My current 2 greys are not racers. I used a haltie on Piper (7 years) for over 12 months, he slowly came to his senses and I can mostly walk him on an ordinary collar now but will still use the haltie in places of high excitement ie the GAP Christmas party, for the 1st hour or so until the fizz runs out Fern (9 months) can pull like a train but her exercise is taken care of by going to the local slipping track and letting her run like a mad fiend, then back into the car. Lazy I know but it works for us.

Most retired racers are a dream to walk. Not sure why, they just are!

Do Pet Greyhounds Need More Food Than Other Dogs?

I wouldn't add rice and pasta. If he needs to put weight on feed him more good stuff, not fillers. -
Do Pet Greyhounds Need More Food Than Other Dogs?
Rebanne replied to Silly Cat's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Piper is around 40 kilos, he gets either 1/2 a lamb flap, or 3 chicken carcass's (full ones from the butcher, not the skimpy things from the supermarket) or 3 or 4 cups of dry with extra's like sardines, eggs or Natures Gift tin food. Sometimes he has an extra meal of porridge. Fern at 9 months and 30 kilos get the same as Piper except for the chicken carcass's, she only gets 2. Plus a few extra feeds of left overs, porridge etc over a week. Main meal for both at the moment is the lamb flaps, get them at least 4 times a week. -
put her bed in a corner of the bedroom and set the alarm to get you up during the night. If you can manage to barricade her to her corner well and good, if not as you have bare boards you should hear her moving around. You do have to start at the beginning but because she is those few weeks older she should get it quicker purely because her bladder capacity is bigger. Yes there will be the odd accident but there shouldn't be heaps as long as you are vigilant.

My 3 Month Old Puppy Just Urinated While She Was Asleep
Rebanne replied to Bokezu's topic in Puppy Chat
I know a kitten did this once while sleeping on someone's chest! -
I had a GSD bitch on one stilboestrol a week for several years. It didn't cost a lot and worked wonders. We started off on a higher dose and worked down. If she didn't get her one a week she started leaking again. This was a few years ago now.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Greyhounds I never weigh my dogs food. Depending on the time and the day my guys might get a couple of chicken carcass's and I mean a whole carcass, not those tiny things sold at supermarkets as frames. Or they might get 20 or so chicken necks at a time. That's one meal for each greyhound Piper, 7 yo male 40 kilos, Fern, 8 month old female need to check her weight but I'm guessing high 20's. Then their other meal for the day, and Piper doesn't always get fed twice but Fern does, would be dry food. 2 cups for Fern, plus whatever I feel like chucking in. Eggs might be added 3 times in a row or sardines for a couple of days or Nature's Gift (tin) a couple of times or it might only be plain dry food. Then there are the times I chuck out the bread crusts for them to demolish, the marrow bones for a good chew and sometimes I get their chicken carcass already minced up. I feed the Pedigree Natural from the supermarket, can't get Great Barko here or I would give it a try. I used to feed a pure Barf diet but quite frankly, after seeing one dog too many die of cancer while fed from puppyhood on Barf, I no longer believe it is everything I was told it would be. So now I mix and match and my dogs are doing beautifully, as they did when on pure barf and as they did when fed on the cheapest food going many years ago. Unless your bitch is very large 31-32 kilos sounds like a good weight. Not all dogs eat the recommended amount of dry food.

Have Judges Become Too Pedantic?
Rebanne replied to Tapferhund's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Many, many years ago I was trialling under a senior, respected judge. He pinged me many points in the heeling as he thought my voice and hands signals were not given together, hence a double signal. Fair enough I thought until I asked him which signal was coming in early, voice or hand. His answer? " I don't know, they were too close together to tell" If he couldn't tell which was first how could he tell they were apart?? I never trialled under him again. -
Fern started out in a wire crate, then I got her the soft crate and am about to buy her another wire crate. She out grew the other wire one. Fern has turned into a bit of a Mummy's girl and is scratching at the soft crate mesh to get out when we go showing and I leave her!

I finally did some show shopping today at the local op shop! Got a lovely blue jacket, fully lined, for $12. I was after a black one but they didn't have any in my size so maybe next time ;)

I put my dogs outside when I vacuum so it's no problem. If I do leave one in they just move from room to room away from me. As for the plastic bags, try putting his food in some. Tip from the bag to the bowl. All my dogs love the sound of plastic bags as that's where all their food comes from. They are downright embarrassing when out and about if someone rustles a bag!

