  1. I've always taken my pups to the local obedience groups. Any time I've tried private I've not been impressed. In Victoria there are quite a few clubs run by the GSD club. Maybe there is the same in QLD. I think it is important, wherever you go, that offers lifestyle manners first. Things like go to your mat, loose leash walking, help with life manners - no jumping up or nipping etc rather then perfect sits and heeling.
  2. Dentals would be for both and any dog you get should be closely watched with the kids and the kids with the dog!
  3. sounds like a scam. Go to your local pound/shelter and adopt a dog from there
  4. Tricky. You will get many different answers. I wouldn't be comfortable charging for a missed service. If you kept the bitch at your place then it would be reasonable to expect some payment for that. Also it takes two to tango. When was your stud dog last checked for fertility? It could be a problem with either dog, both dogs or no problems - it just didn't happen this time.
  5. I use a 120cm crate for my adult Greyhounds. The male is 75 cms at the shoulders and 38 kilos. The X pen I use is approx 120cm square and 90cm high and holds my 2 bitches. You might need taller as staghounds are often deerhound crosses and deerhounds are taller then my greys. Something like this might be suitable 120cm high and you could configure it into a shape that suits but some of them are quite flimsy and you would need a roof, which can be made out of shade cloth. There are heavier duty ones which of course cost more.
  6. you don't have to use a crate but I'd be letting her sleep in the bedroom with you on her own bed. Then you can hear if she gets restless and take her out to the toilet. And if it helps think of a crate as just keeping her in one area to limit pee and poop being spread around. Doesn't have to be forever. Long before crates I used to use barriers to keep pup in one area at night.
  7. I'd be thinking infection from the dog wash. Whether it's bacterial or fungal though ? I've never had a dog with "old man dry feet". I'd be doing the antibiotics and the paw paw and if it doesn't clear up an antifungal
  8. and I've never done it! But with 3 out of 4 litters by frozen semen we had D day down to the last minute.
  9. 24 -48 hours but can you take him back for a friendly visit first seeing as how he wasn't great there the first time?
  10. So sorry to read this. It won't help but I wouldn't have done daily ultrasounds either. R.I.P baby girl
  11. I feel for you Sher. Bad enough waiting when the dates known. Hang in there.
  12. Of course a lot of registered breeders care deeply for their dogs and every time you breed your beloved bitch there is a risk to the bitches life. I might consider to breed a litter for the pet market once but only once. If I had a breed people wanted of course. My dogs are too precious to me to risk willy nilly. I could barely bring myself to breed to help continue the breed and get something to continue on with. I doubt the commercial puppy farmers worry to much about losing a bitch now and then. And I think the real BYBer's, the ones with one bitch that is so sweet and everyone wants a pup from her, even consider the risk to their beloved pet.
  13. @Sher@5 any update please
  14. your post seems rather aggressive. I understand your frustration but it's not DOL's fault the exam hasn't been updated. For what it's worth I agree with you. When I did the exam years ago there were actually a couple of points I disagreed with.
  15. if there is huge interest in him then someone might be willing to help out, maybe for a reduced stud fee
  16. No they aren't because they will usually still be getting milk from Mum. But most people do still like to feed milk which is why lactose free dairy milk or goats milk is used.
  17. did you see the mating? Can you count 63 days from then. With only a single pup a bitch often won't go into labour. So progesterone is needed but not an ultrasound unless there is a reason to suspect pup is in distress. Don't give oxytocin. It is no longer recommended and certainly not unless the bitch has been in active labour for sometime. Does the vet do the prog test on site or send it out? $272 does sound excessive. Any other decent vets you trust you can go to?
  18. cut and pasted from the facebook page: "Due to the increase in the number of people falsely claiming to be ANKC Ltd Registered Breeders, we have added a new facility to our web site, to check if a breeder is a registered ANKC breeder, inquirers simply enter the breeder's prefix or membership number and tick search." http://ankc.org.au/Home
  19. ok I'd be asking your breeder who they think would most suit you and your circumstances. Something I was told many many years ago was don't pick the shyest pup nor the boldest but I have also learnt since then that what appears to be the shyest has just had a good feed and wants to sleep and the boldest might have just had a good sleep and be ready for action! You want to get a vaccination certificate and microchipping change of ownership papers. Parents should have had any relevant health tests and you should be able to see the results. The pups should have been wormed 3/4 times and be 8 weeks old.
  20. Obvious you didn't read the original post Asal. Wasn't me who said 3 litters. I was responding to tdierikx's post. Maybe you should read things more carefully instead of just going off on another of your rants
  21. you can get lactose free milk from the supermarket. All my pups were having this with raw mince from 3 or so weeks. A pink slushie. I also used up any proper formula I had to make the slushie. Depending on age they always had water available and their food was sloppy and as they got older their food became less sloppy.
  22. I don't have a problem with providing pups for pet homes, not at all. But most breeders only have a couple of dogs to breed from. In your example above @tdierikx what happens to those 16 bitches after they have had their 3 litters? Sure some may be rehomed as adults but with limited room what happens to the ones that aren't moved on quickly. And the breeder would most likely keep replacement pups so how many dogs do they actually end up keeping at any one time? The 4 stud dogs could be kept if they were unrelated to each other and used over the other dogs daughters but even they would need to be moved on in the end. Yeah I think that's puppy farming, the dogs are seen like livestock not as pets. Then you have the backyard breeder, the real one, people like me that have pets first, show and breeding dogs second. I have a 3 dog permit. I have a litter and keep a pup to run on. End of breeding until someone dies as my dogs stay with me for life. If I had a more popular breed, one that has plenty of enquiries, I might breed another litter for "orders" but as I love my dogs and breeding is risky I doubt I would risk them too often. Just wouldn't interest me. I'd actually be more likely to breed my unwanted breed to help keep the breed going then breed a popular one, my reasoning being there are usually plenty of other people keeping the popular breed going.
  23. Before the internet dog breeders used to advertise in the Saturday papers. My breed of interest way back then was the GSD and the club had notices in both the Age and the Sun. I know at one stage clubs were advertising on Gumtree but I think Gumtree stopped them. I seem to recall that DogsVic also advertised with their previous names. Even local obedience clubs used to advertise in local papers. I got into Greyhounds via a friend who was researching for a new dog. Can't quite recall if it was via the internet or not but she was able to research breeds that interested her and spoke to several breeders and actually visited a couple (not Greys). She would be considered very much general public and all previous dogs had been un papered and several from pounds. So the info has always been there. Yes you have to be interested enough to research but that is true of most things in life. Have you never heard of the big Dogs Day Out? Never seen the ads for that or the Pet Expo where many breed clubs had stalls?
