  1. River 94.9 radio seems to serve the Ipswich area. Phone numbers: Office (07) 3813 1000 Studio (07) 3813 1949 http://www.river949.com.au/
  2. Yes. Some time ago, I talked to a person who worked the phones & on reception for a large welfare shelter. She said one of the most common requests, was someone wanting to surrender their dog because the wife/partner had become pregnant. When the shelter person asked. 'Has your dog ever behaved in any way that would give you cause for worry?', the answer was invariably, 'No, but we don't want to take any chances!'. There's actually classes run by the Brisbane City Council to help people deal with keeping their pet while being pregnant & having a new baby. AWL Qld also has similar training classes and material. Re going overseas & leaving pets behind. When I adopted our puss from the U of Q Adoption Program, there was a section on their initial screening which asked about residency status in Australia.
  3. You're right. Boofy's owner really beat himself up for not taking Boofy to be desexed at the vet who cares for his racing greys. Good on you for highlighting the need for care re anaesthesia.
  4. Yes, all the neighbours here love the greys next door. One ex-racer, saved from being PTS for being too slow, was the all-time favourite. Boofy, by name....gorgeous by nature. While his 'dad' was at work, we neighbours would call Boofy to the fence for a pat or two. He'd come padding out to get attention. Then he'd lean right down, so our little tibbie, Angel, could give him a kiss. Angel adored Boofy (who wouldn't!). Tragically, Boofy died, while under anaesthetic to be desexed. He was only 2 years old. His owner & all the neighbours were devastated. Most of all, for weeks afterwards, little Angel would go up to the fence & wait and wait for Boofy to come. Angel later became a small dog tester for GAP. Every time a big grey was brought up to be tested with her, her eyes would light up, 'Is this Boofy come back?' Rescued greyhounds make the best neighbours.
  5. In addition to play dates, the Brisbane Council have doggie afternoons out at various dog parks, called K9 Capers. If you're at Wooloowin, the ones at Boondall & The Gap wouldn't be all that far away. More K-9 Caper Events in Brisbane off-leash dog parks, from April to June. Activities, games, competitions, stalls. Games start from 1.30 p.m. Boondall Sunday 29 May Sunnybank Hills Sunday 5 June The Gap Sunday 26 June. Full details, including location of these dog parks: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-...apers/index.htm
  6. They should also interview people who are neighbours to people who've adopted ex-racing greyhounds...like us. Greys not only make wonderful pets but they are the loveliest dogs to have living next door. Affectionate, not rabble rousers, cruisy & calm (they only go all out, when they have a sprint)....with the most beautiful eyes!!!! I'd like to see greys used more for pet therapy in nursing homes (their height & calm make them perfect). Also, if someone will look to the daily walks & bathing, mature aged greys are wonderful pets for the elderly.
  7. Lovely pic of a hard-working dog on that website link. Thanks!
  8. Yes, we went to that Gap one, couple of years back. The dogs love going to k9 capers.
  9. Thank you. I'll be recommending that.
  10. And I couldn't agree more with this.
  11. Yay, PA, another vote for the Cardigan Corgi as a great townhouse dog! Here's an example,...tho' this girl might better make that rare creature...an only dog in such a situation. So probably not quite for the OP's situation, but she shows why the CC is a quiet achiever & a gem as a pet. (Yes, this is coming from a Tibbie tragic ) http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/welsh-corgi-cardigan.asp
  12. We owned a Cardigan Corgi when we were kids & I'd back your description of the breed, as a great pet in a townhouse. Our Biddy was all round wonderful. A Cardigan Corgi is superb laid- back housedog, sensible & clean. But equally wonderful to take out anywhere. Biddy was even brilliant being taken out on the boat. Once again, her sensible, laidback temperament made her perfect in that situation. A good Cardigan from a good breeder, is one of the most versatile dogs, in a compact size.
  13. I saw little Gemma on the TV news last night. Bless Rockhampton hospital, it allowed Gemma to be brought in & popped onto her owner's bed. She's a sweet-heart & pretty as a picture. The elderly lady repeated what she'd said to Gemma, 'You'll have to get help for mummy, darling!'. And darling did, of course.
  14. Do they mean next Saturday? Gee, not much time left, have we. Bless the atheists.....they mightn't believe in a god but they believe in helping dogs.
  15. Bit O/T, but esky owns the most beautiful, precious pekes. I keep a photo on my desktop, that she posted a long time back. If there was a count taken on numbers of Ooooohs & Aaaaaahs for my various desktop photos, esky's Peke Pic would get first place. I hope it's all sorted.
  16. I hope Gemma gets a dog hero medal as big as she is....& made of solid gold.
  17. I'm so glad that westiemum's senior lad responded so well to the herbs. I agree with dogmad, that this is something we could well know about. I can understand how westie feels when she got help that made such a difference. When my tib girl had a puzzling gastro problem, the help & tips I got were brilliant. And dogmad gave me one of the best tips of all. I now half support the sweet potato industry in Australia. And have a doggie whose problem has gone. Yes, DOLers are tops.
  18. Lindainfa, those photos with white & without are both lovely. I agree with the folk who've said whether the white fades or not, it's no problem for a pedigree dog, sound in health & temperament...as a pet. I also agree that even if something 'cosmetic' survives into adulthood, it can become a loveable, unique feature of a dog. Not colour, but a bump on the skull! Our 'Swedish' tibbie girl has a distinct small bump on her head. When showed, judges often mentioned it. But, in her after-life as a pet, it makes her look like one of those cupie dolls that had a little bump on their heads. Cute as a button.
  19. That's a lovely story. Not only is that family thoughtful, but they're on to something! The thought & love & care that goes into breeding/raising puppies is priceless. It sets the pup's development on a strong base for a great adult dog. What a nice way to say 'Thank you!'....chocs & flowers.
  20. I see the problems been fixed now. But I'll answer this question anyway. Yes, in our senior tibbie girl who was so close to our other younger tibbie (who was the leader). The younger one suddenly & tragically died (side effects from a medication for non-life threatening condition). The senior girl then behaved very much like this Dane. She lay watching the side gate, which had been the last place she'd seen her 'sister's' body go out. When taken to the vet, she would lie looking under the door into the waiting room, expecting her 'sister' to come in, too. After a while, she started howling....more like 'keening'....whenever she was home alone.
  21. Brisbane ABC TV News put a 'scattering' of shots taken at the MPW here. First quick 'flash' was of 3 happy small dogs in a group....& they looked like Tibbies! Later we had friends phoning up to tell us they'd seen them on the News. Everyone was breed-spotting on the television! I think these events are great places to highlight the various breeds, especially the less common ones.
  22. Agree. I see the same thing when we take our dogs to the Brisbane Council's K-9 activities here. And I love the way people with their dogs just automatically talk to other people with their dogs. You don't see that at dogless outdoor events.
  23. I have 2 small dogs. So I just soak their bedding in a large bucket of hot water with eucalyptus wash. Then put on the line to dry in the fresh air. I don't use the washing machine at all. BUT I might have to change that, if I owned larger dogs with bulkier bedding. Then, I'd be tempted to buy a second-hand twin tub as indigirl did.
  24. I have everything crossed here that it's possible to cross.
  25. I'm so glad Arnie got better. Those symptoms would scare me. I had no idea there was a 'bloody' gastro condition like this.