I got the one from ebay, no Brunnings near me! I love it and the dogs are fine with it

2yr Old Ex -racing Greyhound Girl
Rebanne replied to bluecollie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can't add anything except to say Polly is beautiful. My 1st greyhound was a white and black boy, Sam, so I think the "cow" dogs are extra special! You can't stop at one you know -
consider the weather. Fern is 6 months old and fully housetrained but pee's on the carpet on the back verandah when the ground is wet! Last night it was raining and I dreaded what the carpet would be like but she peed on the mattress (in it's waterproof covering thankfully) and the bedding was soaked. Easily washed but...... The back verandah is now blocked off so Fern can only go in the backyard, the dog yard or in the kennel! Hopefully she will get used to wet feet and go where she is supposed to go. Only ever have this problem when the ground is wet and have never had this problem with a dog before. If I take her up the back she runs back to the verandah to pee and I can't get there in time to stop her. Tomorrow when I am home from work I'll put her on a long line when I walk her around the back yard so she can't make the mad dash to dry ground When I'm not home she'll be blocked off.

Sway does the ebay one you put up come with the bits needed for doing the dogs nails? ETA would Mitre 10 have something similar?

Fern was done by the breeder at 6 weeks, I did the parvac at 10 weeks and she got the Protech C3 at 14 weeks. She'll get her booster 12 months after the C3, then maybe at 5 or 6 years of age. I will consider doing the parvac every 3 years or so.

I'm sorry for your loss About 5 years ago one of my dogs was poisoned, we think. My vet was fairly certain is was 1080, never had any proof and luckily my dog recovered well though it was touch and go. The time frame was the same as your girl, about 1 1/2 hours from the only time he could have eaten anything to the onset of symptons. He was staggering around like a drunk, unable to stand, head banging later on, signs of bleeding in the brain. It was very puzzling and to this day I wonder what hit him.

Ladders For Back Leg Work
Rebanne replied to shoemonster's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I used a body wrap - a long bandage in a figure 8 around the dogs body:- under the neck, around the chest, cross over the back, around and down the back legs, just under the buttocks at the top of the hock. I then laid poles on the ground, like pick up sticks, and walked my dog through them. Also you can leave the body wrap on and do some simple work with the dog. Worked wonders with my GSD. -
I took Fern to her 1st training night and we just stood at the side for an hour. It was my choice to do this as I consider it pointless trying to get a puppy who has left her brain at home to learn much at all! By the end she was sitting and we did walk back to the car on a loose lead so we achieved something in my book. But Fern was too stressed/excited to eat the treats. It also doesn't help that I train positive and the club is mainly negative but they do allow flat collars, food and a clicker for pups, so they are trying. But an instructor also tried to force Fern to sit until I told her to take her hands off my dog, which she did quick smart! Same instructor didn't even know greyhounds are sighthounds, just thought they are dogs that run around race tracks. As long as they let me pay my money and do my own thing I'll be happy, it's good socialisation for Fern. Sorry for the hijack got carried away How did Hunter go?

Plastic Milk Bottles And Containers
Rebanne replied to bark's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've used empty plastic bottle for years for many dogs and pups. When we had a recycling crate I used to leave it on the ground and the dog/s could pick out the bottle they liked best. I do remove the lid and ring before giving them to the dog/s and remove from play when suitably squashed! I've never put food inside, the dogs love them like they are. -
I leave martingales on, correctly fitted. Often my dogs don't have collars at all though :D

Breeder Brag - Performance
Rebanne replied to mersonmalinois's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
excellent news MM. You must be very proud of everyone involved, breeder, dog, owner -
Okay, I reckon this is a stress thing. He might be whinging because he doesn't know if he's getting fed or not. I've re read your thread a couple of times but I can't see where you say he gets fed eventually. I'm sure he does but I can't see that. Why not try changing the routine? Try making it more individual. Try what cowanbree says - put Vespa in a crate and feed him in there, as soon as he is quiet whip that food in there fast, gradually increasing the time he needs to be quiet. My greys have been bigger whingers than my GSD's. But they haven't barked near as much GSD's and greyhounds are worlds apart. Yes Vespa needs his manners and basic obedience etc but they are different. They can be quite sooky. Piper is a pain in the .... with his sooking but that's him, I live with it. He sooks in the morning to wake me up but goes straight back to bed when I do get up. But after 5 years he hasn't figured out, make Mum get up, than out you go! Grey-fast very few dogs are "cognitively challenged" they just need the owners/trainers to adjust/find a way of training that fits them better. Greyt term BTW. "cognitively challenged" love it

Peas & Other Foods Which Might Not Be So Good For My Dog
Rebanne replied to Bubitty's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is there really a difference between feeding from a raised bowl as opposed to not? I have been thinking about this for some time. Would appreciate any advice. Some Dane owners swear by raised feeders, some don't. Greyhound owners are the same, some swear by raised dishes, some say it causes bloat! I actually feed Piper at a step only because he has such a long way down to reach!
