I recently asked what I can do for this issue of my dog jumping over the 6ft wooden fence in our rental property, I dont want to have to put her down if she attacks a stranger if someone new moves into the house she is getting into.

I got told to use an electric fence and also some people told me they dont work,

if they do can anyone tell me where i can buy one from at a cheap price??

or any budget ideas that wont break the bank

she has gotten so bad that we cannot take her off the lead unless we are outside with her we are just lucky no one lives behind us atm.

thankyou

Better get a very secure dog run. Not fair to risk anyone or anything being attacked.

I'm afraid that seems to be a constant issue with certain breeds, if anyone takes one on they need to be very well prepared to quickly deal with any issues. Staffies are known for their escaping and climbing abilities and they are often unfriendly with other dogs.

You can be sued/fined bigtime - I would sue any owner whose dog attacked mine or me.

You know you have an issue, you need to deal with it ASAP.

It would be a rare Staffy that is not really people friendly, so if your dog is people aggressive you have a big problem that will need a behaviourist and Vet assessment.

There might be problems with dog aggression, especially if the Staffy regards the neighbouring property as part of it's territory. There is also the problem of a person getting injured trying to prevent their dog being attacked by yours.

Many Terrier breeds prove to be houdini escape artists, determination and persistence is built into the breed, along with intelligence and curiousity and a desire to chase smaller animals.

An enclosed dog run, some obedience training classes (local councils usually offer cheap ones) and socialisation under advisement from an experienced dog trainer, perhaps the one from obedience classes.

No-one can really get away with not training a terrier breed of dog, also if escaping is a problem please ensure the dog is desexed.

Lots of ideas were put up in your last thread have you tried any of those yet?

A staffy will not just suddenly stop jumping fences, as I said in your previous thread my staffy is 8 and still jumps the fence if given the opportunity - therefore I have to remove her opportunities to do it. She is penned while I am not home, in a pen made cheaply from materlial from the scrap metal recyclers.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SOLAR-ELECTRIC-FENC...=item4cf6da4f12

just one of many electric fence energisers on ebay.

If it was me, id opt for a dog run. safer, more secure and less risk of any issues should your dog manage to get through an electric fence (which is a strong possibility.)

Its your responsibility to do something that works with your dog. It may be that you need to try a few different methods.

What HAVE you tried that has failed? i know you were given a fair few options in your previous post. what method is your dog still getting through? have you watched HOW your dog gets out? is it climbing or jumping? that will effect the effectiveness of electric fencing systems.

Yup a dog run is your safest bet. You can get a portable one to take with you if you move house.

If she is likely to attack a human I'd also get a behaviourist in, next time you can afford it, that's not normal behaviour for a stafford.

Although, perhaps you just mean "attack" as in rush up to or jump on (which many councils will rather stupidly call an "attack").

In NSW its illegal to use an electric fence around dogs.

A dog run or a yoke.

You can buy battery operated electric fence units quite cheaply - they're best run off a car battery though they do also work off D sized batteries. Go to a farm supply place.

If you believe your "staffy'' will attack a person for real - not just jump on as someone else has suggested - then you have a much bigger problem than fence jumping.

Use it discretely if it is illegal to use in your state, dumb law - would they rather the dog got out and was killed by a car?

I just went back & checked...

found the description of your dog

our 12month old american staffy
and would suggest that if she does get out and get picked up for roaming/attacking /harassing - you may have trouble with her breed I D .

You also did get lots of advice in your first thread- but have not said if you tried any of it ? (or did I miss that bit:o)

They were good ideas, but I need budget Ideas so I thought I would ask again, Im not sure what a yoke is either, its so bazzar that she is doing this, shes a friendly dog with lots and lots of toys and food and a warm kennel. is it just that she wants to find out where the other dog has gone to?

Im not sure what a yoke is either,

there was an explanation/photo in your first thread

Trouble with fence jumping is ..that once it has happened, you can bet that whatever they find is MUCH more exciting than the same boring stuff they smell/ see every day at home ..that they do it again...and again...

I can understand the need for budget ideas, but remember that if she gets caught by animal control after jumping the fence, getting her out of the pound could be very expensive too.

Once they've learned to jump the fence, they'll do it any time they're in the least bit bored, simply because they've learned it's an option.
