I took mum's one eyed shih tzu to a groomer once and neglected to point out she was one eyed, thinking it would become apparent pretty quick, I left and half an hour later had 15 missed calls from her asking if Petunia had one eye when I dropped her off and how she had sifted through the bathwater to find it and couldn't...it was a 5 year old scar, very old and very much closed over. Not sure what she planned to DO if she found the eye though...they don't just pop back in. We have seen some shockers.

I think being the runt already she is at a disadvantage, so my best suggestion would be to think seriously about not doing that to her body, or the future pups. If you DO want to breed dogs there are some really awesome resources here and some of the experienced people here can point you in the direction of doing it the right way and where to start getting yourself registered. I believe it is a looong, hard road and not one I envy! Haha.

Natural Remedies For Excitable Dog
Steph M replied to Waggy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A good trainer! :) There's lots of cool settling techniques some on here have, but training and reinforcement much better than natural remedies. -
You could hop.on Google Scholar and have a look.at some.studies on large breed puppy diet and development before saying its not important to have a scientifically controlled diet. There's lots there and easy found.

There is a lot of evidence to back up the info given about careful feeding. Please don't dispense anecdotes as fact, so you got lucky. There are a lot of dogs fed whatever is going around who DO suffer the effects and it is irresponsible to advise otherwise.

I don't like it and I don't like seeing it. We live in a reasonably metro area and seeing dogs poorly secured going down freeways at 100k an hour leaves me cold. Also hearing dogs bark their asses off all the way along the road or whine with stress makes me angry too. May as well put my dog on the bloody roof racks. Secure them and if the dog doesn't like it, for gods sake don't do it.

Definitely use the run! Play games in there, set up a bed in there and lots of meals in there! Its failsafe!
-
It worked for us, but certainly doesn't mean it is a guaranteed win for you guys, just trying to think of easy to try things before you have to resort to building a run or similar. Sucks having drivey dogs sometimes!

Have you thought about a hot wire along the fenceline? You can get these as cheaply as $50-60 on Ebay, but if she's determined she will push through a mild zap.

We often take our goons camping along the murray river, most campsites are awesome. Usual rules apply of course, dogs on lead unless specified and enjoy having no space at all in your tent...hahaha
-
That's all of mine, haha. They all have names for every day, names for when they're in trouble (full names or extensions usually) and nicknames like butthead, boof, stinkbutt etc. Haha. If it helps they all answer to all of the above? Hahaha.

We have a hector the cat and I can assure you it passes the yell test. Haha.

I have never licked my dog, tbh. Haha.

YAY KIRTY! How beautiful are they, and she is a natural! You must be thrilled!

Does Your Dog Sleep Through The Night Without An Outside Trip?
Steph M replied to kamuzz's topic in General Dog Discussion
I posted a thread on this a while back, Gus at 2 just insisted he needed the 3am wee. He seems to have grown out of it and become a marathon sleeper, of course now I'm up every hour for a wee...haha. Rosie will sleep through the night but if you're not up at 6am that's it. I suspect a large portion of this is to do with her winter time ninja wees, where you realise its cold and do the smallest, fastest wee possible to get back inside quickly. Sigh. -
I think generally the aim is not to inhibit the capacity to bite, but to avoid getting to the point where the dog is so stimulated he needs to bite. A muzzle would be a better idea, but still would use this in conjunction with a one on one trainer. I would worry using a head collar in that way as dog is still stimulated and lashing out but can't get the desired affect, which just increases frustration.

A chest harness might be good, our retriever has a chest harness at the moment as he can be all over the shop and I don't want to get bowled over while pregnant, but can I suggest the best tool you can have in your arsenal is a really good trainer? Sounds like both dogs could use a little bit of training and if you'd like some suggestions I am sure the wonderful people here can help you out. :)

Gus has a little white patch where his cheek wart was removed, I was about to say just that. Perhaps the collar rubbed and has scarred a little?
-
I was wondering that myself? Wouldn't you have kept walking when he first assulted their dog, rather than stop and wait for him to whip out his junk and try and do it again? Of course, I'm not a dude so I don't know how long it would take to, expose ones self? I think I would be in a bit of shock. That is the last thing anyone would ever expect, right?!

Stay Loyal And Meals For Mutts Food
Steph M replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You'd be surprised how much he is getting, I think. :) -
I would have kicked that man right in the penis.

You can take a dummy! And he will be a star of sorts, probably will ditch me when it is least convenient for me to grab him and take off with his toy to find the dryest person there and try to woo them into throwing his toy, and when they lean down he will shake stinky dog water in their faces. It's his MO and he thinks I'm not on to him...

Facebook link I just signed myself and Gus up. Should be hilarious in itself. I know a few DOLers were interested in something in Melbourne, good time to show support! :)
