  1. Dew Claw explanation by Christine Zink
  2. There are 3 that I know of - one in NSW and 2 in QLD :)
  3. Since Huski posted a selfie with her baby, I figured I should too! He is very tired after spending the morning at work with me, we're just home on a lunch break now for a few hours. He is such a fun little guy, I am so in love already! He and Elsie are still spending as much time playing as possible, and his training is coming along nicely! He loves learning tricks, and while I was doing some core work with Elsie on a peanut ball he just jumped up onto all by himself and wobbled around on it like "what's the big deal?" - so cute! Still no name though... We're trying to decide if maybe an Australian name is a good idea... Dingo.... Esky... Shrimp... hehehe
  4. Awesome! Just two in the litter, so you met his brother! Yup he's a Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (smooth)... Just call them Pods though! They're a hound breed :)
  5. Our new (still nameless!) puppy! He flew over here from Brisbane a few days ago, and is settling in nicely at home. He and Elsie are getting on so well, it's adorable!
  6. Oh how exciting! Are you going to pick them up? Or do dogs need to do quarantine coming from Aus? --Lhok No quarantine! He is here asleep on my partner! Some photos of our first meeting!
  7. So awesome, glad he is back to his naughty self! I work alongside an amazing osteopath, she is such a miracle worked and often treats the owners and dogs in one trip too
  8. Yes we often have the dogs sleeping in the cars, or in a dog trailer during the summer. I, like most dog sport people here, have custom crates built into the back of my car, so it's very handy and already set up for Elsie to sleep in. In the winter in NZ I won't leave her out in the car though, way too cold! Each June I travel with some friends to a long weekend show and we always stay in the same place that allows the dogs inside... Very thankful for that as one night I left a bowl of water inside the crate in the car and it was frozen solid the next morning!
  9. Elsie is allowed on any and all furniture at home, but when we travel she sleeps in her crate and on the floor on a blanket in the motel. We usually travel for shows, and I am always way too exhausted to worry about trying to clean dog hair off any furniture, it's just easier to contain her. She is always tired when we're away competing anyway so doesn't mind going into her crate or onto a blankie and sleeping.
  10. There will be many, many photos! :D We have plans to compete in similar sports to Elsie if it takes his fancy (agility, tracking/working trials and obedience). Going to write a submission to the NZKC so Pods get added to the list of breeds that can lure course for titles too, so will have a turn at that hopefully! I don't have any plans on becoming a breeder Thanks! :D Elsie is very spoiled and it will be a shock for her not being the absolute centre of my universe 24/7. She has been trying to get used to the idea by trying his new collar & harness on!
  11. Yes so prepared for that! And the "Oh I saw a litter of 12 of those at the Tokoroa pound last year" hahaha Here's a photo of him with his vet after having his pre flight blood tests done! As to the how and why... I saw the breed added to the NZKC list of recognized breeds a few years ago and was interested (liked the temperament and look), then as Elsie was coming up to 3 years I decided it was time for another dog, and living in a very small house and with input from my partner decided a little dog was the best option for us. I don't do fuzzy/wirey/long hair so my list was pretty much composed of italian greyhounds, English toy terriers, jack russells and the pods. My partner realllyyy wanted an iggy, but after seeing soo many through work with broken legs I decided I didn't want to have that cloud hanging over me every time I walk puppy in the forest with Elsie, and my partner wasn't keen on another terrier type dog (Elsie is a lot of dog lol!) so after some careful consideration... and meeting the breeder and some pods in the flesh last year... We decided they're for us :) Everything I've read about the temperament of the breed is appealing, they're cute and generally really healthy too. I've met a lot of people that compete in agility and obedience with them via facebook in Europe... So yeah there you go! :)
  12. Ok we are officially 6 sleeps away from the arrival of NZ's first Portuguese Podengo Pequeno smooth :D
  13. I don't find the smell that bad really! I get the frozen green tripe from K9 Natural, I'm sure it doesn't smell quite as bad as when you buy 1kg blocks of it and defrost it bleh!
  14. Our possum population is estimated to be around 30 million! We have a few commercial foods made with possum. And really nice possum fur gloves :) And possum fur underwear :D

  16. Interesting, I've never seen that brand here in Christchurch, will have to look out for it when I am next at the pet store. Could be a good food option for in our emergency/earthquake kit.
  17. Ok I think I might finally, finally be allowed to be excited - we hopefully have a puppy arriving here from Australia on March 5th! Seems like my partner is on board, I have saved enough money, we're in the process of sorting transport now - hope everything works out!! I'm so scared of something going wrong last minute!
  18. My dog used to swim that way too - bottom down and feet up splashing a lot (which would panic her a bit and make her get out). I work at a hydrotherapy clinic, so I got Elsie swimming properly in the pool there, using a life jacket and supporting her rear in the water. Lots of practice and she swims beautifully now, very little splashing and can swim forever!
  19. OMG Alibi, her face Another ball lover here!
  20. I second a snood for swimming, we use them at my hydrotherapy pool sometimes Swim Snood
