I guess every pound and council suits itself. There was a shocker case in Vic where a bull terrier was euthed on day 1, and the owner tried for a long time with legal action but was just stone-walled. Then there were the ones who went to the sales pen and new ownership then the original owner turned up and wanted their dog back (forget the details of why they didn't find dog earlier, not doing blame and finger pointing here, just how things can go pear shaped). Between council rules and social media cowboys there is probably a lot of grey area without absolute right or wrong, both can have a best and worst outcome.

Circumstances vary - 20 yrs ago I took lost dogs to the RSPCA (who were also the pound-kennels for a couple of councils). Then I found out about the short time with no advertising involved for the large square headed dogs, and unofficial policy was a reduced time before euth. (A lot of us were naive about the RS years ago). When Piper and Frodo tunneled out and did a runner they were picked up and dropped at a vet 20km away. We were called to pick them up from a different pound, the cost was something like $300 for pound fees, plus a separate $300 bill in the mail from Council for having "dogs at large". Grateful all round, but it was an expensive exercise. In country towns in Vic the facebook system works well, a photo, word of mouth by phone or fb, dogs reunited. Vet can still check for microchip without having to involve the pound and/or council. I think it's a good system, balanced against changing staff at a pound who don't know a kelpie from a staghound or what has come in before their shift, and often people ring a pound about their dog and are told it's not there when in fact it is. Not a great system in some cases.

When Rheneas had the bad vestibular attack 3-4 years ago I don't recall any tests, the vet just "knew". I thought when I took him in that recovery could not be possible, that this would be fatal. Vet said don't give up hope I've brought them back when they've been much worse than this. He made a slow but great recovery, maybe never bounced back to his old puppy-crazy self but is now 18 and still with us. Treatment was something like sea-sick tablets - nausea control, some pain relief, importantly 'old school' re-hydration with bag and needle. @Kat05if you use the search button, there are quite a few posts with some information/experience re vestibular. (Rheneas is the Shetland Sheepdog cross in my avatar photo). Hope your Friday appointment is helpful for your staffy, let's know what the vet thinks.

They do have a point - small species birdlife has reduced dreadfully in the ten years we've been here. I don't entirely blame the Noisies, they have certainly played a part though, as have the huge colonies or gangs of magpies, and the occasional harsh drought conditions. But I have seen the Noisy Miners destroy smaller birds nest, kill baby birds, harass birds enough to prevent them nesting let alone breeding. I don't support the idea of killing any native bird, duck hunting is nauseating, and I dislike the way cockatoos and ravens and ibis are culled 'informally' for being inconvenient or income reducing. There must be a better way of giving the small bush birds a chance, I can't see a solution.

I don't doubt that, it would change anyone's outlook in so many ways. Fear-trauma of that kind can be coped with and managed, but we never really "get over it" and it colours the way we look at people and our daily environment. Not being constantly reactive, but aware - 'risk management' becomes second nature.

And Teebs if you had, it likely would have made no difference. Because people believe what they want to believe, and all the explanation and logic you could have given them would not have changed what they want to believe.

Sounds like a stupid sale term to go with manufactured designer/crossbred dogs. Its stand-alone meaning is unclear and needs a following paragraph to spell it out. (It could equally mean guardian for life, never to be challenged). Pity that purebred breeders are being caught up in it, makes them look equally dodgy and evasive of clear terminology. 'Breeder's Terms' is a clear and upfront description for new owners that terms and conditions apply - why change it unless the intent is to confuse?

Probably not Sandy - a lot of dirty legislation in connection with livestock has been pushed through under the Covid cloud, not noticed by most people.

And there's also some good thought-pieces on the Clarksons Farm (Prime/Amazon) series on how unsustainable farming and bird/insect extinctions are leading to the food crisis Saladino writes about.

He's lovely Kirislin. Cream and a touch of light contrast makes me think of bee-sting cake which is heavenly. Not suggesting Bee-sting as a name, and hope the little fellow is over his sore paw. Would have suggested creme brulee, only Dogsandthemob got in first. But in general I don't really like food or drink names for animals, most of ours have people-names, including the sheep and goats.

It's not always about the money (also speaking around 20 years ago) - when we took Piper the Rottweiler as a young adult from the RSPCA we were second-in-line to someone who let slip to a friend but was overheard by us and a staff member that she looked like a handy dog for their backyard/home-based truck repair business. So their application was rejected and mine accepted.

Disturbing. And makes you wonder what else Councils are not obliged to divulge.

Grass allergy is a misery - would he wear little boots at outside time?

We have had Dysons (not the Animal, earlier models) and just too many filter/head niggle problems. But still have my Henry Junior (made in the UK) which is now between 15-20 years old. Still does a great job, hair and the works. If I need to replace it will be with another Henry, love them. Would that include Aloveen then - more than one vet clinic has recommended it for a skin probs dog. Makes you wonder.

I liked all the Fidos range, depends on the purpose but esp. their Puppy and Kitten. They had a good oaten one also. My vet always suggests anything oat based, milk or meal, for problem skin/coats -Aloveen the main one I think.

It's not just dogs - I'm a bit gobsmacked on some poultry groups pages etc - so many people cooking for their chooks. Morning porridges, baked cake/slice things. Not happening here: when I feed from a feedstore bag I'm paying for something formulated by a livestock nutritionist, not a twee decision of giving them 'lollies' and ignoring the science.

That's exciting. How long is the commute - more than an hour each way? Will both be open - "working two jobs"?? (I like the vicuna nose - so different to an alpaca).

Lost quite a few 100s of kilos to birds this year, plums, apples, pears, almonds, cherries, peaches, apricots. Usually don't care: this year I care. Have only netted a couple of fig trees and will be most upset if the rats decide to try them. We are fruit fly free but it is all around so a matter of time, have to start being proactive about it all. Sheep have enjoyed the "cockatoo attack" bitten windfalls.

This a/noon I drove 40k to buy figs because our trees are way not ripe yet. And you are feeding them to pig!!: nothing against Trouble, but please explain. (Home-grown figs?? can't wait for mine to ripen this year, looking good). Love Don, he gets better and better.
