Fasting Before A Blood Test (canine)
kelpiecuddles replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Depends what the blood test is for, if it's not related to glucose or something like that then probably not. -
Well how nice for you that you have the proximity to something like a daycare and the expendable money to pay the fees, those of us who don't have little choice but to spend time with our dogs when we want to exercise them... And please don't call me dear, I'm not ten years old.

Whatever you do only change one thing at a time and give it time to see if things improve, if you change everything at once without giving the change enough of a chance to improve things you won't know the cause.

Seriously? The whole point of having a dog is to spend time with it, what's the point if instead of spending time with it you just billet it out to someone else. I understand some people using day care for during their work hours, etc but what's the point of having a dog if you just send it away when you otherwise would have been spending time enjoying life together? Apart from that I'd much rather be in a one on one/two situation with my own dog where I can properly supervise than leave my dog with a stranger and hope they have enough sense to read their body language!

My just turned four year old pointed at it and said iit was a tick and I said it wasn't, to which she responded with "Well it's a palacite of some sort..." Does that help you? LOL

I'd say mostly her size(height), my basset hound is actually a bigger dog than my kelpie by weight and length but is shorter by height and despite them both receiving the same type of socialisation and being great with other friendly dogs it's always the kelpie that other dogs have a go at. I put it down to the kelpie being just that bit taller so small dogs are mre likely to interpret her as standing over them even if she isn't

Yeah it's funny isn't it. I only ever did one herding day with Sascha, just couldn't afford to keep going but if I want the chooks in the coop I can point her where I want her and she'll help me put them in having never had any formal training, It's amazing how they just seem to know what to do. -

I still remember watching my first herding trial with my 9 month old kelpie sitting on my lap, they were setting up and I'd been chatting to one of the old blokes there so I asked him, "How do you know if a dog has a real potential and interest for herding?" He told me to wait a second, then the sheep ran across from the holding yard to the arena about 30 metres away but in full view of Sascha, within seconds she was whining and wriggling to get off my lap, her ears were up and she knew exactly where those sheep were... the bloke told me he thought she'd 'do ok' and gave me a wink LOL She lives with free range rabbits, chooks, etc, etc and that was the first time I'd ever seen her do anything like that! -

I guess it would be the one that gets to the recognition finish line first! -
Nope, other dog was a GSD X kelpie. Just thought it was an amazing coincidence that there was a(nother?) Mal called Scooby! ETA: Also I was pretty sure nekhbet was from Vic...

I've seen that page before but to be honest I'm not sure how active the breeder group is. The webpage was set up in 2007 and still read 'under construction' on the home page and their forum hasn't had any activity that I can see since late last year. -

I think what it comes down to is whether the bull arab breeders are actually making efforts to develop a proper standard, it's all well and good to have a registry but if the 'type' of the dogs being registered is all over the place and there isn't a proper common goal other than working ability then they aren't going to make any progress towards gaining recognition through someone like the ANKC -

So do the serious labradoodle/cobberdog breeders though, but they are no different in that regard to staffy breeders for example in that there are squillions of them around being backyard bred and only a limited number who are doing it properly. -
"permissable" In The Breed Standard
kelpiecuddles replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I guess permissible doesn't always translate to the look that a particular judge may prefer... -
Have you tried asking your local store? We only keep the plain ones in stock but we'll happily special order the others for people.

You weren't in Nowra today were you??? I was sitting down watching my children with one eye and a couple holding a lovely malinois plus another dog with the other eye, Mal's name was Scooby... :p

Nz Huntaway Is Officially A Recognized Breed!
kelpiecuddles replied to kiwifeathers's topic in General Dog Discussion
My kelpie comes from working lines and is a pet only BUT I put a lot of effort in to her in her first year to ensure she had a good off switch and would ne a good family dog. The most working she does for me is herding the chooks back in to their coop :p -
Tough night here too, excuse the grotty doona, it's due to be washed ;)

I know she's looking for breed feedback but there is a second option, which is to look through rescue for a small breed dog with the type of coat she wants and a known temperament. If she's happy to have a dog that's not a tiny puppy any more then she'd have a lot to choose from, there's a good chance some would suit.

Adopting From A Pound
kelpiecuddles replied to animals's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Just wanted to point out that adopting from rescue doesn't mean a pound dog misses out, it means that foster carer is then available again to take another pound dog in :) -
I'd be interested to know how they have factored in the proven reduced health outcomes for communities without accessible walking paths. It has been shown that communities where there are no footpaths have much poorer health outcomes than those that do. By restricting dog owners from accessing footpaths they are liable to create poorer health in their community and open themselves up to increased need for medical and other health facilities in order to compensate. But hey, who wants to look at the bigger picture!

I Can't Understand Why
kelpiecuddles replied to twodoggies2001's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Are the loose teeth on the side he's chewing on or the side he's not chewing on? If they are on the side he's not chewing on they may be bothering him and causing him to avoid that side, hence the one sided chewing
