skully Posted June 11, 2012 Share Posted June 11, 2012 Sorry if this has been dicussed before.. It's been SO wet in sydney this week - we have had a few accidents inside. Normally pebbles (11 1/2 month old staffy) tells us when she wants to go outside for toilet. We let her out, she goes, its all fine. but she HATES the rain... She wont jump out of the car when it's raining and hates walking out to the loo in the rain. I've been trying to go out with her on her lead and making her go (she responds very well to her "get busy" pee command - eventually!) and taking her for walks in the rain to get her more used to it... but last night it was POURING and she just wouldn't go out. i busted her a little while after she wined to go out (and wouldn't) having done a poo inside and wee inside this morning. I get she doesn't want to go outside ( i wouldn't!) but is there an indoor solution? I am thinking of one of those doggy indoor loo's... is it worth is - or should i just persist with making her go outside? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Danois Posted June 11, 2012 Share Posted June 11, 2012 Persist in making her go outside. Having an indoor toilet will confuse her as she will not know that it's there for when it is bad weather. I bought one of those really absorbent towels from enjo (you can get cheaper ones) and we make a big game of drying him off when he runs back in... He thinks getting dried off and all roughed up, putting the towel over his head is heaps of fun, so this works for him. koalathebear Posted June 11, 2012 Share Posted June 11, 2012 My two hated going in the rain, too. Never had accidents but they really did not like going - as Danois has mentioned, we just persisted. We'd stand out for ages in the rain (umbrella for us :laugh: ) until the dogs went. These days, Elbie will do #1s and #2 very obediently in the morning and before bed. Hoover will reliably do #1 but will usually refuse to poop in the rain - sometimes he will though. We just persisted until they realised that they weren't going to go inside until they did SOMETHING! :laugh: Good luck with it - you'll probably get quite cold and wet but in the end hopefully persistence will pay off. If the weather is extra-ordinarily foul and the rain is more than just ordinarily heavy, I put my boy's coat on. He still tip-toe hops over the wet lawn (to the straw garden mulch where it is drier on his feet :rolleyes: but this makes the world of difference for those really bad bad weather times. persephone Posted June 11, 2012 Share Posted June 11, 2012 I suggest going for walks in the rain..playing fetch- whatever she likes doing :) . Teach her that rainy times can be fun, too. Our dogs don't care a hoot about rain ..and enjoy getting out & about - I think because they've never been allowed to use it as an excuse . I put on a coat /take a brolly ..and off we go. But pop outside for a toilet stop after being in the warmth? Mmmmmnup. Although he will do it if pushed (i.e. he won't toilet inside) he'll hold on if he is allowed the opportunity ..... until he just can't hold on anymore. I put newspaper on the floor in the laundry for him to toilet on. I know, he was spoiled rotten & now I am going to cop it from other posters. Get a good weatherproof coat like a Weatherbeeta Landa and make them go outside. A good shove from behind will sent them out and do not let them back in until they have toiletted, no matter how wet they get. That's not always correct. My OH and I love walking in the rain. When my Elkhound was a puppy we would take him out on walks while it was raining, took him to the dog park and played with him, but he never got around to liking the rain. He absolutely hates it. He does go out to toilet in the rain. Doesn't have any accidents. But he holds on as long as he can. He hates swimming as well. Made by a company in Townsville for drying clothes in fierce tropical sun. I keep most of it folded back but fold it right out in really wet weather. Then it provides a drier area underneath for the tibs to go to the toilet. I also have a green plastic tarp, with a piece of good quality artificial grass on top that I can lay out on the weather-proof verandah. If the weather is especially rotten we do sometimes leave her inside, so this might be a good idea for us? could you teach her both at the same time? or would that totally confuse her? He only used it when it was raining, or he couldn't hold on until I got home. I know a lot of posters will disagree with me, but meh, as long as you & your dog are happy, that's all that matters. I guess its up to you whether having your dog toilet inside in a designated area is acceptable. Personally I would find that unacceptable but I know there are people who wouldn't find this so bad. She may develop a preference for going inside. Perhaps one of those doggy toilets that are designed for apartments would be better/easier to teach her as it is more natural (I believe they have some kind of fake grass). I think most dogs have a preference for grass-like materials. BTW just out of curiosity is this a staffy thing? I've noticed a number of Staffy's at work hate going out in the rain and will refuse to move or keep turning back when its raining :laugh: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She's good with letting us know when she wants to go outside (even when it's raining). Normally she whines by the back door, we open it and leave it open till she comes back in. With this rain though she refuses to even go outside, but keeps whining by the back door! It's winter, so i dont want to just leave it open. I dont want to just shut the door on her outside either cause i figure she'll just whine to be let back in, not let me know when she's been to the loo and ready to come back in (if that makes sense). It's strange with SBT - they're such a tough little dog, but she's being so precious it's quite funny (if it wasn't ruining my carpet). big sook that she is! I think if she's toilet trained (most of the time) anyway by now, her natural preference will be grass and hopefully she'll only go inside when she has to (in her mind lol) ie when its raining?
