  1. How refreshing to read a thread exploring dog aggression without anyone getting judgemental or fearful about dogs behaviour. Aggression is a natural part of the dogs repetoire of behaviours, and sometimes its ugly. Also little dogs can be dreadful bullies, and grumpy old dogs sometimes sometimes seem to have a death wish in a pack situation. Desnt make any dogs 'bad' though, and we as their pack leaders, need to try to understand them and keep things safe. I feel so sad when i see people 'get rid of' (including pts) a dog that has beaten up another dog, regardless of the circumstances. SO glad the OP considered all things with a clear head. I also had my little dog chewed up by a long suffering larger breed, but after that (and a large vet bill) they were all able to live peacefully together, albeit I never again allowed the little dog such freedom to be a bully again (and she was more respectful anyway after that).
  2. I think my earlier point about discrediting reasonable points of veiw by characterising them in terms of extremes, is being well demonstrated in this thread. Talk about missing the point...
  3. Please dont fall into the trap of assuming that any pimped up information served up by some journo as representing the veiws of people concerned about global warming, is at all reliable. Its a standard way of discrediting perfectly reasonable points of veiw, and derailing intelligent debate, to find one extremist or nutter and make them the 'poster-person' of the issue. Its the same method used to characterise refugees as terrorists and feminists as bra-burning man-haters. Makes an entertaining story but isnt very informative. If you check out his other work, you find Andrew Bolt is a right wing climate change denier and its difficult to see how a lot of his work could be described as 'balanced'.
  4. The Japan Times. A lot of the journos are American expats. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/ Your letter would have more impact if you also have proof that they're selling endangered baby animals. God I lived there in the early 90s and I'm disheartened to see things just havent changed. I agree. A published letter (or better still, an article with pictures) is a more powerful tool than just expressing your displeasure to the shop owner (particularly if you cant speak the language). A community that has pet shops is a community that has a significant proportion of people who love pets (even if we dont like the way they do it). Being broadly judgemental will win you no supporters, but drawing attention to the tangible suffering of these helpless little guys, and others like them, may get a positive response. Good luck!
  5. Species permitted for import to Australia are listed here. http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity...import-list.pdf The fox isnt on the list, so import is not permitted.
  6. Stunning looking dogs. Given the comments on the great deal of effort that is required to establish and maintain a corded coat, I guess its reasonable to assume that when living a 'traditional' working lifestyle these poor animals dont have their coats managed as well as is necessary to avoid discomfort. Practical for human requirements, doesnt necessarily equate with practical from the dogs point of veiw. Lucky ones to have been born into homes with lots of time for coat management, or a set of clippers.
  7. So sorry for your loss Stefie. BG would have died last year if you hadnt come into her life - so you did give her a wonderful gift of life and love.
  8. I saw the thread on the Odour Go product mentioned in post 14 - everyone raves about it. So i bought some myself cos Im worried about the smell from all the dogs in my house. I chose the 'no scent' flavour - and disappointingly, my house now smells like a public toilet block after its been cleaned. Its not an unclean smell, but it is very 'municipal'. Am I doing something wrong? Are the other scents better?
  9. What a grand little lady she must have been. How wonderful for you to have had her enormous personality and delightful presence in your life. Im sorry you cant cuddle her anymore but you have so many wonderful memories, Im sure she will continue to make you smile and laugh in the future.
  10. Kelpies are such great dogs - they are beautifully put together, which helps them stay healthy and active a long time. Fabulous natures too, on the whole.
  11. Its a sad reflection on our society that a restriction like this might be enforced in this case. Presumably the weight limit was an arbitrary line in the sand to prevent people trying to accommodate huge dogs in small apartments, to the detriment of other residents. Rules like this should be treated as guidelines only and applied sensibly and with compassion. Increasingly urban property owners make it harder and harder for people to own pets - which has seriously negative implications for many people's quality of life, and the heath of our society. We all know the links between health (particularly mental health), and pet ownership. Pity the people on lower incomes who have fewer accommodation options than this person.
  12. poodlefan is right. The ACT has always had more liberal laws on many things and the organisations that might in other states, have driven BSL have always actively spoken out against it in the ACT (although, the RSCA had to wait for Hugh Wirth to go before they could openly oppose BSL). Both the RSpCA and DAS regularly have pitbulls available for adoption. ACT has its fair share of moron dog-owners for sure, but i wouldnt be holding my breath for the ACT to get on to the mindlessly reactionary BSL bandwagon. i suspect the law makers and enforcers in ACT have got better things to do than persecute innocent animals.
  13. No - not harder than other dogs to rehome. Yes, I had fewer enquiries for the deaf ones, but in each case I had people who were specifically atracted to the dog BECAUSE it was deaf. These people tended to have thought about the implications and were high quality enquiries. Each one had another dog who could be the deaf ones ears - and I think thats fairly important too. The fact that I had the training well underway, which indicated to adopters that training a deaf dog is not insurmountable, and also offered to teach the skills to the new owners as part of the adoption process, and also provided printed material on deaf dogs, made it an easier decision for adopters than it might have been. I certainly never presented the deaf ones as 'big challenges' or 'handicapped', but rather as great dogs who just needed to be managed differently. Which was the truth. I think the trick to getting these dogs into good homes, is to do all the leg work necessary to make it easy and not scary for adopters. Managing a deaf dog IS different to managing a hearing one, and there are certain things you cant do (like off-lead walking where there are hazards), but its not as all-consuming and challenging as some of the literature suggests. At least it wasnt for the ones Iv rescued.
  14. I have rescued a few deaf dogs (mostly ACDs and bull mixes) and given them very basic obedience - sit, come, wait. The article in the OPs thread is a good one and my best handy tip is to put a bell on the dog - helps to find it sometimes.
  15. Iv disliked Carrie Bitmore ever since she said that given the choice of paying a little extra for a free range egg because that would give a chook a better life, she would still choose the cheapest product. And another time (and perhaps Ill get flamed here) she defended parent's rights to hit their children, as a matter of personal choice (not for the children, obviously). She doesnt appear to have any compassion or empathy in her. Speaking of Chris Brown's statement about poodles not being effeminate, he was on another show this morning talking about his childhood standard poodle 'Claude' who used to mount the families pet sheep every morning, to the deep fascination of the local kids walking past his house to school. He said that Claude taught him a lot about sex. Onya Chris!
  16. Drunk is a weak excuse, and also unlikely. To hit a target with a bow and arrow needs a fair degree of concentration and coordination.

