Warrnambool (vic) Dolers

I was just out picking Jess up from a party at Brierly Reserve, and couldn't believe the improvements which have happened since we moved from that side of town.

I'm sure some have seen it, but there's a really nice playground for the kids, and I great BBQ area with toilets and shelter etc.

I was thinking it could be a perfect spot for Warrnambool DOLers to get together one day... have some lunch, talk crap, and let the dogs have a nice run together. What do you guys think???

Sounds like a great idea, living so close we go up there all the time. Only thing is where the playground is the dogs have to be on leash within 30 metres of the playground. If it was only us it would be fine.

I'm off to the vets tomorrow see HERE for reason, but just wanted to say JJ when I spoke to the receptionist/vet nurse she was sooooo good, I explained about Cooper and his past and she said they will work with me to make it all good for him. I was so pleased. Remember I said a new vet will be ok till I need something big done with Coop, well this is it. The appointment is tomorrow so I'll report back after that. Did you end up swapping to Lava?

Woo-Hoo! I'm back on!

I went to log-in today and DOL wouldn't accept my password, and when I spoke to Troy about it, he said he couldn't even find my password, so dunno what happened there....

Be that as it may, I'm all set again now!

tlc I did read that thread about CJ.... hope it's "nothing", but be sure to keep us posted.

Yes, I have made the switch to Lava Street.

After the "average" service I have received lately at 'my' clinic, and the terrific service I have been getting for the Reptiles through Lava Street, I have started going there with dogs too.

Tarni went in to have some x-rays last week and I couldn't fault them. :)

Hope they are 'understanding' with CJ tomorrow, as I know you want to stick it out at that clinic. Good Luck! :)

No, I've not seen Sue yet. They come around to the shop when I need them so I haven't even been into the clinic yet!

Well I am happy to report I was very happy with todays vet visit, the vet was lovely and very reassuring about Coops procedure, we decided he will have the lypoma and the thing on his face removed at the same time, so next friday is the day. She said they will sedate him while I am there and call me as soon as he can be picked up and leave him be till I get there. he was such a good boy today I was wrapped. Bronson on the other hand was awful, he was so anxious and really out of sorts, he hasn't been to the vets hardly at all in his 4 years and it shows, she did manage to get him vaccinated and looked in his ears which was the main two things I wanted her to do. I had to put him back in the car before we looked at Cooper and Lacy, he couldn't get out of there fast enough! So for the time being I will be sticking with Wollasten. fingers crossed for a good outcome for Coop next friday the 13th

Glad all went well today. Keep us posted after his next visit.

Why do you think your dogs have such issues with going to the Vet?

They all seem really well-rounded, adjusted dogs for the most part, yet they stress badly with the Vet visits!

Any idea what is causing this?

It's funny, because even with dogs I've had who were a little timid, or at least wary, they never ever had issues with Vet visits..... they knew they would get 'pats' and that seemed to outweigh anything else that might be going to happen to them!

Thanks Jj, I do like to think they are well rounded, well socialised and good K9 citizens, I have worked hard with them to get them that way with a few hitches which I think is to be expected with 4, but for the most part all good so I really am at a loss about the vet visits, can I say I think it is a boy thing ...

My girls are fine at the vet and pretty bomb proof in most situations, apart from Tullys tiny bit of hesitation with other dogs. They have to be pretty bomb proof for the hospital and to pass the vet/Delta assessment. But as for the boys, here is my theory, Cooper had very badly damaged ear drums (actually both perforated) when he was very young, about 6 months old if memory serves me, so lots of vet visits, lots of poking proding etc, lots of medication and an operation, then there was "some" incident at the groomers also in a vet clinic which set him on a path to absolute mayhem with men which we have now over come with lots of work, (Thanks to Cesar and Laura for all their great ideas, they worked) and I would say Cooper is pretty much 100% cured but I don't get complacent as I know there is no guarantees that something won't set him off but i do my best to avoid any sort of situation that may cause him undue stress and anything that may make him revert back to his old habits, it was a trying time but we got there in the end. I must say today was probably the happiest and the best I have ever seen him at the vets ever!

