  1. jodee, alot of vets offer vascectomy steralisation now, so hormone levels remain the same in the dog but obviously it wont be able to sire pups.. afterwards full desexing/castration could be done when the dog has completly finished growing if you wanted ..just another thing to think about. ime sure your vet can give you the run down.
  2. The one i have is called, Glucosamine Chondroitin Joint Food../brand name is, Nutra-Life, i got it at a health food store in the sports suppliments section, i got a 1kg tub i cant remember how much but it was pretty expensive (lol for me anyway)..it contains Potassium Glucosamine Sulphate Chondroitin Sulphate Vitamin C Citrus Bioflavonoids Zinc Manganese Copper I have read somewhere that to much Zinc isnt good for dogs or something,(or was that iodine? lol brains shutting down) but there is only 2mg per teaspoon and i havnt seen any ill affects and my dogs have been on it everyday for a year.
  3. my dogs weigh between 30 and 40 kg and i give them 1 flat teaspoon for the 30 kg dog, a rounded teaspoon for the middle dog and a heaped teaspoon for the 40kg dog..in a bit of cold milk, thats a glucosamine and chondroitin mix,not pure glucosamine. theres probably about 250mg of straight glucosamine per metric teaspoon in the mix that i use,so its not really all that much for my dogs but it works well for Sirs old injuries.,and more of a preventative thing and joint support food for the others. i came to those measurements because the tub says (for people) not to exceed 6 servings Daily(30g) i have 4 so the dogs get 1.
  4. All of my dogs and i take glucosamine in milk its helped Sir tremendously with his back and shoulder injuries, and helps me with my joints as i do a lot of heavy repeditive lifting for work..
  5. Anyone know if you can get Canidae(sp) in Australia ?,its sposed to be a good kibble food.been looking but not much luck finding out..
  6. I mix and match kibble all sorts, but mostly Eukanuba, even the good old Good O's get a chompin now and again,...... raw stuff mostly, kibble for crunchies.
  7. Thats not a real lot of food for an active dog maby split the meal up into two meals to give the metabolism a boost ?sure she's not getting a heap of treats throughout the day aswell I left one of my dogs with my parents for a few weeks a while ago and gave strict instructions about the meal, almost turned into a barrell she only had *one meal a day* but also some vegemite toast in the morning,a sandwich at lunch,a bit of pasta here and their, a few bickies ect ,Lol ended up almost 4 big meals a day! Edit:cause i forgot the spacebar
  8. How do you get the dogs used to the noise of the dremmel tool? and for those that clip, what style of nail clippers do you all use? i use the pliers style one, love it,but theres some kind of swivel thing that sticks out on one side near the blades, ime guessing its some kind of cutting guide never figured it out Lol if anyone knows what that is and how to use it ..ide love to know .
  9. I feed raw roo and beef blend probably 50/50(buy it in a packet),no complaints. Maby mix beef with roo meat if the Ridgy finds the taste of roo too strong.. and gradually take out less and less beef , might get used to it :p
  10. EW I think she (the author) is talking about Malignant cancer of the prostate, over Benigne prostate cancer, and a higher rate of the Malignant (the killer) cancer apearing in castrated dogs with prostate cancer, thats how i read it anyways. Ed: cause i could'nt spell prostate/prostrate  ;)
  11. I hold the same thoughts, although alot of people couldnt manage an entire male dog,i never had a problem with 'natural' male dog behaviour with unaltered hormone levels.
  12. I got a few sampler greenies for my dogs to try a while ago, they turned their noses up at them, and wouldnt even give em a lick, which is prolly a good thing cause there bloody expensive treats...so if my dogs dont like em, i dont like em
  13. Lol...if you can get hold of an old car axel from the wreckers and bury that in the ground as a stake out... that works well.. could be permanent though .... seriously i reckon a star picket hammered down and capped is good and cheap...
  14. I take Glucosamine and Glutamine myself, as well as my older dog 7.5yrs for his old back and hip and shoulder and toe injuries its got him moving around like he was 5.5 again \ also check the toes and feet pads on the dog, as a broken /dislocated/stubbed toe or even toenail pressure if its to long will make a dog hobble around... i once found a piece of glass in my dogs toe pad and the flap of skin had almost covered back over it, so it was hard to spot, he was limping around the place(at a time when he had another shoulder injury) and it wasnt untill i touched the spot quite firmly that he decided to tell me where the problem was and i had to dig it out of hes foot. but yeah ive found the Glucosamine to work well too ETA: Doh Just re-read your first post ....so ime guessing the Vet did check out hes feet
  15. Ive never fed a chicken carcus, only necks, and sheep backs,i do have concerns about the sharp little needle bones on the side of the thigh ect, maby its unfounded no doubt they dissolve easly in the gut but its the swallowing and getting stuck in the side of the throat that i worry about, same with feeding raw whole fish (big ones, not little sardines ect).
  16. Its not set in stone its just tradition, that goes back hundreds of years probably even longer.. all because most pple are righties.
  17. get a cuetip dip it in Kero and wipe on the tick it will back out fall off and die...wether or not its a little bush tick or a paralysis tick or even a jungle tick get it off your dog . EDit: to ad i ripped this off the net for you cause i noticed you're in Melb... http://www.petdoctor.com.au/2005/05/23/a-f...-weather-pooch/ Kero's the best stuff i know for getting ticks off any animal including pple,i dont know if a lot of pple have a pyrethrum spray in there household but keros pretty common.
  18. Theres a chemical in chocalate called theobromine??i think its called thats like a poison to dogs when ingested,i think it varies on the amount because i know of dogs that have eaten a heap of chocky without any effects whatsoever, but ive also heard of dogs being poisoned by eating only a small amount .but anyway ime sure someone else knows more about it than i do. cheers:) ETA: after a quick google i read theres different levels of theobromine in different types of chocalate, and it supposedly effects dogs the same way as caffine effects people, so to much can cause gastric probs ect and in the extreme case cardiac arithmyia(sp)
  19. After the first 3 initial puppy shots its every 3 or so year boosters for them.if im sceptical about there immunity ill have a titre test done.
