  1. Do you think its possible that someone near you could have had an incident with a white bull looking breed and reported it to council? they may have gone through their records and come up with your dog and put 2 and 2 together and got 5. When you registered him did you register him as a Bandogge? or is he registered as a Mastiff X? Either that or perhaps someone has it in for your dog for some reason or another? possibly he may have barked at them through the fence or something and they have blown the issue out of proportion? There's no telling what someone could say or do If they decide they don't like a dog that lives near them. He just looks like your average Bully mix to me. I wouldn't call him "Dangerous" on looks, then again People call my dog Dangerous on his "Breed"and "looks"tonnes of times, so just because you cant think of an incident... might be worth thinking about have you ever had an altercation with anyone that lives near you... over anything, not necessarily involving your dog, because If you don't know of any incident I cant think of a reason why you would get a Dangerous Dog Declaration for "Nothing" out of the Blue.
  2. It depends on where you are but this guy - http://www.getthevet.com.au/fees.html is absolutely wonderful, very caring and knowledgeable.
  3. My Dog Is entire, he has no agression problems, he isn't roaming the streets impregnating bitches, and I don't BYB and never will.. I don't see why I should be made to desex my dog unless its for his own health. These dogs that need rescuing, the thousands and thousands of them - they are not the product of undesexed dogs roaming around making litters left right and centre, it is the result of a surplus of a consumer must have "product", that everyone "has to have" till the novelty wears off. The killing stops when the impulse buying because "its cute" stops. Not by forcing the majority to pay for the minorities trying to make a quick buck from a 'pup.
  4. I have the same as Smooch and Erny, I love it. Its unique and very good value and was so fast! I also have one of the older style Bow wow tags (not bow wow a similar company i cant remember anymore, but i know ive had it for years - brass with black fill and its never worn out in 6 years)
  5. Generally speaking I should have said poor supervision rather than assuming unsupervised totally, toddlers shouldn't be allowed really to get their faces right up close to a dogs, as much as a playful lick on the face might be cute, one wrong move or accidental step or movement thats misunderstood by the dog as a possible threat can end in a split second snap, that damages a child for life and ends in the death of a family pet. And it doesn't have to be a big dog or complete lack of supervision, more like ignorance really, I've seen a small child (whos parents told her to stop patting Brutus cos he was a "Big dog" and told her to "Go pat the little dog instead" the small toy poodle sitting on my aunts lap, at face height to the child, and this is a really possesive little dog, fortunatly my aunt had time to gently put her hand around the poodles mouth as the child got up from patting my dog and was right in the poodles space in a second because her parents assumed the smaller dog was safer than the big dobermann lying on the ground.
  6. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8455598/sydney-toddler-mauled-by-family-dog Same story, One of my customers said to me this morning did I hear about the toddler that was attacked by the family dog, he said it was a Dobermann? Wonder if its the same story. Wish they woudln't throw that word "mauling" around, when it says the child was bitten on the face with deep non life threatening lacerations, sounds like a sudden snap from a big dog. *sigh* why was a child left with their face so close to a dog unsupervised? Why does this stupid stuff keep happening? Poor Child and RIP Doggy.
  7. I'm so glad that those new breed legislation laws are working down there. Cos punishing the irresponsible people and enforcing preventative laws was such a stupid idea.
