  1. Hello, I had been doing a bit of reading about dog vaccinations and how regularly they are actually required and that they might have negative side effects/be a waste of money and a vaccine etc. Monty needs his booster from his puppy vaccines, but I'm undecided whether we should re-vaccinate Scrappi yet. He is turning 8 and has had annual vaccines his whole life until this year. I'm not sure which brand/type our normal vet uses and if it is different but Monty was done with Nobivac DHP and KC in Jan 2016 by the RSPCA. I read on the Nobivac website that just requires pup vaccines and then adult booster then it lasts at least 3 years or something? Would love to hear others opinions/how often everyone else does theirs. I've heard that they used to be considered annual by the company, and that many vets keep them annual to get people to take their dogs for annual checkups because otherwise a lot of people wouldn't, so that's kind of understandable. But regardless I would take mine at least annually anyway. Thank you ???? Edit: also what is the difference between these DHP & KC and C5 vaccination? Are the C5 still reccomended annually?
  2. Thanks Paul, I didn't see this earlier. He LOOOOVES the taste of coconut oil. Only problem then is using it topically he tries to lick it off, not sure if that would be considered rewarding the licking so we try to distract him if we put it on. My Dad was sold some coconut oil in Thailand by this funny old man who told him it had all these uses and it was only $1 a bottle or something so he bought it because the man was hilarious. Anyway he's been using it melted as body, face, hand and head moisturiser, I think for shaving with/as aftershave moisturiser, as lip balm etc, he swears by the stuff now. In Thailand at a shelter we visited they do applications of tumeric and coconut oil mix to fix skin infections and the like, personally haven't tried that though. After all Spring & Summer, this week Scrappi only just got an itch, plus he has yeasty paws from licking them, we washed him with aloveen, paws with a medicated shampoo like maleseb (?), flea treated and slathered all the itchy bits in coconut oil but it hasn't seemed to help so will ask the vet at their check up tomorrow.
  3. a quick fix-it for ant bites...rub a piece of cut onion onto the bite; the ouchie will disappear quick as a flash I didn't see this before sorry, that's a cool tip to keep for future reference! :)
  4. Fully agree No I agree. I don't know RSPCA would do a good job, let alone have resources, but I was thinking maybe the standard so you could run your own business but would avoid the dodgy kennels being able to run? I'm not sure, how do you currently start/own a kennel? I imagine you have to buy a license but do you need to prove anything like your quality of care? Also you would need council approval for kennels to be built to a certain standard I suppose.
  5. Yes that is very understandable. Of course there are going to be accidents needing cleaning, and sticking on top of that is hard. I know there are plenty of kennel owners like yourself that put a lot of love & care into your business & your customers. Then there are seriously inferior kennels that are either over capacity so staff can barely handle them, or the owners somehow manage to do things which seem quite hard to do accidentally... Like let that dog die of heatstroke (would have to be very hot in that kennel for that to happen), and the dog would be panting and acting funny so you'd definitely notice even just walking past I should think. Or there was also one where the dogs all got let offleash together to play, and surprise surprise a dog got mauled. I'm sure nothing like that would happen at your own kennels! And whilst you definitely don't want anyone coming and running your show, there are certain establishments that need it I believe. Not necessarily the RSPCA in my opinion either, but something along the lines of a standard would be an improvement to take away the vastly different standards of kennels. I've heard some of you are losing business due to people opting for pet sitters instead to save the hassle and worry too, perhaps this could help? I'm not sure.
  6. Kaos isn't the best at the moment and I think this winter is going to really hit her hard. As much as I want a puppy, we have decided to let her live her old age out in peace She is still also dog aggressive and I would hate for her to ruin a new pup. Poor Kaos, hoping that the winter treats her nicely. It's sad seeing dogs get old Wishing the OP good luck with their pup!
