An excerpt from Kathy Kopellis McLeod's "dominance - do's and don'ts Beds and couches These pieces of furniture don’t spoil dogs; people spoil dogs. Access to beds and couches doesn’t create aggressive dogs. There are plenty of aggressive dogs that sleep on the floor and many well natured dogs that sleep on beds. The notion that in order to have a respectful relationship with your dog one should not allow their dog on the bed or couch is pointless. Countless dogs that are allowed these privileges are well behaved, responsive to commands, are attentive and will move off when are told to do so without aggressive displays. Despite the myriad of information available, your dog isn’t plotting how to topple you off your throne. Non-compliance is often due to uncertainty or simply a lack of good training. erm... I was going to mention collars and leads but remembered this is a family friendly forum, so I won't mention it

Kathy Kopellis McLeod has a little book on common "dominance" myths and the dog on the bed is one that she debunks as well as eating before your dog, walking in the door before your dog and other "dominance" crap that gets spouted all too often :D

Cheers Jumabaar, yeah we will just try and give him enrichment in different ways. An yep, the Medical Pet Shirt was a great find, I cannot recommend them enough, especially at around $26!

Aww thanks so much :)
-
and today this morning he is the grinch who stole "how the grinch stole Christmas"
-
Thanks VM Yeah, I suppose another weeks rest will probably be safer. The looney has started doing the zoomies around the house at breakneck speed and he has started stealing things he shouldn't which is a good sign that he is getting back to his old self LOL Earlier in the week

Thanks Perse The stitches are hidden and don't need to be removed (according to the vet)

Hiya It has been exactly 7 days since Ronin had surgery for neutering including cryptorchidism. He has been recovering really well and didn't miss a meal (apart from the fasting) I have been giving him small walks for the last 4 days and feel his is busting to have a run with his mate at the park. When do you think it would be okay for this?

Wolf Pack For My Wolf Aka Belgian Shepherd
Yonjuro replied to Ivory & Beau's topic in General Dog Discussion
Cool, that is what I have but yet to use. -
You took the words right out of my mouth :) Ronin had a cough a little while back that didn't seem too serious but had be keeping a close watch on him. I gave him a teaspoon of TA36 Jarrah honey three times a day in between meals and some high potency vitamin C for 6 days. Everything cleared up really well. Probably don't need the Vit C, but I was unsure if it might have been some allergen causing it, a short course will certainly not hurt. Natural Animal Solutions make the Vit C that I bought and would recommend this. Obviously this suggestion is not to replace vet diagnosis. Mankua or Jarrah will be the best in my opinion, the honey must be raw and unprocessed. I hope things improve.

I think this is exactly what you need - it's even called the Houdini Harness :D http://indi-dog.co.uk/20mm-dog-harnesses?product_id=92

Woohoo! Great news!!!

... just a thought - if the pavement is too hot for the mushers secret to be effective then in my opinion it is too hot for the dog to be out walking during these hours. While boots will offer far better protection they will also reduce the amount of heat able to be released via the paws.

Oh, gosh, it is so stressful when your dog has swallowed something they shouldn't. Have you got any slippery elm handy? I used it when my boy swallowed a bit of plastic. I have also read a vet's blog where he stated that Slippery Elm has save a number of dogs from potentially fatal blockages. Not saying that the wrap and clip will be a bad one. I think that she will probably pass it without too much problem and I don't think the metal clip will cause problems. Wishing all the best.

It would be cool if you could rig up a shallow pool with a drain so you can just fill on very hot days and not worry about water quality. One of those sail shade cloths would also be good. Perhaps a hammock or two would be nice. Maybe a jumping hoop and a seesaw??? That's about all I can think of right now.