  8. When we moved into our current house, before Id had the fences fixed and had Brutus... the neighbors cat (A Bengal - Thing shouldn't be allowed to roam free outside anyway IMO.) used to come into our yard - rip our fly screens to pieces, let itself in the house if a door was open, steal our cats food, try to attack our cat through the windows and doors. Can you Imagine If us dog owners let our dogs do that? My Cat is fully indoors, and only goes outside on a Leash and harness. The one time she did escape after she learned to open the back fly screen door she got into a massive blue with the neighbours cat (at 3am in the morning when the owner decided to let her cat out.) - Our ran home and took us ages to realise she had even left the house cos the door had latched itself after her coming back. - all CSI like we found sticky seeds in her coat and realised she had indeed been outside. Brutus loves HER, licks her on the face, sits with her, tries to play with her etc... BUT - He considers any other cat in our yard fair game. I told the neighbour we where having a dog and that he didn't like cats he didn't know. (I don't think he would 'kill' one, but he may injure through falling over onto it and squishing it as he tried to chase it... Or cat might die of shock by being barked at and chased.) - Brutus is a Clumsy footed Clod, most cats unless extreemly fat and slow would have the advantage anyway. Not like when we had Dachshunds. I think if you don't care enough about your cat to know where it is 100% of the time if its outside your house then you shouldn't expect to declare someone else's dog dangerous/responsible for defending his own territory against your invading cat, same as neighbours who make complaints that their dogs BARK when their cats sit on the fences and stare at the dogs while staying out of reach. If my cat was attacked on MY property by someone else's Roaming Dog, or even killed on public property by a Roaming dog... then yes Id expect some action/compensation.
  9. Yep. I love the people "Oh they hate big dogs", "its because your Dogs not desexed", "its because your dog is black", "its because your dog looked at mine first", "its because you have a dog on a public footpath when I'm walking MY dog", "its because your dog is a Dobermann", "its because your dog is blah blah blah" attitude. Brutus has been attacked by so many dogs in his life I have lost count, Went for a walk on Sunday and 2 tiny dogs in the short walk where at him - we walked round a blind corner, a scruffy little terrier cross rips a kid (who wasn't watching his dog, who had his headphones on, and was trundling along expecting dog who was out of sight/control to follow) off his skateboard and nearly has Brutus by the neck before the kid regrabs the leash and scoops up the snarling ball of terror. We just kept walking, then a little bit up the road there is a woman struggling to control her mini foxie that was choking at the end of its (4 metre fully let out retractable lead) trying to bark and snarl at Brutus. And the other day I had someone who let their dog harrass Brutus on a retractable lead ACCROSS A ROAD - yes they let their lead with the dog attached to it stretch out over the road!!!!! NO, its because THEIR dog is poorly trained, poorly controlled and THEY are in denial about it. Pure and Simple. ETA: Spelling.
  10. Toy - Toy Poodle Small - Miniature Dachshund (L/H) Medium - Standard Dachshund (s/H) :-p Large - Weimeraner or of course Dobermann. Giant - Tibetan Mastiff
  11. Brutus is 6, He is docked.. I like him that way and I'm not afraid to say it. Blind Sally Can see when he is wagging his tail (and he is clearly not in any pain or detriment because of it) I also had a younger girl for a few months who was "legally docked" due sustaining a crushed tail in the welping box. What I cant stand is people who know nothing about me or my dogs actually going out of their way to cross the street to come over and abuse me for having docked dogs, I'd have a dobermann with a tail.. Its not what I prefer because I like tradition but I still love the breed and will of course deal with it, but I really think people should mind their own business... Unless your an RSPCA inspector and its your JOB to find out why and or how I have a dog with a docked tail then butt out, I don't mind curious people but straight out "where did you get that dog!?" from Joe public... no thanks. I think policing, banning, concerning over tail docking and if it is or isn't cruel, banning etc etc is just a waste of resources that could have been better spent on real cruelty issues. But that's just my opinion.
  12. OH yes, I'm very proud of Brutus at times. For the things he does that are "Bad" like ie. Not come when he is called, Stubborn, Bossy, Dominating, selective hearing etc. Times like this I woudln't trade him for any other dog in the world. He has been attacked numerous times in his life by other uncontrolled dogs (he is an entire male and not once has he ever retaliated, or started it for that matter.) He was set upon by another dog in that same shop, made him bleed and everything and he just hid behind me, poor boy. So I'm glad that he was so calm and patient with this little puppy thrust upon him. Gives me confidence for getting another puppy in the future that he may not play too rough, it lives to be seen. Mind you he is also this calm and "understanding" of little children, adults on the other hand he seems to think "your big, you can hack it." - Proceeds to jump on you and push you over. So yeah... Im so very proud that he held up his end of being a good dog. *sigh* People just dont think, no wonder there are so many "problem" dogs.. just prooves more and more its the owner 90% of the Time and not the dog.