    Ellie

So sorry for your loss Horus. If theres a doggy heaven my dally boys Rip and Boris will be able to show Ellie round and point out all the best things to dig up, chew or chase. And they can do all their dally smiles together.
  18. parvo poo smells a particular way due to the high blood content in it. Blood contains a lot of iron and i think thats why some people think iparvo poo smells metallic. The blood content is why its distinctively dark too.
  19. Beatrice Im so sorry. I know how hard you have tried to give Bear whatever she needed, to protect and provide for her. And now she is at peace. She was very lucky to have met you. As are many other dogs whos lives you have changed, for the better. Take care of yourself.
  20. Im delighted for this man and his dog. And Im sure Blacktown ratepayers would prefer their council had more important things to do than persecute battlers and their pets. I see a previous poster thought the RSPCA supports BSL - if thats the case its not universal. The RSPCA in ACT currently has a pure APBT available on their website available for adoption to the public. Hats off to them.

In reply to you, I quote jdavis' well-put post: KKDD -If you are goin to support PETA, perhaps you should re-think your membership of a puerbred dog forum. I know many members here are people who merely own & love dogs, be they purebred or "mutts", but many of us are people who breed and/or show dogs, PAY to belong to DOL and find comments such as yours extremely offensive. Speaking of extremists who go off half-cocked... Im not sure where I have stated support for PETA, I smply commented that Iv not seen any evidence to support the extreme anti-PETA position of many DOLers which is quite often expressed in (ironically) violent terms. The thread started with a post about PETA poisoning dog's water, with no factual material to back it up. Other claims Iv read on DOL about what PETA does or wants to do, appear to be long and apocalyptic assumptions drawn selectively from published material, although I agree there is some stuff they appear to advocate that most of us would disagree with. But the material that has been posted in reponse to my post doesnt justify the extremeness of veiws and statements I see expressed on DOL. And now its being suggested that I should leave DOL? You crack me up.

I see a lot of stuff on DOL slamming PETA, but Im yet to see any real evidence to support that veiw. The information presented as evidence of PETA being evil is almost always from sources explicitly compiled to discredit PETA or just hearsay. It may be that some members of PETA are evil nutters, but then many organisations have those, and its not really fair to present their veiws as indicative of the organisations philosophy or activities. It may also be that PETA has some extremely disgruntled enemies who go to a lot of effort (such as setting up domains entitled petakillsanimals) to grind their axe. Its hard to tell whats going on with the sort of information that makes its way onto DOL.
  23. Would it be worth trying the various husky rescuers again? Now that there is only one dog in need, they might have space.... Good on you for championing these dogs k9Angel. Having someone to speak up for them is their best chance...
