  1. We feed our dog dinner leftovers mixed with dry food. Can food makes him have big mushy wet poo.
  2. A couple of years back I was researching a breed . I noticed by the clubs website photos, that for almost all the events/show for this breed the same people attended and almost always the same breeders won. I am not a breeder/show person so I don't know if this is normal or not.
  3. +2 My mini Schnauzer showed since of dominance at a very young age (but never as bad as your pup with that attitude against the children) he was desexed at six months but he is still the same. Sometimes I still have to remind him that I am the boss. I have three children and he used to/ and sometimes still trys to be above the youngest (7 year old turning 8) in the pack. My dog is almost 9 years old. He sees my husband as 1st , me 2nd, older boys 3rd in the pack. I had to teach my youngest boy to tell him what to do. And I had to teach him to be more assertive and say No! loudly if Mambo was jumping on him or trying to take his food. I also had to make sure Mambo understood that he was last in the pack. I would grawl at him if he ever tied anything with my youngest. I use to get my son to take the dogs plate away from him under my supervison (right over him, watching) just so he will get the massage that youngest child is above him. But my youngest also had to tell him what to do (sit, come, No!) Otherwise the dog might think "yeh! let him get away with it but only when mums around". I think he got the massage. So far so good. You can't allow him to act like that with the children. And avoiding it is not teaching him not to do it. I am no expert please don't try my techniques as it might not be the right thing for your dog. If my dog was doing the things your pup is doing, I would call an expert trainer or find him another home with someone that can handle him and teach him.
  4. Perth_girl - just keep trying for a pup from a breeder. I'm sure you will get what you want, just keep looking. Maybe contact the breeds club. Sometimes they have a list of breeders that they recommend (that have puppies). You can ask them for a price range to have an idea.
  5. Hi, I am new to this forum. I don't think I have ever laughed so much (out loud) from reading threads in a forum as I have in this one. I mean it in a good way.
  6. Though he shouldn't be feeling ripped off as it wasn't your fault anyway.
  7. Maybe he feels ripped off/sad and doesn't think you would give him back the money for the pup anyway, so he thinks he may not get the papers either, so he is asking for at least the reimbursment for the papers.
  8. As your average pet owner I think it would be good to see more reputable breeders advertise in newspapers/trading post. As from my experience that’s the first place I looked at when I was 12 years old in the 80's when we purchased a Collie. I didn’t know any better, I thought that was the only place to find a puppy. The breeder was a lovely lady, very helpful. I chose the pup. She gave us feeding info and a photo copy of a pedigree full of champions, there were so many generation. She also gave us a blue paper that she said we needed to put the dogs name on and our name and address and pay $10 and send it in the post back to the Canine council. My sister and I did send this through the post but never got anything back we probably didn’t do it right. The dog had one testicle and had a hearing problem. This didn’t mean anything to us he was our beloved pet. He was a great dog overall and lived to 9 years old. Dog #2 Purchased from an ad in the trading post this time (this time I was in my twenties). Called the breeder went over to visit. We were to enter through the garage where the garage was converted to a living area and the pups were brought in bouncing happily and happy to greet us. Very clean and brushed pups. (I didn’t realise, full of fleas until I got home with the chosen pup). The breeder showed us pictures of the champions and said their son was showing them now. I had a strange feeling thinking why the pups were brought to us instead of us going to see them in their living area which was not inside there home. This breed being an inside dog. This dog was never able to be house trained (toilet trained). I always thought it might have been the environment that she might have been kept in for the first 12 weeks of her life. I could be wrong. I was a bit of a nightmare. She never had any health issues and she was desexed. Dog #3 Our schnauzer that we have now, yes this was a BYB purchase from the trading post. Called, went to visit. All the dogs, two adults and pups lived inside a house with a doggie door access to the yard. I said, how do you keep the house so clean? he said the pups follow the parents and they learn to go toilet outside. We had no problem toilet training him. He is desexed. He is a very healthy dog no complaints so far he is know almost 9 years old. My point being that more reputable breeders should advertise then common average pet buyers might get better educated quicker and then learn to expect a high standard (This doesn't mean all dogs must live inside to be of high standard) when purchasing a new pet instead of going through bad experiences buying from some not so good registered breeders and then settling for a pet from a BYB, who really looks like they care and love their dogs. My next family addition will be from a reputable breeder who really cares about their dogs. I am a recent member to this forum and appreciate learning so much just from reading your responses.
