  1. I really like what the Doberman Pinscher Club of America does DPCA website They host a pedigree database with health test results They have a longevity program They have an albino dog tracking registry They host health clinics and provide a lot of information about health problems in the breed They rent out holtors for heart monitoring They keep track of top 20 dogs in agility, obedience, breed showing They do temperament testing Record titles earned in the breed Lots of awards for people and dogs in the breed Provide education for owners, breeders, exhibitors, judges and the general public. In depth breed standard discussion Host the national breed show Basically everything :)
  2. There's someone in NZ that just moved here from America that has "fox red" labradors, though judging by the multitude of colours they breed I would wonder if breeding for colours is their main goal...
  3. I don't know if I can share links to other forums here, so just some quotes from the Doberman board I am on.
  4. Dr Elsa Flint, she is a veterinary behaviourist in Auckland. Animal Behaviour
  5. I won't let Elsie (13kg) play with small dogs unless I know the owner and dog quite well - there are only a couple of small dogs that she is allowed to play with and she adjusts her play style really well. When Elsie plays with big dogs its all chase, bite, bodyslam, tackle etc... when she plays with a little dog (or a puppy) she lays on the ground and lets them climb all over her while she mouths their legs. She is really quite gentle when she has to be!
  6. Baby Elsie! Grown up Elsie :)
  7. Elsie is having a hare for dinner tonight, a process that takes a few hours for her! Having whole prey is nicer in the evening too when there aren't flies around to land all over it!
  8. I feed at night because we often go out and do stuff early in the day (go to trials, or big forest runs) so I don't want her doing that with a full tummy. Also Elsie is not a morning girl, and as I said earlier she will leave her breakfast until around 2pm normally... So if I try to feed breakfast before a trial (around 6am) she doesn't touch it.
  9. Elsie is raw fed, and fed once a day in the evening. I've found if I give her breakfast she leaves it until about 2pm then won't eat her dinner. And it attracts flies. Just easier feeding once in the evening, when home from shows/training/long walks.
  10. Also worth noting that while I was studying vet nursing they encouraged that in vet clinics the cleaning products we use should be rotated every few weeks to try and prevent resistance - I will bring that idea to any kennels I work at from now on. Hospital disinfectants created drug-resistant Acinetobacter strains Klebsiella pneumoniae susceptibility to biocides and its association with cepA, qacΔE and qacE efflux pump genes and antibiotic resistance.
  11. I've worked in three kennels over the last 9 years and they were all a little different! Daily clean First kennel - pick up waste, hose kennel out, spray a disinfectant (can't remember what), hose that out, wipe clean with squeegee Second kennel - pick up waste, hose kennel, spray disinfectant, scrub kennel all over with brush, hose again, spray different disinfectant, leave to dry. Third kennel - pick up waste, mop kennel floor with a mix of bleach and disinfectant, leave to dry. When an animal goes home First kennel - Take bed out and hose it off. Hose kennel out. Spray disinfectant over bed and kennel and hose out. Spray bed and kennel with trigene mixture and leave to dry. Second kennel - Hose kennel out. Spray disinfectant and scrub. Hose kennel out. Spray everything with trigene. Third kennel - Mop kennel out with a mixture of bleach/disinfectant, use a cloth to wash surfaces with bleach/disinfectant mix then dry surfaces with another cloth and then spray with trigene. First kennel every day after dogs had been put away would hose/disinfect/hose/dry the corridors. Second kennel did a similar thing. Third kennel would vacuum and mop. I prefer the cleaning method of the third place that I've worked, especially in the winter, as using hoses in NZ means that the kennels never really get that dry. Using a mop (especially with heated floors) means the kennels are dry within half an hour so the dogs can come back in to a dry room. I think the second kennel that I worked at were a little too concerned with cleaning, scrubbing everything on a daily basis was a waste of time IMO - time I could have been spending playing/interacting with dogs. Obviously it's important to clean everything when a dog leaves, but I don't think any dogs house was as clean as these kennels were! One of the kennels changed food and water bowls on a daily basis One changed only food bowls on a daily basis One had the same food/water bowl in for the dog the whole time. I like changing food/water bowls daily as it stops a goober build up in the bowls and if you have a dishwasher it's not that bad to wash them. One of the kennels did each load of washing 3 times - I thought that a little excessive. Very clean blankets though
  12. Ruffwear Front Attach Harness Experiences or reviews?
  13. Elsie seems to think puppies stop being puppies around 7/8 months - that's when she will normally stop letting them get away with puppy antics.
  14. You shouldn't - vets that do that are contributing to antibiotic resistance. If your vets sterile surgery technique is good there is no reason to give antibiotics as a precaution.
  15. I much prefer a forum to Facebook as everything is so much easier to find and read. Trying to read a thread on Facebook with 500 comments just leaves me enraged. I prefer Facebook for small talk, but for any sort of discussion I prefer a forum.
  16. Not really, we both love Elsie! He defers to me about everything, though does comment on how often I have her at the vet (especially when I won't go to see a doctor about anything for myself). Oh and sometimes when he is in a grump he'll get annoyed about there being dog hair and grass in our bed or on the couch
  17. In NZ iggies can earn coursing titles, they are a toy here too :) NZKC Sighthound Coursing Regulations
  18. I really like this video put together by an obedience club in NZ, has some enthusiastic heelwork as well as lots of other obedience exercises. A fun way to show obedience isn't all boring! :)
  19. Elsie sleeps on my bed, and often back when she was eating kibble she would walk into the lounge room, stand there and do a great big stinky fart then trot back to the bedroom. Horrid dog
  20. Elsie stopped farting when I started raw feeding, my flatmates have banned me from ever feeding kibble again as every kibble she had made her fart soooooo badly. She is such a sweet dog, but the smells that came from her!!!!!
  21. Dachshund (Teckel) Giant Schnauzer Bouvier De Flandres Irish Setter English Setter Doberman
  22. One day a mal, but while I'm still living in the city in a tiny house I need something smaller than Elsie.... Sooo if everything goes to plan, a portuguese podengo pequeno smooth :D
  23. She said that she probably wouldn't be successful with a deaf dog as she is a slow handler and H360 is very much based on verbals, but if you were a fast enough handler and could pre-cue then H360 should work well.
