  1. Probably because the owners don't train them properly. They think a little dog is little trouble, but even these little guys need teaching, stimulation and exercise. You have a dog, you have to look after it in all ways.
  2. You are in Brisbane City Council area, I believe? That is good to know. Gecko Tree, apparently you live on the wild side of the law, where rabbits, ferrets and pit bulls abound whatever breed the dogs were, they were uncontrolled, untrained, and uncontained, and probably savage, and they did a terrible thing. The owners should be fined. They have also done another terrible thing to pitbulls. When will people learn there is no place in society for dogs like this? It was the partly the action of a similar criminally stupid owner which allowed the Qld Gov to legislate bans. When will these stupid people learn? A woman has been mauled, one dog has died, and another will die. Because of stupidity. Jed, I my question was, are these dogs called American Staffs and NOT APBT so they can legally be kept. I have a feeling that in Victoria, APBT are supposed to be sterilised, do that the breed will eventually die out.
  3. Am I correct in thinking that the American Staffy is the same breed as the APBT? Some say they are not the same, and some say they are one and the same. All I can say is that they look to my untrained eye the same breed. Is this a way to have them legalised? It's interesting to note that at my local park, all of a sudden, there were three separate owners, without any connections, coming to the park with young puppies. We were told they were American Staffies. On one particular day, one of the pups tried to play with the visiting different breed 'teenage' pups, and every single 'teenager' growled and refused to play with this pup. I know a lot has to do with the way the pup is brought up by the owner, but I get very nervous if they are not properly trained and educated. Several years ago, a house behind where we live was being rented out to tenants with two of these dogs. We had a Great Dane at that time, and those two behind us were literally throwing themselves at and charging the fence to get at the Dane. It was really frightening. My boy was really a gentle giant.
  4. I'm with you. Just leave without any fuss. The more you make, the worse it is. They know we're coming back, and now they're just used to it. If it's a nice day, we leave them outside, but most times at night they are inside.
  5. Are you feeding the necks with skin on. If so, I would remove the skin off all chicken until his tummy settles down. Sometimes it takes a while for the tummy to settle down with raw. Roo meat should be fine, because it is so lean, but each dog is different.
  6. Good on you for recognizing the problem with your dogs and doing something about it. I don't know how much more education owners who overfeed their dogs need. Because they love them, don't they and you realise that by doing this the dogs are literally being killed with what is wrongly called kindness. There is absolutely nothing kind about it.
  7. At the park where I take my boys for a walk and social interaction, there is a man that walks a blue cattle dog, and everytime I see them, it reminds me of a barrel with legs. Sheesh, can't people see what they're doing. Another is a Beagle. I saw her develop from a svelt trim and terrific puppy to now a poor girl who waddles, sits down very often because she has no stamina to keep going. That is just plain and utter cruelty. I am often asked why I don't feed my boys more food, They are not skin and bone, but you can feel their ribs when lightly touched. Just perfect!!!!!
  8. My mini schnauzer, several years ago had the same problem, but he was quite ill for about a week. He had daily vet attention during that time. This was after his puppy booster shot at 16 weeks. Since that time, he had two more vaccinations, but before each one, he had an antihistimine shot 30 minutes prior. With my younger dog, I have decided to do titers instead of jumping straight into vaccinations and if he does not have immunity he will be given a 3 yr. shot. I do not want to have him vaccinated needlessly.
  9. Have you tried introducing the raw in very small amounts at a time? Even if you just lightly cook just the meat, perhaps oin the microwave oven for a few seconds and if that stays down, gradually introduce fully raw. This might make a difference. If he in fact eats it when it is fully raw means he is not objecting to be fed this way. I'm sorry if I keep going on about meat for dogs, but I am so against feeding commercial processed foods. Imagine yourself eating processed food day in and day out. I house sat my cousin's mini schnauzer over the holidays and a bag of Eukanuba was brought with him. I had mentioned to my cousin how I feed and he said it was OK to feed Harry the same if I wanted to. After seeing what my boys were fed, he flatly refused to eat until he got the same lol.
  10. I don't understand. You say you are trying to reduce his weight, and besides reducing his calorie intake, walking is probably the next best thing, then why are you considering buying a stroller. Not doing your pup any good.
  11. Only because Pointeeblab said he needs meat now I am even more confuzzled I can't give him raw meat and if he doesn't need cooked meat, I will just keep doing what I am doing minus the rice and pasta and just give him a handful of kibble everyday mixed with vegies to fill him up. There is meat in kibble. He needs protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals etc. I suggest you research and feed a balanced raw diet (which you say your dog vomits) or the best quality kibble you can afford. Several of the super premium kibbles do a "light" or "diet" version. Artemis is one. Then when the weight is off, don't feed too much. If you see him putting it on again you need to reduce the quantity fed. As dogs mature, like us their metabolisms drop. A mature dog doesn't need as much food as a growing pup. Watch what he gets outside of meals too - treats and snacks can be a big source of weight gain for dogs. A pug has a small stomach.. probably no more than half cup of anything in an entire day is enough.. the fact that they will gorge doesn't mean they need to eat more. Most of the so called 'Meat' in kibble is meat meal, or meat flavours. Again, i repeat myself. A dog needs MEAT, and the best way to feed it is raw as you said.
  12. Make sure he gets protein. His diet should consist mainly of meat. If you change him to a diet of mostly veges he may become ill. Lean raw meat and meaty bones should make up the majority of his diet with some veges added. That's exactly what I am about to say. Dogs are not by nature creatures that thrive on veggies. They are MEAT eaters. I also give my dogs veggies, but not as the staple. They get them as an extra to their meat and bone meals. Everything is served raw, even the veggies. On very rare occasions they may have cooked veggies from the table, but I prepare for them their lot in the kitchen food processor. Other than when you feed the weight control kibble, which, by the way, I have no faith in, does he get to eat next to the veggies?
