Training a pup for confirmation
Rebanne replied to NikkiandKane's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is my very first time in the ring and Fern was exactly 3 months of age. She liked that judge a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YofMrDsx9s -
Training a pup for confirmation

start him on a table while he is small enough. All my Greyhound pups have started on a table. There are some great resources on YouTube, just google and watch a few and get a feel of what makes sense to you. I have some videos with my youngsters, look up Doggone2007. No instructions but you can see how short the video's are and how wiggly the pups can be. I'm not an expert by any means, in fact I taught my first show dog to A frame beautifully ( legs too stretched ) even though I had taught 2 dogs to a high level of obedience which included free stands. I just built it up to some big deal in my head and it isn't! Once shows are back go along and have a look. You will see plenty of mature dogs still mucking around. One of my pups from my last litter ( 3 years old tomorrow ) wanted to show the dog but won't do it until he is perfect (insert eyeroll ) I don't care if the dog is shown or not but if you wait until perfect you will be waiting a long time. -
is that just colour on his left ear ( as he looks at you, in the photo ) it looks like a bandage lol

Will you DNA test the pups to make sure it was your boy?

How awful for you, the puppy and the transport people. I'd be waiting for the autopsy results before saying it was caused by transport. How old was the puppy cause that's a long way to travel by road.

as well as all the above why not just go and knock on your neighbour's door and have a chat? Explain your concerns about the temporary fencing and your dogs special needs. Temporary doesn't have to equal flimsy.

OMG already! That went quick, maybe not for you though LOL Just keeps things as calm as possible and only give a couple of small feeds today.

I believe it's to keep the weight off the rib cage, breast bone so it recovers it's normal shape.

So cute!

I've never had one but it shows up very early. Excellent information posted above or there is plenty of info if you goggle.

I don't believe the breeder can flag the chip unless she takes the previous owner to court over non compliance with the contract that was in place. Did the old owner give you the microchip form or are you using a new one? Cause if it was the old one it would have been what they got from the breeder and it should have been signed by her How long ago did you contact the breeder?
-
The dogs papers mean nothing unless they are transferred into your name. I'd be getting in touch with the breeder again as they can be a real source of information for you and if you like this boy so much you may want another down the track and the breeder may be able to help. Most people here would advise to hold off desexing until the dog is fully mature. As you have had him some months past 11 months, even if he was a large breed, he should be ready to go if you want. And the breeder more likely to sign the microchip papers. Plus the breeder has had time to digest all that has happened to one of her dogs and realised any anger, annoyance etc should be directed at the previous owner, and should work with you for the best outcome for the dog.

I think a vet check is in order. She's been unwell (fever) and is now refusing food.
-
I hope there are no plans to breed from him. No papers and no health testing which could be a life or death matter depending on the breed
-
I don't blame the breeder, I'd be furious but I would want to check you out a bit before signing anything. But in the end I would most likely sign the transfer form. It used to be that a letter would be sent to the owner listed by the microchip company and they had 14 days to reply. If no reply the microchip would be transferred. So send the form in and see what happens.

Advice Please: I'm interested in 9wk old puppy for rehoming

This is what it seems to come down to and I for one would not be happy with this. Scratch has made very good, valid points. -

I think a vet check is in order. As for payment, well I wouldn't be paying the breeder unless they have already refunded the current puppy owner. Otherwise they are double dipping. At 9 weeks of age the breeder should be the one who you have a contract with, all being well with the vet check. A pet owner is not going to be around to help you out. If the breeder is not willing to back her 9 week old pup I would be having serious thoughts about whether I'd want a pup from them - ever. -
Thanks for the update Jimmy, all sounds good

I've never ever had to wash a dog after its eaten. Sometimes baby puppies get into a mess but Mum is happy to clean them. Most I've seen is some red coloration on the paws. The dogs soon clean that up.

new puppy and choosing a show name....and pet insurance

so you have 20 letters/spaces to use and it doesn't matter if a name is already in use as long as the prefix is different. People would also say it is courteous not to use a name famous in the breed. With my first show dog I called her Fern, had never heard of another dog called Fern and it turned out there was a rather well known whippet whose call name was Fern - oops but at least it was a call name and really how's a person to know. You'll find lots of names are used several times. Heir In Waiting Waiting To Be King Wanting To Be King Heir Presumptive King To Be Prince Charming Royal Ruler Rules The World -

how exciting! Ok you can choose a name up to 30 letters or spaces including the prefix. So how many letters in the prefix? You can make a play with the parents name, with your previous dogs or your kids! XXXXXXX (prefix) Chosen One Pet insurance: I've used Pet Plan, Medibank Private and Woolworths. Always covered accident and illness. I never bothered with the ones that cover vaccinations as I never thought the extra cost was worth it. -
Help me come up with a registered name?

does the breeder have a theme happening? How many letters do we have to play with? Including spaces the limit is 30 so how many letters in the prefix? Weeping Willow springs to mind immediately Pussy Willow Salix is the genus name for willow -
pups being absorbed is "normal" Often when people say a bitch missed it's because the pups were absorbed before pregnancy was confirmed. If you want to try again I suggest you find a good repo vet in your area and consider prog testing and maybe supplementation. It could also have been a one off thing, not every pregnancy ends up with a live birth, no matter what the mammal.