  13. I thought the whole the dogs keep breaking the chain comment was a bit HUH? When I first moved into my new house I had my dobermann and no front fence, I had to improvise for a few days how hard is it to go to Bunnings get some heavy duty chain cut to size, good trojan hooks and make something that WON'T break not just shrug your shoulders and go oh well chains break Ill just wait to get the fences fixed? (half my post got eaten by.. space and made no sense had to fix)
  14. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/story/2012/04/02/police-investigate-sog-shooting/ OK OK, a better containment solution needs to be found while the fences are being built. But it is NOT OKAY to use a GUN in a suburban area where there are children around to Solve your problems, clearly they where trying to kill the dog, Why Else would you shoot the dog in the head like that, poor dog must have gone up to the perpetrator in a friendly manor to get a shot like that IMO. It should be looked upon no lighter than if this person had shot a human being.
  15. I Was mostly speachless, (Dumbfounded) I was just too relieved when he picked the puppy Up and left after i didn't have what he wanted for the puppy in the first place. You think of all this stuff afterwards.. like I would have told him in addition to that not being such a smart Idea, I also would have said to watch that his puppy now doesnt bolt up to any big dog assuming that its gonna be okay. All afterthought I guess. BC Crazy, that is terrible for you to have had to see T_T , that was exactly the scenario I saw run through my head for a second - I mean as well as I know my dog whats to say he wouldn't just snap for an unknown reason? And eek as well I wouldn't let two small pups off lead on a beach in the shallows anyway The water rushing out could easily drag a puppy out in a blink of an eye! And there is the tragic proof that people just dont think, or supervise enough around their dogs.
  16. Hmm I dunno maybe I'm over reacting but sheish, I reckon I saw someone do about one of the stupidest things with a pup I think I have ever seen In my dog owning life. I was minding my friends shop yesterday morning, I'd taken Brutus to work with me so I could give him a bath in the morning before we opened (it's a pet shop with a grooming room. - well not a pet shop really she doesnt sell pets, she's a rescue promoter ) cos at the moment my back is too sore to do him the old fashioned way at home. Anyway, shop is of course sensory overload for Brutus who can barely sit still or contain himself (even after an 8klm walk to GET THERE) so of course we are massively excited any time someone comes in, holding up a toy and expecting everyone to play with him... We can usually get him to sit quietly and wait to play... So.. in the afternoon a guy comes in with this tiiiiiiny little beagle/cavvyish looking little puppy holding it in his hands... He walked over to Brutus, and I thought he was gonna let Brutus sniff him while he was holding the pup in his hands, before I could say probably not a good Idea for such a young puppy (plus I also had no idea what Brutus would do with something so tiny..) he promply plopped the puppy on the floor and skidded him right up to Brutus's FEET!! Ahhh!! Like he was a bowl of food or something! EEK! So, I'm like stunned... he didn't check with me first to see if my dog was friendly (yeah okay it would be pretty stupid to bring an unfriendly dog into a public shop, but hey people have done dumber things.. I always assume the worst of people for that reason.) So.. possible scenarios here .. 1. Brutus Doesn't like having small puppy shoved into his space near his toys or stuff, decides to growl or snap at small puppy = Puppy scared for life, angry owner for having "vicous dog" like Dobermann in public, possible vet bills or worse. 2. Brutus the over excitable near 40 kilo behemoth doesnt realise that puppy is small and fragile and proceeds to treat it like any other big dog he plays with, jumps on and or squishes/hurts little puppy = Puppy also affected for life and vet bills et al. Scenario 3 - Thank DOG - as it would happen Brutus stands there and gets down to tiny puppy level and allows himself to be happily crawled over and have his ears licked in and chewed on and pawed over and doest not move at all, moron owner picks up puppy... thankfully no harm done. But Just AHHH!! I know at least 2 other dogs that frequent that shop that belong to customers that if you did a silly thing like that scenario 1 or 2 would have been likely. I mean by all means socialise your puppy but theres a right way and a wrong way to do it and personally to me I thought that was the stupidist thing Id ever seen.