  7. Some of you might be interested in signing. ???? Sorry for the super long URL ???? https://www.change.org/p/rspca-nsw-registry-and-regulation-and-a-standard-code-of-practise-in-all-boarding-kennels?recruiter=161830059&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink
  8. Yeah he is a bit of a dick, I've seen some of his other videos and he needs to start acting maturely and stop acting like he knows everything. You don't learn if you have an attitude like that and an open mind! Saw his interview with Grisha Stewart and he was acting a bit disrespectfully despite having somewhat similar views. So I disagree with some of what he says but I hadn't seen the video by that Dr who published the original theory. Not everything commonly believed in the past is a lie, but it isn't necessarily true either as science/psychology/ethics/morals and trends are all developing and changing, that's how the world works. So commonly believed scientific knowledge or common practices are sometimes improved upon or retracted like this one. Also don't be so pessimistic about the future of dog training, there are many young trainers who are brilliant at what they do. I am interested in training, not sure about becoming a professional one myself but it's something I definitely want to get into more once I've finished my studies/work.
  9. Does it add any new information apart from the words of an enthusiastic kid in his bedroom? New studies? Wolves and dingos and other dogs - do sometimes work together in packs when there are enough food resources to sustain them but they're mostly packs of family groups - not random strangers. At the park, and beach - I have noticed that my dog has her "special friends" that she greets enthusiastically and will protect when threatened. Hence you can get one "rude" dog being ganged up on by all the friends protecting each other. But that's just my observations not a scientific study. I know it doesnt add anything but I had never seen the original video before (also never really followed that whole dominance/pack thing anyway) but thought some might be interested.
  10. I thought this was worth sharing as some people on here strongly believe in dominance based training still... I know the video by Dr Mech (the man who invented/published the Pack theory) was made in 2008 so not new to most of us, but as the book is still in circulation and I know a lot of the general public still only really know about the dominance kind of training that "you have to be alpha and the boss".
  11. Haha, just had a quick glance but that sounds pretty cool! Art & dogs my two favourite things. :-)
  12. Yes, unless they are extremely well bred, Frenchies aren't the healthiest little chaps. And with such popularity these days the BYB and puppy millers are selling them for upwards of $3,000. I've seen "rare" colours that "carry blue & fawn" for nearly $9000.... and then the new owners often have to go and pay even more for vet bills in a few months time. Not sure of how long the poor pup will have to deal with this, but are they talking keeping him on all those meds for the rest of his life? And the prescription diet being eaten upright only? Sounds like not much fun for anyone
  13. Maybe if you are really worried about contacting council, you could do a letter drop to offending neighbours with the loose dogs. They might not know that it's that bad (seems like it's common near you?), and if you let them know that if it persists you will be forced to contact council which with a few offences could lead to dog being taken off them or pts. That hopefully won't have to happen but if the owners know what they are in for first they might try to stop the issue.
  14. In 2016 this happened with some renting neighbours (strange people, never spoke to anyone in a street where we're all mates and just had a NYE street BBQ/party) They had 2 border collies which one was quite sweet if you spoke to it quietly and I was very cautious how I moved near it. It would lie in the middle of the road and I frequently would let it back in its yard as it got shut out. But they also had over the course of the year about 6 or 7 pigging dogs kept in cages out the back, there was a huge maybe Dane x Arab x pitty or something which was escaping and scaring the kids and pooing in people's yards and owners couldn't care less. It was in the front yard next door and their kids were scared of it hiding in my yard, I was calm and not worried, I thought the kids were just scared because of what he looked like and he was huge, I calmly approached it (no eye contact and took a circle around it not straight at it) and was about 5m away and it growled at me and was being very aggressive. Had to report to council and the dog was taken away... had a few more incidents with their other dogs too but this fella was not a very nice dog. Would've been 50kg too, could stand up with his paws up on the fence and was pretty tall! Thankfully they've moved out. Long story short we just avoid houses like that, not worth the hassle. Could carry some treats like previously mentioned or some sort of dog stopper. Silly string? Don't know if it's toxic, don't want to kill someone's dog...! I have a carabiner on our leashes so if I ever see a loose dog up ahead or something I use the carabiner to wrap the leash around a pole or similar and tie my dogs up while I sort out the other thing. (There were a few times a foxie got loose and I had to go and tell the owners because they couldn't find her)
