That's insane. If that legislation did come in and I lived in that area I'd move. Someone in that council must really hate dogs.

First Obedience Class - Wouldn't Stop Barking!
flame ryder replied to Puppynovice's topic in Puppy Chat
Yes don't give up. Go back next week and try again. When the instructor said they ignore naughty dogs they probably didn't mean you personally, just when dogs are naughty bad behavior should be ignored. Even when you tell them off it's attention and some dogs thrive on any attention...good or bad. At the end of the class you should be able to have a quiet chat with the instructor, your dog should be quiet then as the others wont be around...or put him in the car. In my experience it is really annoying when an instructor focuses on one dog and owner and their problems for a lengthy period of time...the other dogs and handlers get bored standing around. The instructor was probably just trying to avoid this. -
Cleo Just Scared Me So Much!
flame ryder replied to dotdashdot's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh poor you. I hope Cleo recovers soon. On the bloat topic...I never knew bloat was a dog thing, I relate bloat to cows and sheep. What causes it in dogs? -
When I rang the vets I had all this info up on the screen right in front of me (about vetpath ect). I asked to talk to the actual vet rather than the receptionist and still got quoted the above prices. My vet still insists they need vacc every year. Yes I may consider another vet Steph but there are only 3 vet clinics in my hometown.
-
It does even out fairly well as a triennial thing. Still, 200 is a big whack. Even so the vets all recommend vaccinating EVERY year. So I start to get nervous when my dogs are way overdue and there is Parvo in the area. One does not know who to believe...the vets themselves or random people on a forum.
-
Yes 4 months later and I still have not found a vet that will titre test at a decent price. I did get slightly excited when I rang one vet and they quoted me $68...but then the bubble burst when they then added there would be a consult fee of $70 plus freight costs which brought it up to around the $200 mark. I officially give up! Will just get my dogs re-vaccinated as per usual

Hey all I'd just like to revive this post as I need to find a way that my dog can travel comfortably. He acts weird in the car, tries to hide, either under the seat or puts his head under my arm. Although he is not naughty I can see his distress. He loves going places and always jumps happily into the car in anticipation of going to one of his favourite places. I'm not quite sure how these hammocks/backseat buddys work...so does anyone have a pic? And what are they like for smaller dogs? Has anyone used the MotorPro brand? Do they easily slip off to be changed regularly from car to car or will I need to buy 2? And do they really have to take up the whole back seat? I want room for my son in the back too. And can the dog be restrained by his harness in one in case of an accident, or do they just sit/lay in them?
-
Oh? Where? :) ETA never mind did a search and found it. Thanks guys
-
Ah yes that's it. Back seat buddy. Thankyou I just googled it. Soooooooo anyone used one and how'd ya like it?
-
Hi everyone. Does any one know the proper name for the things that go in/on the back seat of the car and sort of stop the dog going under the seat? They are made of material and somehow hook over the back of the front seat. I hope someone knows what I mean. Tried doing a google search but a bit hard when I'm not sure of the proper name.

Fish ponds. They are never empty so never have to worry about them tipping water over ect

What Is Effective Voice Control?
flame ryder replied to silentchild's topic in General Dog Discussion
My previous dog had 99% perfect recall. She would turn on a dime, dust flying and come back to me. first call, every time. I was so proud of her. No dog I have had since has ever had such a perfect recall...good but not that good. And why only 99% I hear you ask...kangaroos were her undoing. She lost her brain when she'd spot the kangys. -
I have everything that snakes like...aviarys, chooks, ponds, bushy areas and piles of junk. Not much I can do. Just keep a close eye on the dogs and hope we get by another summer without seeing any jakey blakeys.

The news I just watched said it was a 'family pet' who was usually kept tied up on a chain hmmm

Dangers Of Vaccinating Small To Medium Dogs.
flame ryder replied to luvsdogs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm going from memory but I think the titre via Dr Jean Dodds is $85.00. Add onto that your Vet's fee for drawing the bloods (mine charges me about the standard consult fee) plus FedEx Courier fee (I use the economy service and from Australia to USA it is approx $80.00). So, if it is only for the titre, it would equate to around $225.00, not much under what you've been quoted - although depending on where you are, your FedEx fee might be less. I know my Vet does titres and I think the fee is around the $150.00 mark. Don't anyone quote me - I'd need to do a double check, but I think that's around the figure. Of course that wouldn't work for you ann21, given you're not exactly local. Could you PM me the ph number of your vet Erny because even a phone call may help me get the cost down at my vets. I can ask what labs they use ect and pass the info off to my vets. It may help ya never know...worth a try -
Dangers Of Vaccinating Small To Medium Dogs.
flame ryder replied to luvsdogs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Jed I am overseas and all the vaccs here have Lepto and parainfluenza added, so no choice there. Thanks Erny for the information. I managed to find a vet who titres (yay!) but at $260 AUD thereabouts for parvo and distemper so I will researc more to see if its cheaper via the US route. That's pretty similar to the prices I was quoted too. Yet if I just give the vaccination it will cost around $80 -

Alot of that info is American. Is it the same here? Is there any Aussie info? I too have trouble getting the vets to even understand what I want when I ask about titre testing and the cost is astronomical compared to straight vaccination...plus they'll probably charge me a double consult for the discussion as well. -
When Were You Convinced Your Dog Could Understand English?
flame ryder replied to Leah82's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think it's pretty impressive when your dog can not only understand spoken language but can understand our body language too. Like when you are sad and they know it and stay close. Or try looking at your dog with a blank expression...then smile and see your dogs tail wag...pretty special :) -
The Big Problem With Pit Bulls (in Usa)
flame ryder replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
Same thing happening here. Seems to be American bulldogs or American staffords cross with similar. I see at least 1 post a day on the FB sell sites. -
Don't remember this story or any Leo. But now you got me curious. For us who don't know ...can we please have a brief run down. Sounds interesting
-
If it's just a small run mainly for them to sleep, then I'd go pavers or cement. I have pavers in mine. If I didn't they would dig, dig, dig. Mud would be everywhere and it would be impossible to clean. When they were younger they used to piddle and poop in there and it got quite smelly, I used to hose and scrub it everyday. But now they are older they rarely pee or poop in there so I only need to hose it out occasionally. It's important to get the drainage right as we haven't in ours and there's always an annoying puddle I can't get rid of.

The vets I rang yesterday used Vetpath in WA and the 2nd vet I rang today used Gribbles and the price was similar. And yet both so darn expensive? Why is this so? Is there a hidden profit somewhere or what? Seems to be too many differences in prices which make me suspicious, if someone here said they only paid $60 then I too want a similar price. Same thing with micro chipping...I paid $75 but have heard others paid as little as $40. Tomorrow I will ring a vet over the border(in Vic)and see what they say. Perhaps we are just behind the times here in SA.
