  1. I've had a few kids point to Nova and say "Look at the tiger"
  2. Seeing as Nova was mistaken as a 'long haired Dalmatian' I'm pretty sure some people just don't even know what Dalmatians are!
  3. i'm so sorry for what has happening with your puppy. Please make sure you get documentation for everything at the vets incase you need it, and if the vet diagnoses it as a prexisisting condition get it in writing and ask your vet to send you a copy of the scans that have been taken.
  4. Just so you know, if you decide to go down the route of a registered breeder there is a dog show coming up in Armidale on the 28th-30th of October at the Tourist Park. Likely to have some dachshund breeders and dogs there for you to meet
  5. I would be sorry to see you go Haredown, I've always found your posts knowledgeable and practical.
  6. I generally take Nova for a walk and a run each most days. Walks are relaxed and sniffs allowed as long as the leash is kept loose, I don't allow him to pull me over to get to smells. Runs are probably a bit more like canicross, He's out in front, he doesn't have much of an interest to stop and if he did I'd probably fall over him  If we don't go for a run he gets an off leash exploring time. Walks are much stricter if it's down the main street or in a busy area, then I want him to heel nicely next to me.
  7. If you want to tell us your general area, some people experienced here may be able to recommend a veterinary behaviourist.
  8. Woah woah woah... What happened to your baby puppy? That looks like a real dog now
  9. You could try a scratch board. Instructions start at about 1:42
  10. Ah Bella! I've always admired her, she's so beautiful! Show off your dogs ok! Nova is 3 now, he's grown into such a lovely boy, he's calm and lazy around the house and would sleep 22 hours a day if I let him, we get up for a run in the morning and he takes him self straight back to bed! But he has a huge amount of energy for work and just loves to train and play. His current favourite toy is an Invincible snake! He is so switched on, I have to keep coming up with new things to teach him as he will pick up tricks in just a session, but he is fun to experiment new things with, we've just started learning nosework. Here is a photo from a trial last month where he gained his RN :)
  11. I started teaching Nova nosework a few weeks ago. He's picking it up so fast! It's amazing to watch them working!
  12. Institute of Canine Biology Research Concerning Human and Animal Interactions
  13. Go buy an enzyme cleaner. 'Urine off','natures miracle' something like that. They'll be in your local pet store. For future reference don't use disinfectant over urine, vinegar does work though. But now that it's been there for a while I think you'll have to go for the enzyme cleaners for sure.
  14. Yes Jed I'm actually part of the scientific community and understand how this works. When asking for participation on this site anyone who participates here ( and I'm not just talking about THIS research, I'm talking every single one that gets posted here) would just be one small sample. But is that sample not worth something? Yes. And people here all have one thing in common. These researchers will be posting their research far and wide, and people often complain about wanting their voices heard, well this is one avenue for it.
  15. Talk about bad PR in pedigree dogs. Every time a researcher asks for participation on DOL (representing pedigree dogs, owners and breeders) they get blasted. Whinge and don't fill them out, but your voice will be lost in all the research happening if you keep doing it. I'm surprised anyone still bothers posting them here.
  16. Pedigree dogs, especially certain breeds have a serious PR problem. Instead of breeders and the Kennel and Breed clubs sticking their heads in the sand they need to be proactive and do something BEFORE there is more uproar and calls for regulation.
  17. They always aim for the carpet. More than half my house is tiles, he still went straight for the carpet!
  18. This happened to me a few weeks ago. I tried everything and the only thing that got the smell out was Natures Miracle. The big bottle, not the spray. I used the entire bottle (It was a big spew) and let it soak right into the carpet and let it sit there with a towel over it for a week and do it's job (enzyme cleaner) until it dried naturally. Worked perfectly. I also have dark blue carpet and it didn't bleach or take any colour out of it what so ever.
  19. Source? Desexing also increases the risk of other types of cancer. Not to mention there is research (some of which is currently in the research about dogs thread) that disputes that aggression statement. There are positives and negatives for everything. This owner can make up her own mind and not have to worry about being judged for doing so.
  20. I thought 'no-kill' was not euthanising all dogs that were healthy, not dangerous and rehomeable. This dog can be euthanised for its own welfare and the shelter still fit in to 'no-kill'.
  21. Ok first up I don't know near enough about them and they fit more in the small size as I don't think the bigger sizes are in Australia yet (they come in three sizes) but from what I know of them they fit the bits I've bolded above and the rest hopefully the two DOLers I know with them can come answer if they fit the rest or not! Podengo Pequeno
  22. Lots of other sports too. Weight pull / drag training http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/263593-weight-pulling-discussion/page__p__6717247__hl__%2Bweight+%2Bpulling__fromsearch__1#entry6717247 (there's a member here who does it with her Rotty too) Scentwork / nose work - which is different to tracking and zero impact - great for ANY DOG! Young growing pups and old, crotchey dogs (like mine) and all in between These guys are in NSW https://www.facebook.com/K9NoseTime/ but there is a presence in Vic too Mushing/urban sledding/ bikejoring https://www.facebook.com/huskyjournals/ obedience (love this video) They're just a few I can think of off the top of my head .... If you have a shepherd HERDING :)
  23. What about White Swiss Shepherd Dogs? I know a few competing in agility and obedience successfully and others doing herding. I know some oldies going strong too. I don't know how they go drive wise for IPO. But at least one WSSD I know is very highly driven and is a super obedience dog :)
  24. Intelligentdog, good for obedience, large size, looks similar to what you are after. With good training an off switch would be manageable, Rottweiler?
  25. What are you after in terms of temperament? Perhaps that could help narrow down your list? There are some very very different temperaments in that list. Then you can go out and meet some of these breeds and their breeders in the flesh. Health was a huge input into the breed I picked, and I didn't go for some breeds I admire because of health issues, but I personally would rather have a dog that suited my lifestyle that may have a few years less life span than a dog that wasn't suitable that had a long lifespan.
