  1. Well we went to the vet this morning and we are home with anti-biotics, anti-inflams and the vet dressed a poultice on the foot to try and draw it out. Because the foot had an open hole and is weeping he is hoping the foreign body will work it's way out. She doesn't have a temperature, so that's good but there is a bit of pus weeping from the hole. We're to go back there again on Monday to check if the swelling has gone down and if it has, all good. If not, he'll have to put her under and lance it out. Thank you for your responses! I was hoping to wait a couple of days and see if it would resolve itself but after your responses and with christmas and new year close downs - I didn't want to take any chances. :)
  2. Thanks for your responses, I look after this dog like it is one of my own when she stays here - so I think to be safe we'll be off to vet then.
  3. The dog that has come to me to stay with me over the christmas break I have noticed has a very swollen top part of her foot. She is licking it and is limping slightly. I have clipped away the fur a bit to see and it is swollen up to a head with stuff oozing out and obviously painful when I squeeze. She must have a foreign object in there - any recommendations on what is best to do for her?
  4. Don't worry about that silly letter. I look at it that you ARE NOT contributing to putting any dogs into any pounds. You will be responsible and look after your pet and not send it off to the pound. It doesn't matter that you get a purebreed, that is your choice. What does matter is that you will be responsible and won't be dumping your dog when the going gets a little rough. PS: love the reply!
  5. Another for the Hub Veterinary Clinic at Aberfoyle Park. I have been with them for the last 12 years and they are terrific. I've tried a few vet practices in my time and am very fussy with who I go to.
  6. Oh what a tragedy. Poor cat and poor owner.
  7. Well I had one dog at the vet for suspected blockage which was causing squirty diarrhea which he was just making it outside onto our brick paving, so you can imagine all the globs of wet sloppy muck there. Then while at the vet getting treatment for said diarrhea one of the other dogs ate a WHOLE fruit cake and a whole bag of nuts, so later that day she started vomiting and diarrhea everywhere too, adding to the muck on the bricks. Four huge vomits outside and third dog decides to eat the yummy fruit cake vomit I've had enough!
  8. I've started my old guy on Hills Science Diet Healthy Mobility which has surprised me with the improvement in his activity levels. Along with the usual fish oil and joint guard we feed sardines with the dry food. Also he gets a Cartrophen injection every now and again too. Plus he is on Metacam daily. Also visits to the chiropractor help too. Good luck to you both :)
  9. Clean run free shipping toys of course
  10. Oh no, maybe they are an Australian Terrier crossed with a German Shepherd...... how could they
  11. Sending best wishes for the dogs affected with ticks hope they get well real soon.
  12. Poor you. They're special when they're old aren't they. My old dog has started barking, just a loud, constant bark at seemingly nothing. I'm sure his hearing is going and his eyes are cloudy. He spends a lot of time sleeping these days and when I'm home he wants to be constantly near me and on my lap. The pacing your dog does seems like she is worried about something. If her hearing is going things won't sound the same to her as they used to so she could be quite confused. The pacing could also be that she is in pain or something, so a vet check would probably be good. You need to tell OH that she's old and needs extra special care now :)
  13. Cleveland your family must be so lovely, this bought tears to my eyes thinking how much love there is for your little man in your family. All dogs should have that same level of love.
  14. If we have rellies come over to stay who don't like my dogs being inside as part of the family - I've been known to put the people outside.... in the caravan!!!! Some people think that's really wrong - but I totally can't see anything wrong with it!!
  15. In my experience, there are very few people who do not wonder about their "rescue" dogs life before them. Everyone I meet also likes to invent a past life for my dog too. This does not mean that all of these people will not address the behavioural issues of the dog because it is a "rescue". I believe all of them would do a great job of bringing up the dog to become a well behaving member of their family. Those of you who are way more experienced in behavioural issues of dogs and who have lots of rescue dogs come through are not interested in their past lives, but are looking to get those dogs in good working order and as well behaving family members. This is fair enough. The rest of us, with only one dog to work with (or two or three) like to look at the loves of our lives and wonder....
  16. Genuine question here - If my dog fell to the ground cringing, like she was expecting to be hit or kicked, when my husband walked past her and did that for no-one else, but with time and persistance from us, does not do that any more - is that because she was cringing because of past experiences or because that is her nature? She doesn't do that at all now and is a very confident little bunny, and I honestly cannot see now that she is a cringy type of dog at all, even when she is out of her comfort zone. To me - I assume that it is because maybe the dad where she lived was one of those people that would kick the dog out of the way?
  17. best wishes Kavik, and Jules how is your little one today?
  18. I'm hoping for your sake you don't have a snake Tell your puppies to keep away! Hopefully it's just a rat or something not so dangerous.
  19. Hi Jules, So sorry about your darling one not being well. It is very hot at the moment and maybe she has found out that it is nice and cool under the bed (hopefully), but also if she's not feeling very well, she may feel safe and just want some peace and quiet under there. hope she perks up soon.
  20. I think that is totally irresponsible!! When we go camping I'm happy for my dogs to be off-lead during the daytime if I am sure they won't go running off after rabbits or anything else and I make sure they stay close around my campsite, BUT at night time - no way. There are sooooooooo many issues here why their dogs shouldn't be off lead at night - native animals, getting lost, dingoes (not sure where you were), annoying other campers..........
  21. I like my dogs to give me a little kiss to the nose when I ask for it, but our new dog has this habit each time you pick her up in your arms of giving you the biggest wettest licks to your neck - that feels so gross!! She also licks the backs of legs when you get out of the shower - that feels gross too! So no I don't think I really like them licking me :D Though I am quite happy to share my icecream with them every now and again......
  22. So sorry for Lilli and Larry. I really hope Lilli gets well soon and that Larry will come limping home to you....
  23. Oh what a terrible, terrible accident. I am so sorry for your brother. Please pass on our condolences to him and yourself. He must be shattered.
