  1. Well right now there isn't a rule about using Superlorin, some people think it's unfair because the boys aren't aware if bitches in season aren't around and can be calmer around other entire males (not that, that is always a problem). So depending on what kind of judge you get, they'll have a guess your dog is on superlorin based on ball size and maybe not award you. My boy isn't shown anymore so we don't really have to deal with that side of things but yes it is a taboo subject among many.
  2. People...especially show dog people are always interested in what shrinkage you get hahaha
  3. You'd probably want to contact them directly... http://www.peptech.com/HTML/Animal_Health/...in_general.html My boy is on his 2nd implant. You can get 6 or 12 month implants, it can last a bit longer than that, it's an individual thing. Most boys get nut shrinkage, how much is an individual case. In regards to implanting early I guess you'd be looking at things like the dog may not mature fully (body up), keeps the growth plates open longer etc. Also what are you expectations? Why are you looking at doing this, if it's temperament reasons then it may not sort those out. My boy is still a humper, still a bit dog agro and still a bit dominant....nothing really changed there. But he doesn't know when the bitch across the road is in heat which is super! I must say though during his 1st implant he didn't go straight into a hump, it would take longer to get to that level and his behaviour was calmer, the 2nd one either hasn't kicked in yet or isn't going to give us the same results. This was the ball shrinkage on my boy:
  4. My boy has been on a fish & kibble diet due to allergies for the last year, he has Salmon, Barramundi, Cod...whatever is on special....no issues here.
  5. We condition especially when we use a stain removing/whiteniing shampoo as it can dry out the coat and skin.
  6. My boy was like that as pup. I didn't see it as aggressive behaviour. It is in my mind inappropriate behaviour from a tough nut puppy (my opinion on my own dogs behaviour). I wouldn't put it down to tantrums, although my pup did have tantrums. Please don't just take the word of someone else, their dog could be completely different to yours but sounds similar. My boy if I may so politely say was an asshole puppy and as a 2.5 year old can still be a right little asshole and I'm pretty firm and consistent with my dogs. If you can, get your pup assessed by a Behaviourist, that way you can see what kinda temperament you're dealing with so you know how to bring the dog up, you find it challenging when the pup starts to really mature. If your boy is anything like mine you're going to need the extra support and help from a trainer and behaviourist.
  7. I don't trim whiskers but the dog will survive without them. Dogs do use whiskers and there are there for a reason, whether or not your dog will behave any differently is an individual thing. Some horses whose whiskers are trimmed will bang their chins on feed dishes etc. and some dogs whose whiskers are trimmed may not judge distances as well i.e. how close they are to walls and items when they're zooming around. If you wanted to learn more before deciding whether to trim or not you can read up at difference resources such as: http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Do-Dogs-Have...&id=2538451
  8. If you're nervious about clipping you could get some nail files for arylic nails and files your dogs nails, they tend to accept that a bit better as well I usually clip and then file as I have an allergic dog who itches and I don't want him doing it with sharp nails.
  9. I feel your pain Lilly, I don't really have any suggestions, I'm sure you've tried them all as have many of us allergic dog owners. The only thing that has worked for us so far has been Homeopathic treatment.
  10. We found if we used a conditioner it would help alot especially as we were using a strong shampoo for white coats. An oil with all 3 Omegas in it i.e. 3, 6 & 9 is ideal if you don't feel your dog is getting enough from its' diet.
  11. I guess it would come down to reading the ingrediants. I've used Eagle Pack canned foods to flavour kibble of a puppy before. I haven't used supermarket canned foods in many years, the last time I purchased any was Natures Gift which does smell pretty good.

That's interesting Shell, because that's not at all what is represented from photos from shows in America. On a whole the majority seem to be pretty fine compared to Australia. I've also known a few people who have gone to the Nationals and have made similar comments.

American v Euro, as Shell said Euro tends to be heavier, 'some' Euro Danes aren't recognisable to us here as Danes with massive builds, huge heads and flews etc. I personaly find alot of the American dogs to be really fine in bone.

hehehe it would depend at what stage of development the Dane was in. My 8 year old would have 4 to complete a meal if she had nothing else in it. (2 meals per day) My 2.5 year old boy would probably have 8 in one meal. On a Raw diet he would go through 3kgs of food per day. Puppies can put away alot of food i.e. 8 cups of kibble a day.

To give a definate we'd need to have a definate on where they originated from and unfortunately we don't have that. They have had different purposes such as Guarding, Pulling men off horse back in war time and wild board hunting.

QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Owner & Exihbitor (Well my other half is the Exhibitor hehehe) 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? Different schools of thought, some feel they go back the Egyptians (from Egyptian drawings) and some feel they go back to Assyrian war time. 3. How common is it in Australia? Low-Medium 4. What is the average lifespan? Maybe 7/8 years of age 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Generally they should be a gentle giant. Some lines may have left over prey drive from their hunting days. Some lines have aggression issues which people don't like to mention so make sure you meet the dogs from that line in different situations and ask around. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Perhaps 30 minutes although you could get away with 15 minutes depending on the dog. Puppy exercise is minimal and if the owner isn't an experienced Dane Owner they need to follow their breeders instructions. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes and No They're a BIG dog so if you're not prepared to train the dog well you're going to have issues. They're a deep pocket breed. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? In my opinion if pack structure is fine then yes not a problem. When researching the breed you'll see it said in some documentation that Danes are very people orientated and shouldn't be left for long period of times. A Dane should be able to cope like any other breed whilst its' owner is at work, if pack structure is in place then there should be no issues. This is not a breed to baby! 9. How much grooming is required? Not much, although they do shed and if you want less shedding then you would want to groom more. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? They will probably knock small kids over. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Wobblers Cardimyopathy Entropian Ectropian Glaucoma Ostiochronrritus Dissecans Megaosphagus Hip Dysplacia Allergic Skin Disease Other conditions that are not hereditary are: Gastric Tortion (Bloat) Epilepsy Autoimmune Disease Bone Cancer Allergic Skin Disease 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Xraying of the Hips and Elbows to be on the safe side (Results should be lower than 20 although I personaly think that is high), testing of the Thyroid. Heart check but that is only current on the day it was taken. Meet the parents to check out the temperments, ask around about Breeders, Dane people will say what they think.
  18. She actually does EXTREMELY well with out it... what is causing issues at the moment is the food trials and working out what she is allergic to... we normally NEVER have issues of this nature any more... and what we do normally get now is hives, which the cortisone has been totally ineffective for, which apparently is not uncommon (we trialled their use twice and I keep oral cortisone on hand for her bee / wasp allergies). I'm not totally against steroids and when they are bad I do use them, I use topical cream, dermotic, spray (Cortavance)... Once we have finished the food trials and are not feeding her what she is allergic to, we will be in a much better position as she wont be getting excess allergens to push her over her threshold... We've actually had far more success as far as the hives go with doubling her antihistamine dosage. If we do have to use more drug therapy our next line of defense will most likely be atopica, as it's the atopic allergies that are harder to control and cause the hives, which is the big issue we will probably deal with and for which the cortisone is ineffective (in our case, with the hives. Not saying it is for everyone or atopy in general). But, yes, if it became necessary to use cortisone more regularly and it was our best choice I would. She's had a lot of "peace" and a lot of good times through out the years... 95% of the time you'd have no idea she is an allergic dog. I'm glad you added you edit in that you didn't want to sound judgmental, because I was going to come on and rip shreds because it certainly sounded like you we saying she's been left to suffer, which she most certainly has not at any time what so ever. She's in great condition, yes I had a tantrum at her condition when discovering new food allergies, which I do think I'm allowed to have a foot stamp over because it's really not fair that she's become allergic to more food sources, but it's easy to deal with in the long run. We have a really good regime of treatment, which our dermatologist is hugely impressed with at it's success Edit: for clarity Rip shreads? You're allowed to do whatever you want, I didn't question what you are allowed to do or not do Simply asked the question in a pretty Black and White fashion, my question was based on your venting post that made it sound like she's had a very long term problem and she's 8 now, so a fairly reasonable question if you ask me but decided to add clarification because people can get a bit sensitive with these kinds of things. I've had an allergic dog since he was 4 months old, I understand the frustration, don't have anything against your treatment plan at all...whatever works for the dog and gives the dog "peace". I'm glad your Derm is happy with how she is going. Pls remember your posting on a public forum and this thread is 11 pages in and people won't have always read all the pages so asking straight forward questions is a way to catch up. How you decide to respond to those questions is a whole different story
  19. Where about's are you? I'd love to get whole rabbits for that price1
  20. I have to - but f*&^ me it's hard after smoking solidly for 14 yrs Congrats on quitting Just quickly going OT... I did it on Champix and I had been smoking for 15 years and was one of those people who other people never think could give up. I have a DOL friend who gave up on Zyban. I don't think it could have been easier than it was on Champix. Good Luck!
  21. I gave up ciggies as Dante apprantly was allergic to Cigarette Smoke, didn't make a difference to him which sucky. You should give up for you though
  22. Zayda, I know you don't like Cortisone but at nearly 8 years old your dog has been through hell with allergies, would you not consider giving her some peace for her remaining years? Do you feel more comfortable with Atopica? Edited: I really don't want the above to sound judgemental, just asking the question and your thoughts about it.
  23. I would first ask if you could be interpreting the noise incorrectly.
  24. Seems simple to me.... 1) Put a mesh cover over the play pen. 2) Get a dog run and put the dogs outside in it Can't be good for a small breed puppy with growing bones to be leaping from 70cm?
