Hmmm and I wonder how many of those breeders advertising in the paper were registered? Why can't they ever make a distinction between BYB and reg breeders.

I read on an American website that 60% of Danes will bloat (and from that I think they mean GDV). Very scary. My new girl is a stress-head (she is very very scared of most things) and that just increases the risk.
-
My two older dogs are ball chasers. Maisie especially is quite obsessed. As soon as you go outside, she runs off to find something to throw. Champa likes to play, but won't initiate the game. The other two chase the older two but have no idea what is going on! LOL!

I think I might get my new Dane's stomach stitched when she is desexed too. Does it prevent torsion completely?

What breed? Great Dane How old was the dog? 2.5 years Was there a familial component? Yes, her father died of bloat. What was the dog being fed? Need some detail of what exactly - if dry food, which one, if raw, what it was She had chicken carcasses and Bonnie dryfood How often was he fed? Once daily or more? Twice daily Was his bowl elevated, or on the ground? On the ground What was he doing when he bloated? (ie, at a show, at home, playing, at home alone) Home alone Has he bloated more than once? She died from this episode, this was her first bloat. Has he had a gastrowhatsit? LOL (too lazy to look it up, but you'll know ) No Did he ever bloat after that? See above Did the dog also suffer GDV Yes, her stomach twisted, which is why she died. Did it have surgery? See above What was done to relieve the bloat? We found her dead and bloated. The vet suspects she drank too much water too quickly because it was a hot day, and she hadn't had any recent meals. My other dog, a Lab x, bloats frequently. He gulps his food down very quickly and often gets a very distended stomach. He has never torsed though. It just seems to be one of his quirks.

I suspect they would also be desexed at this point though, perhaps thats why they have to come back. What a mammoth operation. It sounds like the RSPCA is actually working really hard to care for ALL of these dogs.

I have no problem with compulsary desexing of cats. Kittens can be safely desexed with no long-term health risks from 8 weeks old. Dogs are different though.

What To Do About Chewing/eating Her Bed
Kirty replied to becandcharch's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dogs are all bed chewers. My older dogs are now 7 and 8yrs old and they still chew beds. And coats. And collars. I am currently using plain trampoline beds and one bed which is covered in a sort of shade-cloth like material. So far, they are in tact (touch wood). I haven't found a way to stop them destroying the beds yet so am watching this thread carefully! -
Domestic shorthair and Domestic longhair are just descriptions, they are not fancy pants names!
-
I read longcoats post to read that there are lots of DOGS of DIFFERENT breeds (ie any breed) that are more prey driven than others, that have more aggression hard-wired into them than other DOGS. Not comparing breeds, but comparing individual dogs. I do not believe that all aggressive dogs are created. I believe just like some people are born evil, perhaps so are some DOGS. Not breeds, DOGS.

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a gorgeous girl. RIP Brydee.

I am so sorry. RIP Bonnie.

ROFL!!! What a joke!! I have never met a pedigree Maltese despite years of working as a groomer and now in a vet clinic!! LOL!! Every second person claims their hideous white fluffy is a Maltese or Maltese x Shih Tzu. Great piece of writing that is!! ROFL!!
-
Perhaps we should get a shocked looked on our face and say "Oh I'm so sorry, but I think you've been had! There is no such thing as a Groodle - here, look at this dog book..." hehe
-
I'm not sure what my dogs will do. Champa is a tart so he'll probably jump all over the person. Maisie will probably be unsure. Phoebe - well probably wouldn't even get her in the door!
-
KKDD, I was just looking at their website and if you follow a few links you get to their page about breeders. They openly state that they do not support people breeding animals at all.
-
No oodles on our computers either.
-
Justin, so where do the 250,000 excess dogs and cats go every year? To 'the farm'?
-
Or she wants to eat it. I would be VERY careful. You need to watch her body language and take it very slowly. Dogs in prey drive will get very excited (tail erect, wagging, ears forward, eyes wide, etc) and may also lick the kitten and seem friendly. But its not always what it seems. You need to teach her to be gentle and to back off. I would discourage licking (tasting LOL) and encourage calm, quiet behaviour.

Hmm so maybe its just my suburb! LOL! We do seem to have a lot of purebreds around here. I saw someone walking a Saluki the other day - not a dog you see everyday.
-
Berner baby was so cute! Looked like a giant next to all the other pups though! LOL!
-
Bet the Deerhounds were the cutest dogs there!! And Elfin, I assume you took full advantage of the horny oodle? Get a free mating and sell the pups for $$$$!! Doodlehounds, perhaps?
-
I had to go to the local vet this evening, and they were running puppy preschool while I was there. Guess what? Not one oodle in sight! In fact, every puppy was a purebred! There was a Berner, Cav, Visla, Chi, Am Staff and a Golden.

I am so very sorry to read of your tragic loss. May he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to you and your family.
