  1. Mark Bilson at SASH in North Ryde is an opthamologist and was brilliant with my old blind boy. Good luck - hope he is ok.
  2. So sorry to hear that - you have done amazing work. Thank you for your help with my anxious rescue girl - so much appreciated.:)
  3. I also spoke to a Bassett breeder last night who will try to help this boy - we are all on the same page. :)
  4. You gave Bosco the greatest gift of all. RIP beautiful boy xx
  5. Frontline should NEVER BE USED ON A DOG WITH A SENSITIVE SKIN. The labeling was changed years ago due to many adverse reactions to Fipronil. Also if your groomer does not clean her blades properly/has blunt blades/or clips too close to the skin this will cause skin irritation. She could also be giving your dog clipper burn which will irritate like hell. Do you have ivy or plane trees where you live? Both can cause excessive skin irritation. Did you see Dr Linda Vogelnest at Sydney University?
  6. Always such a tough decision - best made with a very trusted vet. I have a list I go through - Can the dog defecate and urinate without any pain/discomfort? Can the dog get up and down comfortably? Can the dog walk to his dinner/water bowl? Is there still quality of life left - are they still interested enough to sniff, communicate with their pack, and show interest in the outside world? I think you know in your heart when the time is right, but it is a gut wrenching call. Thinking of you xx
  7. I would take their temperature - if they have a temp I would go to the vets asap. Dogs can dehydrate fairly quickly with diarrhea. If no temp would feed bland chicken breast/rice.
  8. Every dog owner's worst nightmare. So very sorry that your beautiful dogs were attacked and I hope their recovery is swift. Please report this to both the police and Council rangers. Owners of dangerous dogs need to be held accountable.
  9. We had a 3 yr old schnauzer that was surrendered on both Prozac and Valium I was told the dog was totally manic, unable to be toilet trained/chronic barker. I also found out the dog was never walked. lived in the yard and they had surrendered her older mate to the pound. She also had a council nuisance barking order on her. The dog was dropped off to my house - she was high energy, but nothing out of the ordinary for a young dog. I decided to find out how manic she was, took her on the ocean walk with my two, she pulled on the lead and was strong, but absolutely loved it and never stopped wagging her tail. Off to the vet for an opinion. My vets thought she was fine, just needed boundaries/training - opinion "normal schnauzer". We slowly weaned her off the drugs whilst in foster care. My carers worked with her, and loved her so much they adopted her. She is now such a lovely dog but just in the wrong home. Good luck with your GSD - they are beautiful dogs.
  10. Ware-housing dogs/long term kenneling without rehab/training/social interaction IMO is never acceptable. Keeping many dogs in a very large pack situation is always going to be problematic. Sending a DA dog (that has killed) out into the community is not rescue.......
  11. I hope you are not considering a schnauzer as they would not cope at all with being so isolated. The majority of problem dogs we get surrendered live in this type of situation. They become barkers as they are lonely and don't have social interaction/enrichment/enough exercise/mental stimulation. Move them to a loving family as an inside dog, with people who are home a lot more, use lots of fun obedience/agility training and positive rewards = no longer problem dog. Perhaps you could consider installing a dog door, exercising the dog before and after work and allowing the dog to live inside with the family?
  12. So very sorry that you have lost your beloved Pug - he had a very blessed life. Heart dogs always walk beside us.
  13. Coogee is very dog friendly and I take my three to a cafe after the ocean walk almost every day. The one I go to has superb coffee and food and little buckets of water for your dog. :) As long as they are well behaved I don't see the issue with it.
  14. I would not walk an ex puppy farm dog that far - she would not be fit enough. I initially start slowly (around the block) and work up their fitness very gradually to doing longer walks as they become fitter. Especially with rescues that are very thin, I do not want to strip any weight off them.
  15. The mistake the rescue made was rehoming her as an only dog. PF dogs have had company their entire lives and to go to being an only dog makes them even more insecure. I hope she is a foster failure - I have three :)
  16. Thanks for the great advice. Bonnie loves her crate, its her safe place she goes to if she gets overwhelmed at any stage. They told me that she wasn't a really difficult case, she came around really quickly but has had quite a set back. I just want to get her back to how she was before she left. She was starting to play and interact with everyone, it was fantastic to see. I have to believe she's been at that point before, she can get there again. Of course she can. Who was her new home with and did they have a dog for company? I would highly recommend to the group rehoming her. 1. She is placed in a quite home with no children/visiting children. 2. With a very stable dog. 3. With people who will train her and are prepared to work with an ex pf dog - they are not like placing a "rescue" dog.
  17. A couple of months for an ex puppy farm dog is very, very early days. Most take years to rehab. I own two ex pf dogs and have rescued many. When I rescue them and bring them home, I just let them be and allow them to follow the other dogs. I don't make any fuss of them, just quietly speak to them "good boy" or whatever. They should IMO always be placed with a very stable dog, so that they can follow. I also don't crate them if they have been rescued from a cage/kennel situation. I give them a "safe place" basket/area they can retreat to in the house. I toilet train them the same as an eight week old pup including getting up and taking out during the night. This way they are very easily toilet trained. My male "paced" all night initially but settled after a week or so. Two years on, he can still be frightened of certain things - such as skateboards/bikes etc. You will find she progresses and regresses - it is part of rehab. Some great advice I got from a behaviourist was not to treat them as a "rescue" or feel sorry form them. Just work gently and quietly and they improve. I have found my two the most rewarding rescues I have ever done. If rehoming Bonnie make sure she goes to a home with a stable dog - I also never rehome ex pf dogs to families with children.
  18. Happy Anniversary Haredown Whippets Have always read your posts over the years, always informative and eloquent :) I recall the PP scandal and do miss Cordelia......
  19. Prayers for a very swift recovery for Boof. You are both in my thoughts. xxx
  20. okay thanks. He doesn't seem to be losing fur or nipping at the area, just times of the day where he is constantly scratching the belly area. He isn't scratching after a bath so I'm not too concern about aloveen but when i was reading some of the posts, some people indicated that aloveen is not the gentlest shampoo around so was hoping to put him on something else. He used to have dandruff after a shower but I now use conditioner on him and seems to have resolved that issue. Also just started putting him on flax seed oil. What are you using for flea treatment?
  21. We have just rescued a dog with chronic malessezia (fungal infection) - she is almost bald Giraffez, I would suggest a vet visit with skin scraping so you know what you are dealing with and can treat appropriately. Using different things could make his condition worse. efs
  22. Did you get a vet diagnosis as to what the skin condition is?
  23. My rescue bitch had a bladder full of struvite stones, and one in each kidney. After urine analysis, she was x rayed which showed the stones. She had successful surgery and is now on CD diet. Does your dog have a UTI? Maybe an X ray to diagnose and another urine analysis.
