  1. Akayla you are correct, it is the Encyclopedia of the Dog by Bruce Fogle. I do not like that it includes "labradoodles" but they are in a section at the back about cross breeds. All of the information though seems to be quite correct (from what I know of certain breeds) and it's honest at least! More than a few breeds are described to be for experienced owners/working type homes only. I display it at my work as it get SO much more love there than sitting in my house. Every single customer who sees it, has a look for their breed :D I do keep an eye on it though, it was NOT a cheap book.
  2. Thank You. It just prove my point "Breed history. Untill the 1800s, all spits-type dogs in Russia were called laikas." As far as I know it s still the same. I could not find any thing database a like of the breed. I have found only one kennel in Russia which distributes puppies of this Siberian types of dog from Moscow. They just sell the puppies. and by the way Husky is originated in US(Alaska) very close 2km away from Russian Kamchatka where Yonjuro took a shot of him with a lovely Laika named Volk (Wolf in English) in Kamchatka - Eastern Russia. I bet "Vok" have no pure breed papers. :) And why should he need that if he already proved that he is Laika enough any local will tell you that. :) Laika is a type of dog you cannot put in the brackets of breeding rules. what I was actually pointing out is that this book is highlighting them as 3 separate breeds, not a breed type. All Spitz may have = Laika 200 years ago, but clearly there is a distinction now. At least that's what the authors of this book have found, and they seem to have done their research. The only reason I know about most of breeds being mentioned in this thread is because of this book, and my flicking through it every day.
  3. I know it's a bit late, but I have a breed book at my work, with all breeds we're used to, and obscure ones as well. This is what I found re. Laika breeds: the first one, the Russo-European Laika, explains the most about the origins.
  4. I needed my lifevest because my older girl literally used to "freeze" once the tips of her ears got wet, not a good tactic for staying afloat.... She's better now, but I find it a good mount for the action cam
  5. I have the Ezydog one, granted for Cleo who doesn't have a penis, but where it sits doesn't seem like it would be bothersome....but maybe try one on if possible? (Can your local pet store order it in for you to try? We did that recently for a guy)
  6. Wonder if they make prawn/crab detecting dogs? My mum is highly allergic to shellfish, if she swallows some it will kill her. Some restaurants think that just picking the prawn out of the meal is enough ( ) which worries me... I guess you could train that, but it would be needed so little that it wouldn't be worth it.
  7. these dogs have fascinated me since I saw a segment on Dogs 101 on them (on Animal Planet) amazing selective breeding, lets make them have long ear hair for ducks to follow. And that name, sounds like you can speak a different language (which I can't) If someone imported them and got them recognised, I think I would want one. Edit- just watched the segment again on Youtube...apparently it's the tail, not the ears that lures the ducks. Whoops
  8. And Nala's only got until the 30th! We have my local show next weekend, in Coffs, is Laci being shown here? I've sent Nala off once to be shown by a friend, was nerve wracking!
  9. Oh I had such a good plan when I had planned Nala's homecoming. Then we didnt get back from Brisbane until 1am and the plan went to s**t. Lol. Put her in her pen, she met Cleo straight away in the house and then we slept for 5 hours. We kept Nala inside for that day, with Cleo on lead the rest of thr time. Nala was such an outgoing girl that it should have been HER on lead! Lol 8 week old pup terrorising a 2 year old....we kept them seperate for a while! I'd be having your older dog on lead and let pup go to him. That's what I have done in the past when plans did work! Or through an ex pen....thats how Nala met our other dog.
  10. My girl is a squat cocker when she marks she cocks a leg as well, but she is also squatting. Strange girl!
  11. That's good she's come around to your side. I don't think non dog people really understand the commitment levels that we can get. You should've heard some of the comments from family friends when Mum told them I'm entering shows and training for trials... Apparently that's a horrible hobby and will repel men! Haha to the bolded bit! My husband is a surfing/playstation type of man, hard enough to get his attention during a game but he's there ringside cheering me on, setting up my gazebo and giving me tips on handling (!) He knew nothing of showing 4 years ago! Partly how I knew he was the right one  Has he got any like minded friends/brothers/cousins? The comment is hilarious looking back, but it's also upsetting that you know... I'm 23 and apparently all my hobbies need to involve whether or not men find it an attractive attribute. *Grumbles* haha sorry he was a "once off" model and his only available cousin is like 14.....lol. As good as he is with the showing though, his cleaning mechanism malfunctions regularly

  13. I've not had judgement on the way I raise my girls, but I have had judgement over my doggy passion (or obsession). One of my sisters HATED how much time I spent at dog shows - which is not all that often, this was sparked by me going to two shows in a month - but I ignored it until we had a blow up over something else and she realised how much they mean to me, and that this isn't a passing phase (nearly 4 years now!) and now she buys me spotty cushions and cute fridge magnets that say "my next dog will be normal" and it cracks me up. She has totally come around to my side. I ignored it, totally kept pursuing my passion and not hiding it. She made me feel bad that I should love something like this (she's totally into Raw food and no sugar and all that which I find equally strange). Maybe he saw it and felt bad about how his dogs live? Idk, just a thought.
