Archie's mum Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Every since I had my pup he has had diarrhea. He is now 4 mths. Last week I gave him a chicken neck and he had blood in the stool. Took him to the vet and she gave him eucanuba to settle his tummy. Today is Tuesday and it's worst. I'm thinking he's allergic or can't tolerate chicken since everything he's ever been fed with had chicken. I started with Optimum puppy food and my dog puppy tinned food, then raw chicken mince and rice then the Eukanuba ....help please Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
persephone Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 You would be wise to get a fresh sample of poo ..and get back to the vet (or use a new vet) .If you got your pup from a breeder.. please contact them and ask their advice . It could be a food intolerance, it could be IBS, it could be a number of things ..and tests will need to be done to find out what . Perhaps in the next day or so before the next vet app't just feed him steamed pumpkin and a small amount of lean rabbit/beef/lamb/turkey .No treats, no bones ...no chicken. He looked happy and active so I didnt think it was serious. I have only ever given him sweet potato ears. I'm getting this holistic stuff tomorrow that is free of the main things dogs are intolerant to. If he's not better by sat I'll go the next step which to get him allergy tested. Simply Grand Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 I know of someone whose 8 month old boxer has colitis. Symptoms are constant diarrhea and blood in the stool. Apart from that he seems healthy and happy. It has been going on for a month or so and the vet has told them that it should be controllable with diet but they're not sure exactly what the diet should be so they are going to a holistic vet. If it has 3 ingredients only in it how do you know which one, if any, he is allergic to ? Give him just boiled rice & some steamed chicken breast pieces, no fat. This will not upset his stomach & will allow it to settle down. Only water to drink. Feed this & nothing else for 3 days & see if it stops. No treats, check he isn't eating anything in the garden too. Is your puppy wormed ? If it hasn't stopped after 3 days take a stool sample & go to another vet. It could be anything at all from something wrong internally, to parasite, allergy or just too many diet changes. Allergy is an individual thing not a common one thing trigger. Changing a young puppies food can be the cause an upset stomach. If you change foods you should transition the change, mixing the 2 food together for a period of time. If any of my puppies/dogs get an upset tummy I put then on a bland diet for a few days (boied rice, lean chicken and natutal yogart) and if does not get better after a few days - to the vet. Another thing you can try is a probiotic - like inner health plus - these work just as well with dogs as the do with people. Also as Christina said, check if there is anything your pup could be eating in the yard and ensure your puppies worming is up to date. If you have done all this and it is still a problem in a few days - go to the vet. Personally I would be going to a different vet. I hope your puppy gets better soon. Boil rice & boil chicken breast as soon as the breast start to boil remove make sure the chicken is cooked leave in boil water until cooked it only takes about 5mins to cook chicken put on chopping board cool a bit then get a fork & run fork along chicken makin little shreaded pieces add some chicken with the rice make sure u put left overs in fridge cook fresh daily. I also had to give Science Diet dry food for senitive stomachs this stopped my boxer Diarrhea she had IBS. You need a good vet that specialises in the stomach & Bowel. dancinbcs Posted February 1, 2012 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Where did the puppy come from and what has he been wormed with? If he hasn't been wormed with Drontal use that now. Puppy worming solutions are pretty useless and the wormers in monthly heartworm tablets sometimes do not work on all worms. This puppy could have hookworm and it can be difficlt to diagnose and treat. It also gets in the soil and can be picked up by humans or dogs through the soles of the feet. Cavamum Posted February 1, 2012 Share Posted February 1, 2012 My pup gets this from the slightest little change in diet. She has a sensitive stomach. I feed her Royal Canin Hypoallergenic for her skin (instead of puppy because she gets a skin allergy) and she is doing great on it. It is very frightening when your pup has blood in its stool. My vet gave me antibiotics both times Bella has had this and protexin. If any food is dropped on the floor I fight with Bella to get it out of her mouth. I would change vets and get proper treatment. Archie's mum Posted February 4, 2012 Author Share Posted February 4, 2012 Ill try to answer some of your questions. Vet hasn't asked for stool sample. He got wormed 2 days ago with Drontal. The breeder used food that I don't have here in Sydney. I was going to go back to the vet but since he's had this from when I got him at 10 weeks I thought a couple more days won't hurt so I went with my gut feeling that it's chicken. I went online and ordered " Holistic select" lamb and brown rice from a place called Pet Deli. It was almost like a miracle he did his first solid poo. Now 2 days later he has some solid and some runny. I give him absolutely no treats or extras. Do I persist with this and see? He's very active and happy with agood appetite. I would not assault his system with chemicals such as wormers till you check if he needs them. If youwant to add something now I would be adding probiotics.
