I might be wrong but I suspect your friend's concern about costs is why this dog is not being properly diagnosed or treated. I suspect she has been relying on the internet for advice instead of a vet. Were X-rays really taken? Were 'syringes' really taken? Leema Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 A DOLers dog had tetanus a while back and had a very stiff jaw and his eyes were very wide. The vets were stumped as it is very rare. Some DOLers suggested tetanus and they were right . I initially thought tetanus, too, but masticatory muscle myositis seems probably from the quick read I have about it. As I have had said early I'm just posting the information that I get from her and then pass on information to her trying to get her some help. Please ensure you tell her that Benadryl will do nothing unless the dog is coughing. Also, if the dog isn't in pain, she is taking a risk of a bleed by giving it aspirin, and for nothing. judy69 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Share Posted January 22, 2014 She got the dog from the RSPCA in Sept last year. I'm trying to find out if it's still being given the benadryl and aspirin. melzawelza Posted January 22, 2014 Share Posted January 22, 2014 This is probably masticatory myositis. The dog will need to be diagnosed by a vet who has treated this before. The treatment is usually prednisolone. Someone I know had a dog with this and he looked identical to this dog with the same symptoms (only he looked even worse). It's a very distinct 'look' and I would be very surprised given the other symptoms too if it wasn't this. I'm sorry to say that he had to be euthanased, but his case was very severe, and from my readings most dogs recover. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You have certainly done all that you could to help your friend and her dog ! Well done. Assuming that it is MM, as long as the dog is on the correct dose and is continued for quite a few months it should recover.Of course that is providing this is its first bout and the treatment has been started early.