  14. My pup Nala had the Nobivac, didn't plan it that way - I only realised after the vaccination was given and I saw the sticker on the chart. I was a bit miffed that I wasn't even asked if I wanted it! But I liked getting out and about earlier but I didn't do it that often anyway. Most of our outings consist of going to our local beach which has few dogs, and I was taking Nala down there pre-vac anyway, just below the tide line. (my older dog is reactive to other dogs, so I avoid other dogs when possible with her)
  15. Hi Paws 22, I know nothing about BC's and you've been given great info. I DO know about having pups flown interstate, both my dogs came from Tasmania and I live in northern NSW. My first dog was flown straight to my regional town, and my second was flown to Brisbane we drove the 5 hours back home (she slept the whole time, it was after 7pm and we had worn her out playing). Some breeders won't fly pups which I can understand, but my girls both had had positive experiences and arrived in perfect health.
  16. I have a breed plagued with not lots of issues, but two pretty severe ones. The mentality that everyone else is breeding with those lines so why shouldn't I? Is possibly the reason my breed has one of it's problems today! Besides a special bunch of backcrossed Dalmatians, every.single.dalmatian carries a double gene for high uric acid (=bladder stones). Probably because one line was favoured and they doubled up on the HUA gene and once that was done, there was no going back (it's a recessive gene, it had to be backcrossed out) You might now have a chance to STOP a problem becoming concrete in your breed. It may seem small and purely cosmetic to you, but the pet puppy buyer who has the same problem may not feel that way. My hopeful foundation bitch is only 11 months old, and as much as I can't wait to breed with her as she's stunning, I am prepared to desex her if I get a bad result from a health test. It's enough that my breed has to contend with a high rate of deafness and bladder stones, I am not going to add to that with something I could have prevented.
  17. Cleo - truly a mumma's girl. My loyal little spot Nala - total goofball/ray of sunshine. Never fails to make me laugh or smile.
  18. might try take a pic of the bag tomorrow and share. From memory, it has sweet potato like the fish one. Also is more expensive than the other varieties.
  19. We've had it in at my work since Friday, already sold a few bags as well. We only got the dog one too, didn't order any cat. The packaging has changed too, I like the new look (although the black bags stood out from the others)
  20. At my work we have never once sold a tub of Rapigel for dog use...and we go through a fair bit! I can't say I've used any other product for myself other than Rapigel...but I have looked at the dog shampoo when I had none of mine left. I found my mother in laws' though so used that. My dad accidentally ate a Chicken stick once....thought it was a jerky type snack. Commented to my mum that it was a bit yuck...she said yes, because it's a dog treat. It seems to be husbands and dads only that do that sort of accidental eating of dog food?
  21. My girls get brekkie between 8am-10am depending on if we're working or not. Dinner varies between 5.30-6.30pm. They have no strict "schedule" of when it comes out the other end, but I HAVE noticed that running down at the beach can "hurry things along" and they'll do it down there at any time of day - note only running for several minutes makes this happen, short runs and walking doesn't get the gears turning.
  22. Was wondering where you were, as they are really bad where I am and BAM we are in the same area! It's just not cold enough here, they are SO prevalent. I use Advantix, haven't had a tick yet (touch wood)
  23. Well done! What an achievement at such a young age :) I wish I could get to more shows, I really do enjoy them and the thrill of winning has left me on a high.
  24. Thank you, we got 7 more points today with a bitch challenge :D Nala's breeder was happy for us as it's the first BOB out of the 3 Neilros kids being shown. well done on Dare's achievements, there were a few fields there this weekend and I happily told my mum what breed they were when she commented on how nice they were. I wish we got to share our ring with gundogs and hounds, I much prefer watching them over toys and terriers.
  25. my mistake, the fish one which has less grain and uses sweet potato. My Nala has a sweet potato fetish, i'm sure she'd love it.
