Question For Breeders About Pet Stores.

Is there any circumstance where you would sell your puppies to be sold on in a pet store?

Talking to mum and she thinks that there are ethical breeders who sell their puppies to pet stores to be sold, if the circumstance called for it. I'm guessing some sort of tragedy where they cannot look after the puppies.

I told her that I didn't think there was any way in hell a breeder that I would consider responsible would sell their puppy to a pet store. There is always a better option than sticking your puppies into a little box during those key socialisation periods. Where they toilet in their food area, get taken to god know what environment nightly and sold to someone who potentially has no idea what they're doing.

Feel free to list reason who you wouldn't or why you would do it.

In the event of a tragedy where I couldn't look after the pups, there are several people who would take the litter on for me I believe, just as I would do for them should it come to it.

We are just about to breed our first litter and our bitch's breeder would take the litter on should something terrible happen to Mum and I, should she not be able to I'm sure numerous doggy friends would also help out if needed. While some of them might not be ideal, they would be a hell of a lot better than a pet shop!!!

NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMATANCES and after nearly 30 years in the dog world, none of my many breeder friends would sell to a pet shop either. When you decide to breed a litter it is done with the knowledge that you will have the puppies with you until you find the right homes for them. Hopefully this is by the time they are 8 weeks but sometimes it takes longer. Also the need to know that they are in the right home is a must and not something any reputable breeder would trust to a pet shop. Only the breeder can answer all the questions a sensible buyer should be asking.

Selling to a pet shop also means drastically cutting corners with how the puppies are raised. The shop will only pay 50% of the price they charge and raising puppies for that small amount of money is often not possible unless you just feed the cheapest food and reduce costs like worming, health testing, etc.

Finally it is absolute cruelty to confine active puppies at a critical time of development to those little glass cages. How anyone manages to a toilet train a puppy that is traumatised by being kept in it's own mess is a mystery to me. My babies leave at 8 weeks almost toilet trained because they have been given the opportunity to toilet well away from their sleeping area from about 4 weeks and they practially train themselves.

No ethical breeder would ever put their dogs in a pet shop. How could a responsible breeder justify not knowing where their puppies were going? Not to mention knowing that they are most likely going to be bought on impulse by people who might have no idea about the breed and who will most likely never have any contact with the breeder. I would think that responsible breeders would have a plan in place for what they would do in an emergency. Most dog people have lots of contacts and would no doubt be able to find someone to care for a litter if they couldn't.

Pet shops leave the animals in the shops! They dont get leave the shop until they are sold.

Isnt it against ANKC regs to sell to a pet shop? I know it used to be 15 yrs ago.

Quite a few pet shops (around my area in Sydney anyway) ask for "puppysitting".

So any random person can come along and take the puppy home for a night.

Is that something designed to get you to fall in love with the puppy and buy it the next day???

Who could give a puppy back after a day?

I reckon they would make quite a few sales that way  I would never, ever, ever sell pups to a pet shop.

I can't think of any circumstance where it would be ethical to hand over any puppy to a pet shop.

We have plans in place ( amongst a group of friends/breeders ) where any adults and pups would be taken care of or appropriately rehomed if necessary, in the event of accident of illness. If my house blew up tomorrow, the same would occur.

There are no excuses , as far as I;m concerned. No matter how desperate you might get, there are always alternatives to a pet shop.

What happens to puppies that don't get sold?

I've never seen a puppy over 4 months old in a pet shop and they can't possibly sell all the puppies in under 2 months (if they get them when they are 8 weeks) especially the shops that have like 20 puppies for sale at one time.

do they go to rainbow bridge  ?

It wouldn't surprise me if some ended up being sold/passed on to puppy farms, I have no evidence to support this belief.

No way would I ever sell a puppy through a pet shop - I'm not even allowed to go in to shops where mammals are sold (OH banned me)

Unsold pups are usually PTS

If you'd put time, effort and care into raising a litter, why on earth would you sell them to a store that will put a 300% mark up on them and allow the first person with enough balance on their credit card to walk out with one? :o Vetting homes and providing after sale support is part and parcel of what responsible breeders do. Frankly if every member here had bought their pup from such a breeder, the posts asking for advice in the Puppy Problems forum would drop dramatically.

Sorry, but I'd strike any breeder who sold litters to pet shops off my list of recommendations. Breeders who care for their dogs give a damn about where their pups end up.

Yes in some states (NSW poss?) Registered Breeders can sell to pet shops and they do. I have had registered breeders in SA approach me to buy puppies but it had to be hush, hush I do not sell puppies and I should have taken details and reported them to SACA but couldn't be bothered. I have also seen registered breeders dump puppies at the AWL to offload if they have had excess or have health issues and don't want to pts themselves and if they are rehomed they don't know who to. As well as oops cross breed litters, CCR X Alaskan Malamute litter comes to mind I get oops litters happen but to me an ethical breeder would desex and rehome the pups themselves not let them go to a shelter to be rehomed to just anyone off the street.

As we all know just because you are a Registered Breeder it doesn't make you an ethical breeder and that it is where there is a distinguishment I believe. To me ethical breeders care about what happens to their pups from conception to the end, they offer back up support to their puppy buyer and they have a genuine desire to better and protect their chosen breed/breeds.

The original question was whether an ethical breeder would do it - no one even mentioned registered breeders. :o

Its a mystery here.

Mum bought a pet shop dog, almost 4 years ago, before I became a member on here and learnt better of pet shops... He has always used the straw in the garden as his pooing spot. :o Taught the Pointers also - makes it much easier to clean, and safer to walk on the grass.

Some registered breeders are far from ethical, while others do everything and more which is great.

Sorry, another post.

There was a pet shop I used to go to when I was tiny, was located next to my auntys' shop. 2 years ago it closed down. I later found out that the puppies that weren't sold, were killed and frozen, and later fed to the newer puppies... :o

Mad me feel absolutely sick.

My God, that is just hideous; how can any decent individual do something so atrocious?! I suppose it goes without saying that anyone owning a pet shop where live animals are sold are not exactly the most caring of individuals.
