  1. Thanks Sidoney, I was thinking along those lines but haven't tried it yet. Lablover, Fern seems to always back up. The only times I have really wanted her to sit up to now have been cause of great excitement, coming inside, going out for a walk, getting into the car etc. It's almost as if she is so excited she can't quite get her bum into gear. But I have been watching her sit for her meals and while it is a rock back sit she doesn't step back. I think it is because the quicker she sits the quicker she eats. So maybe I need to work on very quick sits and just ignore the back up ones. Hmm, thinking, thinking........ she does she a chiropractor occassionally and is usually out in the front end, right in the area she uses to body slam my other dog! He is out in the area's he get slammed in.
  2. Thanks for the reply Rom. I was trying to avoid putting Fern on lead but I will give this a go. When I say she backs up she does more than move her front legs backwards, she literally backs into a sit, stepping back several times as her bum gets lower. The more excited she is, as in will the back door open and let me in, the more she goes backwards.
  3. Some background first :D Fern is a 16 month old greyhound bitch who I have been showing in the conformation ring. Now she has her title I am going to try and get her in the obedience ring. I have previously trained 2 GSD's to get their CDX's and one got 2 passes in UD before bad hips got in the way. I have also titled one of the GSD's and a beagle cross in agility, before there were multiple classes. So it a while since I trained a dog for competition obedience. I haven't been paying a lot of attention to how Fern sits, as long as she sat when I wanted her to i.e. before coming in the door, I was happy. I did note that her sits were nice and square :p what I didn't notice is she backs up into them :D So when she sits in front she ends up about 4 foot away from me, same as sitting at my side, ends up quite a way behind me. Not a good look for the ring. Fern is clicker savvy and very food motivated but only for a short period of time. I have to keep reminding myself I'm not training a shepherd now Suggestions on ways to re teach the sit so it's her back legs moving forward, not her front legs stepping back, would be greatly appreciated. BTW having Fern in a corner does stress her slightly.
  4. Hi, my greyhound bitch is 16 months old and yes it's a constant battle to keep weight on her. She too is going through a very lean stage, looking like a toast rack! What puts on weight on my girl is lamb flaps. Haven't had any for a couple of weeks and it shows. I try and give Fern at least 3 a week but it was hard over the Chrissy/New Year break to get them.
  5. I have used it on the older dogs but never yearly. I don't vaccinate yearly.
  6. while I have never had two bitches of the same age together I never had a moments trouble with keeping 2 German Shepherds bitches or a shepherd and a smaller cross breed bitch. But I have had trouble with greyhound bitches and the crossbreed. Depends on the dogs and how strong you are in leadership.
  7. This is what I did with Fern, though she had been weaned from about 4 weeks. Mum had had enough.
  8. Piper very occasionally will throw up chicken neck bones, not often enough for me not to give them to him. He is fine with the minced stuff and full carcasses. A friend's grey does not tolerate chicken at all, so he never gets it.
  9. I used the parvac one on Fern when she was a puppy. I used it between the C3 6 week shots and 12 week ones. Gave it to her at 10 weeks and actually put back the 12 to 14 weeks. Also gave one to the other dogs at the same time. Once Fern has had her booster in Feb she'll only be getting parvac. I don't believe in multiple vaccination shots every year.
  10. Only discipline needed here was on yourself for leaving a bucket of water out for the pup to get into. He most likely barked at it because he was startled, not to alert you to "his mistake". Would you leave a bucket of water out for a baby to fall into?
  11. she can get the nasal spray anytime you want.
  12. umm sorry I don't see why you have attacked me this way. All I made was a comment, which BTW I am entitled to do. Maybe you should take a chill pill?
  13. Interesting reading this thread as a flip finish to me is when they leap up and flip themselves into the air turning mid air to get into the heel position. The flip finishes described here are what I call swing finishes.
  14. My dogs always get the cut off bacon rind. In fact I buy bacon with rind just so the dogs can have a little treat. There is not a lot of rind to go between 3 dogs from 250 grams bacon. They get this, if they are lucky, once a month. And even rarer is to get the bacon and egg frypan leftovers diluted with water tipped over their food or a piece of bread.
  15. excellent post wonder what is going to happen to the greyhound Frank is also part owner of?
  16. Please register your dog with GAP asap so if the breeder doesn't want her back and you don't want her she will at least have a chance of a home. They have a long waiting list though so the sooner she is on it the better.
  17. none of my dogs, GSD's and Greyhound's, have been keen on them.
  18. I feed them as they come. I just tried a new supplier, boy were they big, meaty, and fatty. I cut Piper back to 2 and Fern back to 1 1/2, instead of the 3 and 2 they were given before.
  19. I agree, he's chucking a tantie cause he can't get to you.
  20. A friend of mine had a black grey who had shocking skin when she got him. Nothing worked and she's been feeding Barf for ever. In the end it was 2 or 3 doses of a medicated wash that cleared his skin and he's been fine ever since, this was about 5 years ago.
  21. Okay, this is the key for me. Your pup hasn't learnt not to go in the house. Your pup has been making the choice to go outside but with the door shut her choice has been taken away. You need to go back to basics, keep the door shut and take her out every hour or so until she gets the idea. My dogs rarely ask to go outside to the toilet, I take them out every few hours. If they need to go out they get off the couch and stand around looking hang dog. :D
  22. You need to make the effort to take your pup to places like kindergarten and school. Keep to a distance your dog feels safe at and treat and treat and treat for every time he shows interest in the kids. Ears up and tail relaxed. You might have to start by sitting in the car. Utilise your niece and nephew. Decide how important it is to you that he "loves" kids. He won't be so appealing to them once grown. I have a 11 month old greyhound, loves people to bits. But kids, they are scary! I have no kids here and no plans to socialise her to them. Kids aren't a factor in our life.
  23. A 9 week old puppy still needs 3 feeds a day. Don't cut it down to 2 yet! Their little stomachs can't hold all they need to grow and stay healthy in only 2 feeds. You will just have to weather this. Cutting her food to try and stop her waking you up is not on. I would consider that she will need to go out twice a night for another couple of weeks, then once a night for a few weeks more.
  24. With greyhound's, you either do or don't. Jury is out. I find mine often put their lamb flaps etc on a higher surface themselves, things like their dog beds. Then of course they sometimes get on the dog bed as well. When I do feed dry food I just put their bowl on the ground.
  25. Good grief! How tall are your guys??? Your two must be very tall! They are both tall, Piper is 75cms at the shoulder, Fern approx 70cms. Both a show bred greys. I have a friend with a racing grey who is the same height as Piper but looks best at 38 kilos. Most of Piper's ribs are just visible, if they are covered he is fat. Fern's 30 kilo's was before she got more lamb flaps, all her ribs were showing a lot. I have been free running her at the track and forgot to up her feed. After 4 feeds of lamb flaps in a week hers ribs are now covered nicely. Oh and don't forget the porridge. I only coat mine at night. It's very rare for me to coat them during the day as they are usually inside (they are inside at night but the heater is turned off) I will coat them if they go outside for any length of time.