As for the Youngster of the gang, well who knows he is a complicated little fella, he gets anxious in unfamiliar surroundings but once we have been a few times he is fine. He has been so healthy so basically no visits to the vets apart from yearly vaccinations, but when he was young he chewed a panadol packet that I wasn't sure had anything in it so off to the vets for a vomit, he may have chalked that up to a bad experience and remembered it but at the time he was happy as Larry and after the chuck running around like a mad thing and even the vet commented and said dogs were usually lethargic after they have the stuff to make them vomit, not Bronson he did not miss a beat, he has a cast iron constitution!! The only other time he has ever been was for a sore on his head and he was so bad that time the vet had to treat him outside, she even bought the clippers outside to shave the patch on his head, he was fine outside. So possibly the smell for him is enough to make him anxious? He would not even take a treat today, off me or the vet, there was just no winning him over at all, but he did stay still enough to do what she had to do.

Perhaps they feed off me a bit, I do my best to be calm and confident when we go in there but I generally dislike having to deal with vets in general. Maybe they can feel that?? ANy other theories?

No real theories from me, although everything you've mentioned sounds plausible.

Dogs are funny creatures.... piss them off just once as youngsters and they'll never forget it!

Hopefully in time, BJ will become more tolerant too, and you'll have nothing to worry about at the Vets, besides the invoice as you leave.....

Hopefully, he will stay healthy and only have to go once a year, then I wont have to worry about it.

The vet said today she thinks Lacy needs a dental @$300 I said it will have to wait till Coops all good. She didn't look in Bronsosn mouth probly just as well.

I thought Coops procedure would have been around $500 but she quoted me $350 or maybe a bit less, does that seem ok? Not sure what she charged me for today, its about $70 now just for vaccs.

I took the dogs for a quick run to brierly this morning before the vets and took particular notice of the sign near the play ground, dogs can be near the play ground but if they are within 30m they have to be on a lead. The rest of the area apart from the ovals is all offlead.

It's hard to say if that's a good price.... really depends on what anesthetic they use there. Sounds pretty good to me though. $300 dental???? That sounds a little steep, but then it's been a while since I worked in clinics....

Yea that's what I thought, but at this point in time that can wait, As much as I thought the vet was great, I thought she was quick to say about Lacys teeth, the last time I seen Craig he said keep an eye on them, and he seen them quite regularly with the delta testing. She does have one of her back ones broken but there has been no trouble with it so far.

Did you get home from the beach before the bad weather hit? We are just home, got a run in and went to the MILs, Doing a bit of officy type stuff with lacy glued to y foot. All of mine are reasonably good with thunder but Lacy likes to stay very close. I just ignore and they don't seem to worry to much! Dam weather!!

Jj do you get the feeling it is just you and me in here these days.

We went to Killarney but we were only there less than an hour.... the tide was well up, lots of sea-weed about, very rough, and the wind was blowing sand in the kids eyes. They still had a blast, swimming and letting off some steam. Came home and the wind had died a little, so spent the afternoon beside the pool sipping Pear Cider..... doesn't get much better!

Some wild winds later-on though!!

Tarni's the only girl I have here these days (although we will have another by the end of the year  ) and she's completely bomb-proof. I shoot over all my dogs regularly when they are pups so I know they are 'rocks' for the field, so I've never had a Vizsla scared of anything like thunder. If anything, she just gets a bit pissed that it's woken her from her naps!

It DOES feel like it's just you and me in here lately..... where the hell IS everyone? I guess everyone's just busy.

Speaking of busy.... I am totally out-growing my current shop and am looking (or in Chan's words... "JUST looking!") at our options.

Have been thinking this week about going into the old Clive Peter's Space out East. I'm told they've divided into 3 smaller stores, but I'd imagine they'd still be bigger than what I've got now. I've got SOOOoooooo much new stuff coming in this week and I have no-where to put it. I don't want to become one of those dingy little over-crowded, dirty, can't-find-anything type pet stores. Hate them! We'll have a look and go from there I guess...