  9. I would buy from a breeder that advertiesd in the trading post but I would still be very careful who I buy from.
  10. not always, sometimes there aren't show homes available, so the stunning show prospect is placed into a pet home on limited rego. Plenty of stories here on DOL telling about the wonderful pet who would have made a stunning show dog. So, the breeder can't change a pet placed(stunning show prospect) on limited register to Main register if both owner and breeder agree? Sorry if this is a dum question? I don't show or breed. Dedicated pet owner only.
  11. We have 3 boys one almost 12,10 and almost 8 year old. We also have 1 Schnauzer boy and I use to have my beautiful baby Yorkie but she is missing (someone has her or she is dead). I remember looking at her and knowing that she knew how much I loved her. I was hers and she was mine. I love my human children dearly but the love that you can have with a dog comes close to me.
  12. One parramatta Pet shop had one dog at $1200. Often when we go past the pet shop my boys run in to see the rabbits and guinea pigs, so I often get to hear customers asking about the price of the dogs (Often the pice has been $1000). I often feel like telling them to go to a breeder, for the same price, at least they will know exactly what they are getting. Poor puppies stuck in those glass shelves for weeks.
  13. My local Pet shop is charging close to breeders prices on some breeds. Unless it's a real mixed breed looking dog. This is why I wonder how they seem to know the going price of the breeds and the avarage person looking to buy from a proper breeder has such a hard time finding this information.
  14. Just because someone knows the “right things” to say doesn’t mean it’s a good home. I would imagine that alot of puppy farms would know the exact things to say/and have the money to pay whatever the price may be, just so they can get a dog to breed from.
  15. No particular order. Pembroke Welsh Corgi Yorkshire Terrier Miniture Schnauzer Golden Retriever AustralianSilky Terrier Cardigan Welsh Corgi Rough Collie British Bulldog Border Collie West highland White Terrier
  16. Thank you for responding. It's been helpful to see all the opinions and experiences you have posted. I hope to find the right breeder one day.
  17. Was the breeder you spoke to registered? Yes, the breeder is registered.
  18. I feel like a gossip now, telling you what she said about other breeders' price structure. I should have left that out. I was more interested to know if it was common for breeders to sell pups at different prices for Show or Pet and up the price depending on how many people wanted those pups at that time. Thank you for your responses. I will take my time and speak to other breeders. I want to get my baby from someone who I know really cares for the breed. So I get the feeling it’s going to take a while. Thank you again.
  19. I spoke to a breeder recently who said that she wouldn’t have a price on a puppy until the pups were older and whether it was for pet or show the price would be different. She said that breeders that priced all pups the same are breeding for money. Then she said that the price would also depend on demand. That if more people wanted the pups then it might go up $500 more than she said previously because of demand. She asked me what my budget was? I supposed it was to see if I had any idea how much I am looking to spend on the breed in question. Is this common?
  20. Unless the rescue know the breeds or breed mixes they rehome to a t I think you'd be better buying from a breeder or a breed specific rescue - who knows the nuances of the breed(s) they rehome. fwiw some LGD breeds fulfill your requirements but I would be sourcing such dogs from a reputable breeder or a LGD specialised rescue - L:) I agree with lilli.
  21. If its the same dog, I saw this dog there over three weeks ago. 4-5 weeks ago there was three pups (Dalmatian). It's sad that these dogs have to stay in such a tiny space for so many weeks. I think toilet training would be very hard for pup and new owner.
  22. I agree, about the same for my dog.
  23. I had a Rough Collie growing up he was wonderful. We were 4 girls from 14 year to 6 and one boy aged 4 years. my older sister and I use to brush him and bath him, that was our job. Twice we took him to our local school pet show and he won Best groomed Dog ribbon. We each had a special connection to him. only thing is that larger breeds usually live up to 9 - 10 years . Our Collie passed at age 8. So when the one year old child is 8 or 9 years old the dog will most likely be on his death bed.
