of jobs, housing, family members coming and going - death, marriage, births etc. In saying that though I am happy for my dogs to be in with me a lot and usually have one or two sleeping on the bed. But they all sleep outside at night when I am at work and I can and do mix and max them up when I am home. Ages of dogs range from 6 months to nearly 15 years and I have 4 of them.

From my reading here I think too many new puppy owners are too scared to just put the pup outside. Some allowances do need to be made for some circumstances but every pup I have had they have all been outside from day one for large periods of time. People seem to over think things and I do think it is because of information overload. It does the puppy no harm to be outside exploring it's world,in fact it is good for it's development. Much better then being stuck in a pen inside day after day cause the owners are so paranoid about the pup being loose in the yard. So many experts giving advice and saying "do this or that or otherwise you are a failure". What happened to common sense?

Just desexed Fern at 5. No regrets, she gave me 10 lovely pups in 2 litters, no need to keep her intact and risk pyro. Also desexed Miller before 2 once I decided he was not going to be bred from. Fully intend to desex Warrior ( only 6 months old at the moment ) once his show career is finished and I have a few straws put away, assumming he keeps progressing the way I want him to. Living in town, on a house block, can make it a tad interesting trying to keep dogs and bitches seperate when the bitch is in season so it's makes life easier for me and the dogs.

Hi Reb, I am now looking at getting one of these as a lighter weight alternative to our heavy Altegra. I am unable to get it out of the float by myself and although it is wonderful for specialties and weekenders, I find I never want to set it up if I am alone or just staying for a few hrs. I end up sitting in the car, which is fine in winter, but in summer it is too hot. I like the Deluxe Compact OzTrail 2.7 x 2.7 (not the short collapsing one, but the usual collapsing length), Blue Canopy. This one is $199 and the walls are around $36-$40 each, and there is no vent in the roof (which is why I am looking at the Bunnings one) Is this the one that you say is similar to your Bunnings one. And is your Bunnings one called Marquee? OH went and had a look this morning. It was $159, vent in roof, Blue canopy and we have to order in the walls (individually sold) for $28 I am tossing up between the two, but really like the roof vent. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My Bunnings one is 3 x 3 and the oztrail walls fit it. It seems identical to the deluxe oztrail, not a compact. I can put it up by myself.

Hummmmm maybe the gazebos did block some breeze but what I was asking did you see on the last day of the shows dogs walking around staggering and suffering from heat exhaustion as was posted on this forum. I bet not and I was at the show you have mentioned, it was a tad hot BUT definitely NO dogs nor people were suffering from heat exhaustion. The post was completely a fabrication of someone’s extreme imagination…. Easy. She has learned to use dog door/pee outside when you are home .. and that's it. She has not then transferred in her baby brain that dog door/pee can still happen when you are not there ... So that is why I will pen her whilst I am not there - to avoid the soiling issue when I am not there... she can use the pads and when I am home, she can use the door. I have no magical solution for her making the connection to use the doggie door when I am not there, which would be nice, and that is why I asked the question on this forum - to seek assistance as someone may be able to share experience with me. Persephone was right. it's like when you teach a dog to sit, if you only happen to do it in the kitchen next to the sink, then when you change the picture, ie ask for a sit in the loungeroom, the dog looks at you with a what expression. The dog has not learned that sit means sit wherever it is, you have to train it. Same as your puppy has not generalised that it can go through the doggy door while you are not in the house. Maybe prop open/tie up the door when you go outside for a few days to make it more inviting for pup to go out.

The one in my backyard has large water filled containers that fit around the legs as well as pegged down. It is also tied down very well to the fence around the puppy yard, 2 ropes to each corner.

Yep, friends of mine have this one - it is great. It also fits the oztrail walls for the delux - velcro in the exact same spots. mine is often set up next to an oztrail deluxe and except for the vent, I have yet to find any differences. I put one up over the puppy yard six months ago and the only "problem" is the roof has faded.

I love my one from Bunnings, same as the deluxe oztrail 3 x 3 for $159. And it has a little vent in the roof for those windy days.

your pup is not 100% toilet trained. You need to be more pro active in taking her out. One day of going in and out a doggy door is not enough to guarantee no accidents. ETA I am confused has the pup been using the doggy door for 3 weeks or one day, you mention both timeframes in your post.

you could paint it now and put it outside for a few days or maybe put some contact (the stuff that you cover books with) on the sides, or even tack some lino onto the sides.
