  1. Fern is brilliant, as good as any of my previous GSD's and Miller is learning from her.
  2. one of my dogs ended up with a wound nearly that size after a very minor scuffle between two of them. I checked her out at the time, found nothing. Later there was some swelling so I took her to the vet who shaved her down (smooth coat cross breed, no long hair hiding anything) and found a very, very small tooth mark and some underlying damage. So I consider it very feasible that 3 people could look at a long haired dog and find nothing initially.
  3. from the article in the link "Now, if four dissimilar pure-breeds e.g., Lhasa Apso, Cardigan Corgi, Saluki and Newfoundland, were allowed to interbreed willy nilly, within just two generations, the mixed-breed offspring would largely resemble shepherds, Labradors, huskies and terriers types, even though these dogs have had no shepherd, Lab, husky, or terrier blood in their veins for hundreds of generations. This phenomenon is known as atavism, whereby the interbreeding of highly selected strains causes a reversion to the wild type, i.e., wolfy-lookalikes (shepherds and huskies) and prototypical dogs (Lab-pointer types). Thus, many mongrel bites are erroneously classified as shepherd, Labrador and husky bites because the dogs looked like those breeds, i.e., the dogs were classified by phenotype (looks) rather than genotype (geneology)." The article was excellent but the above paragraph really caught my attention.
  4. and sometimes the club is perceived as a closed shop or dysfunctional by the corrupt; the arseholes, the hopeless and the helpless , when in reality it's not. In other words don't take everything you are told as gospel, find out things for yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised.

  8. well I wasn't going to say anything quite this early, but it looks like I will be show secretary for our local club next year and I fully intend to enter my dogs, whether I actually get to show them myself or get someone else too, way too early to say yet. But I am not missing out on a local show just because some perceive a possible bias on the judges part. I think it is pretty sad that so many people seem to think judges are so easily influenced.
  9. Valueplus for heartworm every 6 weeks, worming every few months and nothing else. If there is a flea problem I use a spot on but never regularly.
  10. try saying lay down just as she does it. Or when you find a food she really like use a clicker. Greyhounds from kennels aren't exactly used to thinking for themselves.
  11. actually it is best foster dogs, of any breed, don't learn it is ok to get on the furniture, many people, who are excellent homes, don't want their dogs on the furniture. Things like that are best left to the new owners to teach if they want too. Greys can live outside but they are usually used to living with other dogs, so if there are no other dogs they will most likely be happier inside. Plus they are now pets, not working dogs so why not be inside? Nevertheless, even if outside dogs, it helps for them to learn what the inside of a house is like in case they are sick and need to be kept inside for example.
  12. I just chucked on some old coats on my greyhound last year, ones his mother chewed up a bit he was really good considering he was under 6 months of age when I started coating him. Buy some cheap ones and just stitch them up, also put a neck on them, a sleeve from an old windcheater often works well, you can hand sew it onto the neck. I watched Fern when she did a bit of chewing and she could arch her neck pretty good and just catch the edge of the neck, with the extra long neck didn't matter how hard she tried she couldn't get a grip Get polar fleece ones, the usually fit better, IMO, then the weatherbeeta types that I have seen.
  13. so your family and friends are going to be ok if their wonderful pets have health issues in the future because you didn't do any health checks? something you should have done regardless of being registered or not. As a former vet nurse surely you would have seen the impact on both dogs and owners when health issues arise? You didn't test for PRA which can cause blindness? How sad. I hope your puppies, for their sake, remain in good health. It's not their fault they are here. and for what it's worth, all my dogs are pets first, everything else comes second.
  14. but you expect your puppy byers to desex before fully grown
  15. so you contacted the breeder and have verified that the papers are in fact correct
  16. well you don't know her either do; you not know how hard it can be for woman in a domestic violence situation to break free, that they do things they would normally not do so as to save themselves and you are contributing to her harrasement
  17. from one of kazzie_81's old post "I personally would NEVER desex any of my dogs before they were fully grown."
  18. it is so interesting read kazzie_81's old posts, very entertaining.
  19. watch out Sway, you know they will all be after you now cause you have pointed this out. Of course it was because you were so miffed at missing out on a sale