  13. Couldn't agree with you more. Dogs need to chew, and my two miniature schnauzers have all their bones as a whole and have absolutely no problem. In fact, you can see the delight on their faces when they crunch up those bones lol.
  14. Chicken necks are not enough variety. They are mainly bone and the dog needs meat. I feed the bone part of the meal in the morning and in the afternoon, I give a variety of meats that I buy from my own butcher. As long as you select the leaner meats, as well as kangaroo and perhaps goat, you can't go wrong. Putting her on the BARF diet is probably not a bad idea either, but you need to read up and study. It's not as hard as you think. I feed vegetables raw in a mix that I put through my food processor. These include a small amount of broccoli, beetroot, zuchinni, carrot, a small amount of cabbage and cauliflour. I microwave sweet potato and cut into pieces and mix through the shredded vegetables. I make up a very large bowl full and portion this out into containers and freeze. The dogs love it. Fruit tends to have a bit too much sugar, so could add to the weight problem.
  15. Since you are already giving her some raw as in the chicken necks, why don't you consider a full raw diet? I have just googled Science Diet Light ingredients and you would be very surprised what is in it. Yuk. The first is ground whole grain corn. Dogs need meat. There doesn't seem to be any meat in this diet, only meat by products and meat flavours. Give her what a dog needs. You will be surprised just how small a quantity you need to feed and the poops will be small because the body utilises what is being fed. I'll bet her poops are big. There are many raw feeding groups where you can go for advice.
  16. Thanks for confirming and reinforcing what I suspected.
  17. Personally, I would walk away. If this breeder is supposed to be a registered breeder, then why in the world is she asking for, even though it is a lesser amount, for a pup that does not fall into the standard, and is way off the mark. I wouldn't buy into anything that could potentially pose a problem later on. Think of the heartache this could cause for the children. Would you prefer these pups be PTS simply because of their colour? White boxers are an undesireable but natural result of some boxer matings. Some people are attracted to them and while they may not be shown and will be prone to skin cancer, not all of them have other health issues. It's no different to parti-colour poodles. They happen in solid litters and some people find them attractive. What's a disqualification in the show ring doesn't mean a dog can't be a great pet. They're still Boxers. I thought they could be registered. Parti poodles can be. No I didn't say that, but by the same token, I wouldn't be buying into something like this. I walked away from a puppy that had been ordered, and I had waited over 12 months for because the whole litter had undershot bite, even from champion stock. The choice was mine, and after consulting with my vet before taking the pup, she said leave it. If it had been only one puppy, there was not such a problem, but the whole litter!!!!! I am the sort of person, and that is my perogative to not knowingly buy into a potential problem.

  19. I may be wrong here but I thought that responsible breeders euthansed white boxer puppies at birth because of their increased risk of developing cancers at a young age. I know they cannot be registered and was under the impression that it was not acceptable for them to be sold either. Are they offering to give you the puppy or are you expected to pay for it? If you are paying, what health guarantee are they providing? As to the age, unless the 5 month old has been extensively socialised I would not consider it. I also thought that white boxers were a no no. Am I correct in thinking that they may be deaf and blind? Not sure, but I seem to recall reading that this may be possible.
  20. I would take her to a vet asap. I took my boy to my regular vet because of dry eye, which just wouldn't improve and in the end he too went to Animal Eye Care in Malvern, because after months of treatment he developed corneal ulcers. He subsequently lost one of his eyes and the other is still being treated with drops, which will be an ongoing thing for the rest of his life. Sometimes it needs a specialist to give the proper diagnosis and care.
  21. My 12 year old mini schnauzer also had a very bad attack of pancreatitis which I too suspect was brought on by predisonal because of schnauzer bumps. I always feed them with very low fat foods, but I give them raw. My regular vet advised to put him on the commercial diet foods such as Royal Canin or Hills, especially made for pancreatic sufferers. I was not impressed with her suggestion and took him to a homeopthic vet who modified his diet slightly and also put him on digestive enzymes because he was eating very well, but losing condition. He looks great now, having regained some body mass.
  22. We have two mini schnauzers, one 12 yrs old and the other 2 yrs old. The younger boy also barks at small kids, but I have now taken to saying, before he even thinks about it 'no bark' and he doesn't. There are times that I feel he would, if I didn't give the command, but there are other times that he just ignores the kids and walks by them. The funny thing is that I have 4 grandchildren, all toddlers, and he used to bark at them too, but now he seems to have gotten used to the idea of having them around. I think it just takes time for them to mature and realise that the kids are AOK, and he enjoys playing with them when they come to visit.
  23. I'm so happy that you do eventually scrutinize the potential buyers, and that's the way it should be. In the long run, if more 'breeders' did this there would be less unwanted dogs around for re homing. It would seem that there are some out there looking only for the dollar, and I am dead against that. As I said in my previous post about 1 puppy advertised and then there were more. This pup was advertised on DOL. Obviously they just wanted to move the pups asap, and on 'phone contact I wasn't even asked if I knew how to care for a miniature schnauzer. I have met a couple of people who have bought a puppy from this breeder and the after sales service, so to speak has been lacking. I would expect a breeder to at least have an ongoing interest in the puppy sold if the buyer so wishes. If I were interested in having a BC pup, you would be one of the first breeders I would contact.
