Fussy Dogs - My Thought Ponder For The Day
halfthewords replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
2 of ours will eat anything that comes in their direction (and I mean anything, even cat poop ). I used to have huge problems with Carl and Mischa both being exceedingly fussy, to the point where they would sometimes not eat for a day or two (I just took the food away if uneaten). Carl would only eat kangaroo mince and even then it wasn't ever certain! Mischa was eating something different each meal and it was driving me up the wall... Until I cut their food intake drastically. They were eating way too much. Instant cure for fussiness! :D They're both happily eating Nature's gift, BARF patties, Royal Canin and Pro Plan at present, as well as Greenies for treats, which they wouldn't touch before. -
All 4 of our dogs eat something different, depending. Carl is on Science Diet R/D at the moment (got a little porky) which has done the trick as far as getting him to shed some kgs, and he gets BARF or raw kangaroo meat for breakfast, occasionally a bone or chicken drumstick. Mischa has always been a fussy eater when it comes to dry food, so she gets Nature's Gift in the morning (or some raw meat). She gets the Royal Canin Mini senior food, she loves it! Jag eats Wellness as that's what we have large bags of laying around at the moment. Cleo was on Earthborn but we switched her back to Wellness; her and Jag will eat anything and everything. The cat eats Science Diet and Wellness.

One Of The Consequences Of Sleeping With Dogs.
halfthewords replied to Kirislin's topic in General Dog Discussion
No poop in my bed... But only Carl sleeps in my bed, and he's so clean he never needs a bath. Vomit is another story - he has been sick maybe three times in the last five years. -
I hate the cliche names on Staffords - Ruby, Molly, Diesel, Bella, Max, etc. I just generally hate overused names like Oscar, Charlie, Lucy, Daisy, Angel, Coco, Roxy.
-
One of mine is called Carl. We always get questions about it  He has such a serious, human-looking face. though, it suits him. (He was given the name at the shelter)
-
Poor girl Hopefully they're reunited soon. The being too small bit is bogus - my adult min pin is 3 kgs and had her microchip put in at 8 weeks when she was under 1kg! Rubbish
-
Have had problems in the past with our full-coated Bichon, fleas and Advantix in the past, so he gets a Comfortis tab a probably once every 3 months and he's come pretty good The other 3 dogs (and cat, treated with advantage or frontline) are flea-free and seem to be fine with Advantix...
-
Carl is excellent with other dogs, even the really forward ones who want to jump all over him, so I generally am fine with him being approached as long as the other dog doesn't have raised hackles and a tail standing straight up, etc. Mischa on the other hand, being only 3kgs, I just either keep her right next to me or pick her up. Isn't worth it. She's 10 and it only takes one snap from another dog to cause serious problems, so I'm not even willing to risk it most of the time. Luckily she doesn't care about other dogs apart from Carl either way

4 dogs between 4 adults here. Two are 'mine', one is mum's, and the other belongs to my sister. They range in age between 3.5 years and 10. It's a bit of a madhouse at times in addition to the cat and the parrot, but we manage. I don't think I personally could cope with more than 2. Carl and Mischa are super low maintenance as is!

I ran into a mother and son who owned one at a dog day out in Sydney about a year and a half ago... Owning two Miniature Pinschers myself, I thought that's what it was, and a pup at that, but only to find out it was a full-grown Prague Ratter! I had no idea there were dogs smaller than Min Pins  Mischa wasn't amused!

Leaving Dogs Tethered Outside The Supermarket
halfthewords replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
For those that do this, please consider that persons with assistance dogs might be forced to either wait until you come out or run the gauntlet and hope that dog right outside the door is well tethered and not DA. It could be frightening for a vision impaired person with their guide dog to suddenly find themselves within reach of another dog while exiting the building. Exactly, it affects more than just the owner and the dog. There could be small children who are scared of dogs (or adults who are scared of dogs!), toddlers who don't need a dog to jump on them or rush at them, or anything. It's just irresponsible and selfish. Thanks for jumping down my throat! When I say 'right outside,' I mean tethered to a tree on the pathway, well away from the door and with at least 5 metres to spare if someone needs to get through! My dog is excellently behaved in any case, and is certainly not DA. He is not friendly with people he doesn't know, and he would never approach someone. He just doesn't care! And if it's tying him up for a couple of minutes vs leaving him in the car, I know what choice I'm making. But what if someone is walking their DA dog & your dog approaches it, or a young child runs up to it & pulls it's ears, or tries to sit on it? I have lost count of the number of times, i have stopped a child approaching a tethered dog & told their parents, they should never let their child approach a strange dog. If your dog does bite a child who hassles them, then your dog will be either PTS, or declared dangerous. Is it really worth the risk? As I said, he isn't interested - doesn't react to or listen to anyone other than me. Unless someone was actively trying to undo his lead and steal him. And as I said, I've tied him up a grand total of twice in the 5 years I've owned him. I don't make a habit of it; it was only when the other option was leaving him in the car. Generally I never leave any of my dogs tied up outside the shop, and especially not while I'm inside getting groceries! Ducking into a shop where I still had full view of him was unnerving enough. -

