rubiton Posted May 19, 2012 Share Posted May 19, 2012 As SirWJ said you dont have to pay the fee as the walks are in public areas and they no longer have special parking you have to park in Adelaider at least anywhere you can find a spot (and with the Adel Oval being redone that little car park will not be there either). Thats why they push so hard for people to pay on the day (it was much more obvious at the last one I went to). But yes the year the dog was throwing up all the way around and then the mention that the RSPCA had parvo go through soon after put me off going back for these walks. And after the emails they sent me (I must be on a mailing list) Id rather not have to dodge a 'campaign' booth halfway round for their current 'campaigns' like they did one year when they were campaigning inn regard to pig farms. Guest donatella Posted May 20, 2012 Share Posted May 20, 2012 How did we all go? I went to the Cleveland one in Brisbane and it was a good morning (I guess). A bit cramped and I was thankful that all (well most) dogs were friendly. There was one Lab that kept lunging and barking at dogs and the owners had it on a retractable leash which was worrying, not sure if they brought it out to socialise it but it didn't look friendly nor did it look happy to be there But that was the only aggressive act I saw on the day (for some reason with hundreds of dogs I honestly thought i'd see more) There was also the dog who went for a swim in beach and just kept swimming out to sea and the owner and some buff young guy jumped in and swam out to catch it. We had a nice walk in Sale, a few ferrel dogs but mostly under control, there was a lot of people for the size of the town. I was horrified at the state of some of the dogs, a cattle dog so fat it could hardly walk and it's eyes looked like they were going to pop out, that was the saddest one. A Marremma (sp) looked like it needed a good bath it's coat looked like it was matted, my sister commented the dog looked like its owner he had dreadlocks. There was lots of lovely dogs, a huge Newf, and a huge mastif made my nephews day as he hasn't seen too many big dogs before. The weather was lovely and all in all it was a great morning! I had a disaster with my photos, didnt realize my cameras iso was on 1600 and it was a bright sunny day, you can just imagine how the photos turned out! She is such a little star, the paper took her picture and everyone wanted to pat her but she made the shorter walk and we had a good morning. All the dogs were well controlled and all looked really good, with dog savvy owners. Saw a few outstanding Danes and a lovely old Sheltie, all in great condition. I should have been doing the same then I would have realized but I just stuck it on P, and didnt even thinkto check the iso, between the four dogs and taking photos, it's a wonder I got any :laugh: I guess it could have been worse, at least we still have memories of the day and hoping I can fix a few up in LR, I'm away at the moment so will have a go when I get home. Plus the lady from a dog training school/breeder with her lovely South African Boerbulls. Such beautiful sooky dogs!! Edited to say: Kirah, Zeus and I spent the day with a friend and her most lovely and cuddly Akita!! Apparently they aren't supposed to be cuddly and sooky, but she's beautiful! I saw a Borzoi, a Frenchie ( or possibly a Boston, it was across the oval.) a bloodhound, a couple of Danes (one who was very skinny) , a Maremma who definitely needed a good brush ( and possibly a clip ) a clipped Afghan, and my favorite! Three Bernese Mountain Dogs, two of which were puppies I didn't see any out and out aggression, but do see quite a few 'owner fails' like one man who's dog was off leash for almost the whole thing (and running amok) and a lady from the dog park (who I unfortunately happen to know) who allowed her young male cattle dog off 'for a swim' because the walk went through an off leash area, so that makes it ok didn't seem to matter that he then run around annoying walkers and mounting dogs Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Little Gifts Posted May 21, 2012 Share Posted May 21, 2012 I went to the Gold Coast one thinking I could take some lovely pics of my foster boy on the sand but he hated every single second of it and we didn't even walk - we were just wandering around the stalls and going to watch some entertainment! He's a shar pei and I've never seen him droop his whole wrinkly body low like that before. I doubt anyone had a clue what breed he was - he looked more like a science experiment gone wrong! Remarkabull Posted May 21, 2012 Share Posted May 21, 2012 I went to the Darwin one and we had a nice time. Simi met lot's of new friends and we even met her uncle. There were a few 'fails' though. At one point I had to hold back my OH after a guy watched his dog poo, right where everyone was walking and the proceeded to walk off and leave it there! I would have offered him a bag but we were a fair distance from him and I thought the people standing right near him might have offered him one but they didn't . There were also a few dogs who looked like they could use a bath and clip, but most of them looked in good condition. OH witnessed it mauling another smaller dog It had it in its mouth & was shaking it & wouldn't let go. There were 4 people trying to get it off it - kicking it, pulling its legs & trying to prise open its mouth. This was all in front of its owners who had small children who were all understandably hysterical as with anyone else who saw it. I'm just so glad that me & my son didn't see it. sailormouth Posted May 21, 2012 Share Posted May 21, 2012 We went to the Ulverstone (tas) walk and had a great time. All the dogs I saw were really well behaved. We saw some gorgeous Danes, german shepherds, a beautiful pack of dalmatians and lots of adorable pugs. They had some great little stalls offering dental checks and grooming. Quite a few dogs had little bows in their hair from that stall, including a beautiful Irish wolfhound. We took our rescue girl Edna, a chihuahua cross. She got a little bit overwhelmed in the crowd waiting for the walk to start. Too many bigger dogs I think, so she wanted to get picked up. She was right with the smaller dogs. Once we were off walking and had a bit of room around us she was happy as Larry and pranced along. She even did the 5.2km walk! Gave her a bath when we got home and she then she went straight to sleep. It was great to see the shelter we adopted Edna from out with their current dogs up for adoption, all wearing "adopt me!" jackets. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