  17. Just been through this with one of my own dogs, or I should say one that stayed with us for a while, She quickly became very neurotic in suburbia, barking at absolutely everything, and nothing. She barked loudly, and alot at all hours of the night and day... I felt terrible about it and was constantly coming up with solution after solution, etc etc to try and stop her barking. It was driving me crazy so of course I knew It was driving the neighbours crazy. We got a fantastic trainer in to help us with her but unfortunatly It was a bit late by then. Fortunatly she didnt get reported to the council (I believe she didn't bark long enough to fall into their guidelines of constant barking) - After she has gone back to her breeder, I found out our neighbours "punished"us for the barking dog by making every kind of silly report possible to our real estate agent. Including things like our dogs are supposedly causing a local rodent plague (how the heck is that even possible? - haven't seen a mouse on our property, i'm sure we would notice a "Plague" of them) Anyways... I hate how people let their dogs bark without trying to stop it! I lived in fear day in day out that some dog hating person would have had enough and throw a bait over the fence or let them out or who knows what. Now I just have the one dog, and I realise just how many OTHER dogs around here bark all the darn time, no wonder the new dog I had was never quiet... I just coudln't hear the instigators over her!
  18. I thought In N.S.W that a regulated sign had to be displayed on the premises stating that a dangerous dog is kept on the property, in addition to the bright danger collar on the dog...that should be enough "Safety"... why the heck would anyone need to know where "Dangerous" dogs live? Would be more like advertising for those running dog fighting rings to know where to potentially try and steal their next victims from without having to drive round looking for the signs. That's like asking the council to print a list of everyone who owns a swimming pool so you know not where to leave your children unsupervised so they don't fall in.
  19. I think Dog-Owner is very understanding of the situation, and is within their right to be upset at the way the dogs where disposed of. I would be horrified if a couple of children had found the dead dogs. But against he chicken owner admired he did the wrong thing in that respect. Sad tragedy all round.
  20. Sad about the old man and his misinterpretation.... Course yesterday I was standing outside a shopping centre with Brutus and a couple of friends when someone walked past and proudly announced "Oh what a beautiful dobermann... CROSS" wahhhh! I said no hes a full Dobermann.. then I love the "Are you sure? hes very BIG." "He's a European Dobermann.. a Working Dog." .... "Ohhhh..." (still didn't believe me I think...) *walked away*
  21. Considering I've only ever had 1 Dog that's actually died of "Old Age" - ie. Not PTS just gone off and died on her own she was a 16 year old Mini Dachie, We had a standard PTS from Cancer at age 13, And we have lost 2 Others to accidents... The natural Longevity of a breed really doesn't bother me that much at all as "Life" will be the determining factor of how long the dog lives for. Id love a giant breed, and life expectancy woudlnt stop me from getting one.
  22. I second this recomendation, She came and saw us up in Noosa For a small travel charge. She is absolutly dedicated and fantastic.
  23. http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2012/03/09/307601_tasmania-news.html One question Id liek to ask is... did the dogs escape as a once off? Where they serial escapists? Mind you by the sounds of the letter at the reaction perhaps this is not the first time. RIP Poor Chickys and Doggies. Very sad it had to happen. And it is surprising that with a law like that, that people would let their dogs roam if they had a high risk of being shot for worrying a person or an animal. Id be interested to see what the dog attack/escape statistics are for that area.
  24. Unfortunately for me every dog that has been loose and rushed out of somewhere at my dogs has had no "happy" intentions. I handle it usually by keeping on walking and not "entertaining" the dog that is loose. As most dogs have no idea what the command "go home" means.. Its just paying the dog attention for its already bad behaviour. I find the ignore, keep your dog close and keep walking is the best approach, if it escalates try to protect yourself and your dog as best you can. I think a pop up umbrella is a good idea, I've thought of carrying a cap gun on occasions.... my dogs are loud noise "proof" (Brutus will sit and stare at fireworks with awe just like we do) so the noise would bother a charging dog way more than him. Since we always taught him for obvious reasons that loud noises are not a negative thing.
  25. I was just looking at the pics, my husband (who is Russian) just accused me that id dump him in a second for Putin because he loves dogs lol.