Leaving Dogs Tethered Outside The Supermarket

I've done it twice in my life, both times last year. First when I had to take a bunch of books back to uni and I had Carl with me. It was way too hot to leave him in the car, so I tied him up outside (through glass doors, within my sight) while I put the books in the chute. The second time was when I tied him right outside the door of an IGA and went inside for <2 mins to get a drink. I kept sticking my head outside to make sure he was still there. Carl would bark his head off if someone tried to untether him, anyway. I won't be doing it again! -
It depends, really. Carl has always slept on my bed since I've had him (5 years) but he seems to be wanting to sleep under my bed and in his own under the desk of late. Maybe the hot weather? I've had to kick him off a few times to get comfortable and now he seems content to just sleep wherever. I did try calling to him last night for him to jump up but he wouldn't have it! Mischa used to sleep in my bed (winter only), then she slept in a donut bed on the floor for the last few years. Since having one or two accidents, she now sleeps outside my door in a bed, right next to the other Min Pin. :) Jag sleeps with my mum, usually. On the bed, of course! When she's away, he sleeps in my room, usually on the bed, though I have to kick him off as well. Rory used to sleep on my bed and current kitten now sleeps in a crate.

What Is The Most Annoying Thing Your Dogs Do?
halfthewords replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Jag barks at nothing a few times a day, shoves his head on your foot if you aren't patting him while sitting on the couch, jumps up if you're reading newspaper/drinking tea/eating with a plate in your hands, whinges and cries at 5am to be fed, scratches on doors to be let in, goes under the bed and refuses to come out when it's time for the last pee before bed, steals food out of the bin, conveniently forgets his own name at the park when he feels like it... Carl jumps up on the bed when he thinks I'm asleep when I've told him to stay off (and he knows), gets a very wounded look when told no for any reason, has to be on top of me when sitting on the couch or in bed, pants in hot weather when I'm trying to sleep... Mischa barks like a hellhound even when people she knows come in the house, licks continuously after getting a pat or scratch as 'thanks', takes forever and a day to eat her dinner, harasses Jag if he's trying to play with Carl or have a roll on the floor... -
Second Miniature Poodle or Papillion. There was a Pap at my agility club and he was just stunning to watch (and a little stubborn )
-
100!! I got shown how to do it from the vet and now I express Carl's as needed. Saving myself a lot of money! He needs to be done once a month or so I suggest going somewhere else!
-
I've been using Sentinel and Interceptor for years, but I'm thinking of dropping back to worming once every 3 months and doing heartworm monthly instead. It really does feel like overkill.
-
I generally almost always feed mine after a walk, unless I'm planning to go for one late, like 9PM with my sister or a friend. I always walk them in the mornings
-
I tried Wellness and it made him sick. He currently has Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream but the kibble size is a bit large for a small dog IMO and I would like something I don't have to order online and is available at the pet store. Our other three dogs (and the kitten) are on Wellness, haven't had any problems. Carl in particular likes it, the other two are walking garbage cans and will eat anything. But we have had a few customer complaints at work about it making the dog sick on either end
-
I finally got sick of Mischa turning her nose up at every raw food I put in front of her, so as a last resort, tried Wellness. She picked at it, if she was hungry enough. Then I bought some Royal Canin Mini mature adult and she LOVES it the biscuits are the perfect size for her. She's doing great on it and BARF/VAN in the evenings.

Learning To Groom Your Own Dog
halfthewords replied to moosepup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, it'll sure as heck save you money in the future if you decide you want to do them yourself! I do Carl (terrier x) and Jag (Bichon) at home every 6-8 weeks, or whenever their hair starts bugging me. I bought a Wahl set a few years ago, and then switched to Andis ACG two-speed earlier this year. I'm lucky in that I learned to do a decent clip on Carl, and he happily rolls over onto his back to let me clip his legs/belly and is very pliable. I do a #10 all over on them both, apart from tails/face. -
Our one year old cat passed away from T-cell lymphoma and we just got his ashes back yesterday. They came back in a lovely (completely sealed, to my annoyance) brown box with a decoration and a nameplate. My mother and sister want nothing to do with the remains, but I keep them by my bed, because Rory used to sleep at the foot of my bed. It's a comfort thing, and everyone is different.
-
AM and PM for everyone here, usually drumsticks/wings in the morning and mince at night. Depending on what time I get up, breakfast can be before or after exercise. Dinner is always after a walk.
-
Carl gets a chicken wing or drumstick in the morning, and then a handful of roo mince and kibble (Wellness) at night. Inc supplements. Mischa is entering her twilight years and has always been difficult to feed, so it changes day to day. She generally has a couple spoonfuls of canned food (Nature's gift or nutro, or lasagne if we have any) and a small cup of kibble (Royal Canin or Wellness) and at night she either gets a dentastix and a greenie or a pegetable, or two chicken necks. During colder months she won't eat outside so she just eats whatever she wants. It's not unusual for me to sit around trying to handfeed her. She loses condition very easily. Jag gets a chicken wing or drumstick AM and a bowl of Wellness kibble at night. Least fussy dog ever!