  15. Everyone's resolutions sound great/lovely. Mine for Monty is to hopefully fingers crossed get his behaviour under control when out in public, it's quite hard to explain but he is reactive with some dogs. I doubt he has ever learned manners or how to read some dogs' body language except for a few of his friends. I've tried so hard to stop it/help him be more confident and polite, but we need an extra helping hand. (he was in the pound for a few months before we adopted him as a 6mth old.) My Christmas present was to have a trainer come in every week for a few weeks to work with us. :) Scootaloo; Good luck! That sounds awesome! Sars; Aww that's a nice thing to do Thistle; Go Thistle! (and Mum!) Maddy; Poor Shitty Whippet, hoping she cheers up & a new friend comes along soon. Little Gifts; Nosework sounds great! And yes, it's a nice thing to make sure you have some lovely up to date photos and memories for when they go. Time sneaks up on you with dogs, sometimes Scrappi seems like such an old man but really he's only 7, whenever he sees poor old Banjo next door Scrap turns into a little pup again and Banjo has to do the "Get off me you rowdy pup" that Scrappi does to Mo! PK; Good luck that Malcom is feeling better
  16. However, the only thing I've ever had to help one pass is long strands of grass, and that's pretty rare. I had to do that with Monty yesterday hahaha. That was somehow a first for us! As with the pigs ear swallowing, your pup should be ok :-) Just keep an eye on the bowel motions and if he seems to have a very sore tummy for some reason, he should be ok though. Monty was a terror with eating things he shouldn't. He has chewed (eaten some) of a torch, 3 ant rid baits which I had to check if they were poisonous (they aren't), 2 mouse traps (had peanut butter on them and were hidden where we thought he couldn't get to!), his home made agility jump, a bit of the decking on my Grandmother's veranda, 1kg of next door neighbour's dog's dry kibble, many toys, his bed and most recently tucked into a box of those foam packing peanuts!! How he hasn't died I don't know... He also was playing under the hedge in July and got stung by a wasp/bee and had a major allergic reaction! Also spent almost the entirety of October munching on mulberries! And crunches the macadamias when we aren't looking ????Naughty monkey has been stopped these days but we could've relabeled a "staffy bully terror" instead a few months ago haha.
  17. Happy New Year's (eve...) Everyone!! Just curious, does anyone have anything they would like to try to accomplish/work towards with their dogs in 2017? :)
  18. No pups available... and No breeders registered here on dogzonline... ????
  19. People are very good liars. Ask any one of the people here who work in rescue, I would say all have been burned or almost burned at least once. Yes, exactly. Rules are rules and even if they wanted to they wouldnt allow you to have an entire rescue dog. Anyone can say that and sweet talk their way into getting a dog which they would then use to add to the too many dogs in pounds. I saw someone recently rehoming their entire poodle pup, advertising it as a Christmas gift ???? Already had one home, doesn't need to go to a possibly unstable home as a surprise Xmas gift, the recipient may not be responsible enough to monitor an entire bitch and might not be able to afford a spay (let alone food, meds etc...) Dogs aren't good surprise gifts for most people... End up with a litter + mum all dumped in a pound.
  20. Had nothing better to do hahaha, so here's a few vaguely scruffy sighthound-ish pups from Petrescue... :) https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/497092 https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/497367 https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/449982 https://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/501193
  21. He's not there now... I can't believe the Maltese crosses in there... are they all surrendered or may some be reclaimed by owners if just lost? Yeah, he's still there, I'll try and post a screenshot. And yeah! Crazy amount of malteses, maybe they were surrendered/seized off a Maltese breeder? (BYB maybe) Either that or a lot of people surrendering SWFs and Maltese crosses! (Edit: can't figure out how to attach pictures on my phone sorry)