Trying To Find The Breeder With Herizon Prefix
Yonjuro replied to SoCares Wyong ACF's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's the Kennel Facebook page not a personal page. The page shows dog images amongst the most puerile of images. The bloke might be wonderful and the dogs fantastic but really, the kind of people looking for a dog and then think that page is cool, are not the type that should be owning powerful breeds in my opinion :) I would run a mile if I was looking at breeders of these dogs. Maybe I am just getting old? :D -
I have nothing against small dogs, I have previously owned a Maltese Terrier and my recently passed dog was a mini schnauzer - both amazing and wonderful dogs and they still frequent my dreams I will freely admit that I previously did not see the big deal about little dogs barking and growling at bigger dogs and I was probably one of those ignorant owners that we talk about. Thankfully I am a great deal more understanding and knowledgeable about dogs than previously. I can also appreciate that sometimes when a small dog owner laughs when their dog behaves poorly it is sometimes due to the owner feeling anxious, stressed or worried - a laugh doesn't always indicate humour or frivolity. My dog is still a puppy 9.5 months and gets very excited when he sees a dog and is walked around the neighbourhood. I usually cross the road so as to not stress the other owners. If the other owner has a calm smaller dog and they show keenness to meet Ronin I will bring him over and kneel down to pat them both using the word 'gentle' softly to my boy. There is no doubt a 24kg husky looks intimidating with ears forward and tail up. They can also be very vocal which is hard to read by many. This combined with his super excitement to meet people and dogs makes it a challenge in our training. After puppy school we employed a trainer who we used to see on a weekly basis for a few months and now fortnightly, so we are actively being educated and working hard on helping my boy be a good canine citizen. So all that this waffle means, is that I can understand some peoples reactions to dogs both small and large. My job is to protect my own and the space around him, this protection includes not letting him retaliate and hurt a kamikaze small dog off lead. I have said this before but if a small dog attacks mine and gets hurt in the process, there is no doubt that I will get the blame because of my dog's size and appearance and possibly get declared dangerous. Congrats to anyone that got through this post of mine

Would this by any chance be a dog called 'Fluffy'? We've had the same problem, but if you don't look (nor your dog, you have to do a 'look at me' command) at it it doesn't tend to come over. Also if it does start a loud 'uh uh!' stops it in it's tracks.... So annoying though, I've worked so hard with my 'little terrier' on her reactivity. Her owner doesn't seem to get it, she told me 'we live right there' one time like that made it alright and then another time she held a screaming 'fluffy' and made it 'wave' at my two so they could become friends........ : O LOL I think it is called Fluffy I will do the Uh uh next time :) It drives me bonkers with dogs off lead on the streets. I will probably have words if it happens again. I really don't want the poor little thing to get hurt by a car or dog, especially mine.

I was at the off lead park the other day and a guy came in with a westie (I love Westies by the way) his dog is snarling at the fence and he looks at my Husky and asks "if my dog is alright ?" I replied that yes he is, and asked him "if his was?"... he kind of looked at me like I was crazy. He then comes in and his dog charges mine, snapping snarling and lunging... it was very very full on. My dog snarled back but I removed him quickly so nothing could escalate. He pulled out his lead and was about to belt his Westie. I told him DONT! He left but later came back by himself and apologised about the incident. There is also a lady that lives across the road from me that has a SWF which has had a go at my dog twice, she is a knuckle-head and continues to walk her dog off lead on the streets. The other day it tore across the road to get at my leashed dog. A car was coming and I just watched in horror. It literally must have missed by 1 or 2cm. I was in shock. The woman called her dog back and I just showed her with my fingers how close it was. She was distraught so I didn't take it any further. My point is that if anything happened to these small dogs, my Husky would certainly get the blame. I am lucky that he is very non-reactive but he is also very powerful and I dread the day when some dumb owner has a small dog actually get his teeth on mine, I am sure it would be game over While a husky doesn't have as much of a stigma as "Bull breeds" (for lack of a better term) some people still think that I am walking a wolf!

Sorry to hear about the extent of the injuries. Thanks for coming here to let us know the full story, based on what you say I would also be outraged at the Police for their conduct with this incident.

Feeding Coconut In Non Oil Form
Yonjuro replied to Ivory & Beau's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would mix at around 2 parts oil to one part turmeric, so a teaspoon of coconut oil will yield half a teaspoon of turmeric. I suppose you could increase or lessen the ratio depending on what you want to treat. Possibly closer to 1:1 for severe arthritis, or 3:1 for skin and coat. -
Parents State Dogs Responsible For Critical Injuries To Toddler
Yonjuro replied to j's topic in In The News
Off topic... At our local park fenced in off lead park there are always big dogs running and chasing at full pelt. I am a martial arts teacher and now naturally have my knees slightly bent whenever standing around. I always pass this tip onto people at the park when they are concerned about getting knocked over or breaking a leg. I suggest this almost every time I am at the park. This is a good idea for people to do as it keeps you on the balls of your feet and allows you to move quickly and if his absorb a large amount of impact :) I know one lady who had a hip replacement and another has had a broken leg You only need to unlock your knees a bit, a big bend is not needed or recommended. -
Maybe try Mushers Secret, it is a wax formula that creates a barrier to protect the feet.
